Su Wenhao’s situation was both significant and trivial.
Looked at one way, it concerned the rest of his life. Looked at another, it was simply his private affair. Others couldn’t interfere, nor could they offer advice.
The interns were also instructed, regardless of whether they knew about the matter, not to express personal opinions. They were told to keep a closer eye on Su Wenhao during work, ensuring he didn’t make mistakes that could jeopardize his promising future.
Despite the hectic day, Liu Banxia didn’t slack off. She still completed a round of training in the dream space before finally coming out to rest.
"President Liu, you’re needed for incoming patients. An ambulance is on its way with several individuals injured in a brawl, so with severe knife wounds."
Still groggy from sleep, Liu Banxia was shaken awake by Wang Chao.
Liu Banxia jolted upright, shook her head to clear it, grabbed her white coat, and rushed out.
She had just stepped outside, not even having fully put on her coat, when the ambulance arrived at the ergency center.
"Abdominal penetrating wound. The knife is still embedded in his abdon. Vital signs are stable," the paradic reported.
"Are there any more critically injured patients?" Liu Banxia asked.
"There’s one in the next ambulance who was hit in the head with a club," the paradic replied.
"Wang Chao, you take this one. Ergency Room 1. Xu Yino, you assist. Call a neurosurgeon over," Liu Banxia directed.
"Three lacerations on the back, still oozing blood. Vital signs stable," said the paradic from the next ambulance as they entered.
"Examination bed. Qing Kewa, you take this patient," Liu Banxia instructed, pointing.
"Blood pressure 80/100, heart rate 110. Intubated in the ambulance after vomiting blood. Multiple blunt force trauma injuries," announced the paradic from the third ambulance.
Liu Banxia frowned. "Ergency Room 2. Dr. Wei will take this case, Liu Yiqing to assist."
"Laceration to the head, suspected skull fracture. Blood pressure 70/90, heart rate 120. Received blood transfusion, IV fluids, and oxygen in the ambulance," the paradic from the fourth ambulance reported, rushing in with the patient.
"Doctor Xiao, I’ll have to trouble you with this one," Liu Banxia said, looking at Xiao Jun from Neurosurgery.
Xiao Jun nodded and imdiately took charge of the patient.
Seeing yet another patient being wheeled in, Liu Banxia started to feel overwheld.
"A kebab skewer has pierced his cheek and tongue. We couldn’t treat it at the scene," the paradic stated.
Liu Banxia glanced over; two pieces of gristle were protruding from the man’s cheek.
"Examination bed. Miao Rui, you’re up," Liu Banxia said.
"Knife wound to the right wrist, severed an artery and tendons. We applied a tourniquet in the ambulance to control the bleeding," reported the newly arrived paradic.
"Liang Xiaolin, take this patient," Liu Banxia called out. "Officer, how many more patients are there?"
"There are five more. Four have minor injuries. One man has facial burns from hot soup from a clay pot; he’s further back," replied the police officer who had accompanied them.
Liu Banxia let out a sigh of relief. "Thankfully, not too many critical ergencies then. I’ll handle the debrident for the burn victim. Sister Li, please notify the sterile ward upstairs to prepare."
With that, she headed to Ergency Room 1.
"The X-ray shows injuries to the stomach and spleen. The ultrasound indicates intra-abdominal bleeding and stomach contents. He needs surgery imdiately," Wang Chao reported.
"Huang Bo, you’ll assist Doctor Wang in surgery," Liu Banxia said.
"My patient has a pneumohemothorax and has been intubated. He has multiple soft tissue contusions, as well as fractured ribs and fractures in both arms. The abdominal ultrasound hasn’t revealed any issues so far. I’ve called in the cardiothoracic and orthopedic doctors. He’s being sent for a head CT now."
Before Liu Banxia could leave, Wei Yuan walked in.
Liu Banxia nodded. "If there are no internal abdominal injuries, could you take a look at a patient with a sutured wrist artery and tendon? Liang Xiaolin is attending to him. I have a facial burn patient coming in shortly."
Wei Yuan nodded. A facial burn was indeed far more critical than a tendon suture.
If a tendon suture was perford promptly, the impact on the patient’s life would likely be minimal. However, if a facial burn wasn’t debrided properly, it could easily lead to permanent disfigurent.
"Doctor Xiao, what’s the situation?"
Liu Banxia slipped into Ergency Room 3.
"Suspected subdural hematoma. I’ll have to take him directly to surgery as well. There’s a small amount of fluid in the abdominal cavity. Who should I assign to that?" Xiao Jun asked.
"Li Hao, you assist Doctor Xiao in surgery. If the situation is critical, you perform the laparotomy imdiately. If it’s not urgent, wait a little," Liu Banxia instructed.
"Yes, Teacher Liu!" Li Hao responded in a clear voice.
"Teacher Liu, is there anything I can do?" Su Wenhao ran in from outside just then.
"Stay with . We’ll wait to receive the next wave of patients; they’re all minor injuries," Liu Banxia said.
Su Wenhao nodded.
The words had barely left his mouth when the sound of police sirens and ambulance alarms blared from outside again.
"Burns to the left cheek and eyelid," a paradic said, helping a young man walk in.
