The convoy stretched nearly half a mile across the frozen northern road.

Steam wagons creaked beneath enormous loads of:

refined steel ingots,

processed coal,

timber,

and furnace supplies.

Beside them marched disciplined rifle escorts wrapped in dark winter coats while mounted scouts watched the surrounding ridges carefully through the snowfall.

This was not rely a trade convoy.

It was the lifeblood of Elarion itself.

Steel for rifles. Coal for furnaces. Resources for industry.

And everyone knew it.

Especially House Valcriox.

The western frontier checkpoint had changed drastically during recent weeks.

What once resembled a simple inspection post now looked like a military fortification.

Stone barricades blocked the road. Southern cavalry patrolled the ridges. Temporary watchtowers overlooked the pass.

And waiting directly ahead—

Three hundred southern soldiers.

The Elarion convoy slowed imdiately.

The lead convoy captain narrowed his eyes beneath the falling snow.

"This again."

A southern officer rode forward calmly atop a gray warhorse while armored knights followed behind him.

"By authority of House Valcriox," he announced loudly, "this convoy will halt for inspection."

The convoy captain stared coldly at the expanded military presence surrounding the road.

"This many soldiers for steel shipnts?"

The southern officer smiled faintly.

"Security concerns."

Of course.

Everything had beco "security concerns."

The captain slowly climbed down from the lead wagon.

"You inspected our convoy two days ago."

"And we will inspect it again."

Behind the southern barricades, more cavalry began appearing from reserve positions.

Too many.

Far too many.

This was no normal checkpoint.

The Elarion captain understood imdiately.

They were escalating.

The southern officer gestured calmly toward the wagons.

"Unload the cargo."

"No."

Silence spread across the snowy road instantly.

The officer’s faint smile disappeared.

"No?"

"This convoy continues north."

Several southern knights shifted imdiately while hands rested near sword hilts.

The wind howled between the mountain cliffs around them.

Cold.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

The southern commander’s voice hardened slightly.

"You misunderstand your position."

"No," the Elarion captain answered calmly.

"You misunderstand ours."

That changed the atmosphere imdiately.

Because fear was expected.

Submission was expected.

This—

This was defiance.

The southern officer slowly rode closer.

"By order of House Valcriox, all industrial shipnts entering Elarion territory are subject to military inspection."

The convoy captain looked directly at him.

"And by order of Elarion..."

Riflen behind the convoy shifted formation slightly.

"...you touch one crate."

Silence.

Then coldly:

"And this becos military action."

The southern cavalry imdiately tensed.

Several knights drew partial inches of steel from scabbards.

Elarion riflen raised weapons.

Not fully aid.

Yet.

Snow continued falling quietly around both forces while steam hissed from the halted wagons.

One nervous horse stamped against the frozen ground.

No one moved.

Then finally—

The southern commander smiled thinly.

"Very well."

Relief almost appeared.

Then:

"We will seize the convoy instead."

Everything froze.

Because that sentence crossed the line completely.

The first rifleman chambered a round into his rifle.

Click.

A tiny sound.

Yet sohow it echoed louder than cannon fire.

Southern knights imdiately drew weapons fully.

Mana gathered around several battlefield mages near the barricades.

The convoy captain slowly stepped backward.

Then raised one hand sharply.

Rifle lines ford instantly around the convoy.

Perfectly drilled. Perfectly disciplined.

The southern commander’s expression finally changed.

Because now—

This no longer resembled rchants protecting cargo.

This resembled soldiers preparing for battle.

A scout suddenly rode hard toward the southern checkpoint from the northern road.

He nearly threw himself from the saddle.

"Commander!"

The officer looked irritated already.

"What?"

The scout pointed northward through the snowstorm.

"They’re coming."

The sound arrived first.

Heavy. Rhythmic.

Thousands of boots crushing snow.

Then dark shapes erged through the blizzard.

Rifle columns.

Endless rifle columns.

The 1st Elarion Rifle Regint marched into the western pass beneath falling snow while dark banners moved above disciplined formations like shadows in the storm.

Field cannons followed behind them.

Twenty of them.

Iron monsters dragged into firing positions overlooking the valley roads.

And at the front—

Malen.

The peak knight rode silently atop his black warhorse while snow gathered across his dark military coat.

Behind him marched death.

Disciplined death.

The southern soldiers visibly stiffened.

Because this was not a noble levy. Not frontier militia.

This was an army.

And it moved like one.

Malen stopped near the convoy lines before calmly surveying the southern fortifications below.

Then:

"Cannons forward."

The artillery crews moved imdiately.

Fast. Efficient. Practiced.

Within minutes the Elarion cannons overlooked the checkpoint directly.

The southern commander stared upward silently.

The realization finally hit him.

This had escalated too far.

Farther south along the pass road—

Additional southern reinforcents continued arriving.

Cavalry. Knights