"President Liu, Dr. Wei has taken over my patient," Liang Xiaolin reported, finding her.
"Go to the CT room. There’s a patient there with a chest tube. If he needs to go to the OR, you go with him," Liu Banxia said.
"Su Wenhao, take this patient to the ergency operating room for a basic examination and debrident preparation. I’ll be there shortly to perform the debrident."
Both of them nodded.
To Liu Banxia’s surprise, sothing else unexpected occurred. This ti, it wasn’t just four or five injured individuals who walked in, but also seven or eight angry-looking young n.
"What do you think you’re doing? All of you, stop right there!" a police officer nearby quickly shouted.
"We’re here to see a doctor," the leader of the group retorted, his eyes darting around.
"I’m a doctor here. If you need dical attention, please wait over to the side," Liu Banxia said, stepping forward. She caught the strong scent of alcohol on the man.
"I know you must be one of the groups involved, looking to settle scores here in the hospital. Calm down and think about it. There are security caras and police officers here. Why cause more trouble?"
"You all need to be smart about this," the police officer added, moving to stand beside Liu Banxia. "This is a serious incident, and we don’t even know yet if there will be fatalities. Don’t get yourselves dragged into it."
Hearing their words, the group cald down sowhat. However, they had all been drinking, and their emotions weren’t easily soothed.
"Who else is injured? Quickly, go wait over there for debrident. The New Year is almost here; you don’t want to celebrate with a face like that, making your whole family miserable," Liu Banxia said.
"If you’re not seriously hurt and are just here to support your friends, please go sit down over there and try to calm down. Zhou Qian, get these guys so water, and prepare a few buckets for those who’ve had too much to drink."
"Doctor, I think my arm is dislocated," a young man squeezed through from the back, his left hand supporting his right arm. He had a black eye.
"Let see. It’s probably not dislocated; perhaps it’s because you don’t exercise much," Liu Banxia said with a laugh as she took the young man’s arm.
"Doctor, it is! It’s really dislocated! I can’t use any... UGH!" The young man had only gotten halfway through his sentence when Liu Banxia deftly popped his dislocated shoulder back into place.
"Go and register properly. None of your injuries are serious. That man with the facial burns, he’s one of your acquaintances, right?" Liu Banxia asked.
The leader nodded. "We were just having a peaceful al when they started fighting and knocked the pot over in our direction. He’s not even married yet! What’s he going to do if his face is disfigured?"
Liu Banxia nodded. "I understand the situation. I will personally debride his wound. Do a favor: help maintain order here."
"I took a quick look. Even though there are four or five blisters on his face, it probably won’t lead to disfigurent. However, it will be painful for a short while. I’ll also have our plastic surgeon consult tomorrow."
"Don’t worry. Just for the fact that you’re standing up for your friend, I have to do my utmost to save his face. Anyone who’s injured or feeling unwell, go register quickly, and we’ll treat you."
"Two people are already in surgery undergoing ergency treatnt, and one person’s condition is still unclear. Adding your friend with the burns to that, everyone just needs to calm down. The New Year is only a few days away. Do this favor, alright?"
"Doctor, will his face really be okay?" the leader of the group asked.
She couldn’t make any definitive promises, having only glanced at it. But her priority now was to de-escalate the situation; it looked like they were hiding weapons in their clothes. "From what I can see, it doesn’t look too serious," Liu Banxia said. "After all, the clay pots at the barbecue restaurant aren’t heated from below. Blisters, in this case, can sotis be a good thing, offering so protection to the skin."
After this prolonged attempt to pacify them, the group’s emotions finally stabilized. As they were moving to the seats, one of the n fumbled, and a screwdriver dropped from inside his clothes.
"Let hold onto these for you all. Don’t worry, I’m not going to steal them," Liu Banxia said with a smile.
She walked over to the leader of the group. "We can’t make things difficult for the police officer, can we? If I hold onto them, he can pretend he didn’t see anything."
The leader hesitated for a mont, then also pulled a screwdriver from his clothes.
Their "weapons" consisted mostly of screwdrivers, but there were also, surprisingly, two utility knives. These shouldn’t be underestimated; they were very sharp.
Upon asking, it turned out they were renovation workers. Today was their leader’s birthday, and the group was just out to have so fun after finishing work, but they unexpectedly got caught up in this ss.
"These n have all been drinking. We’ll need your help to keep an eye on them," Liu Banxia said to the police officer after stowing the items away.
"Don’t worry, Officer. They were all brought here because it’s the closest facility. Otherwise, they would have been triaged to different hospitals," the police officer replied with a nod.
"It’s not a major issue for us. We’ll just have to see how the three who went into surgery are doing. Later, please help us compile a list of their nas and contact their families. Anyway, we’re used to pulling all-nighters. You officers have it tough too," Liu Banxia said.
"It’s the sa for both of us. It’s always the most chaotic ti right before the New Year," the police officer said with a wry smile.
It was a mont of mutual understanding. Doctors and police officers alike—they’re busy when others are busy, and they’re still busy when others are resting.
The ergency center, for instance, hadn’t experienced such a large-scale incident during a night shift in a long ti. Tonight served as a stark reminder for everyone.
She didn’t have much ti for chatting. After calming the people outside, she also had to check on the patient with the burn.
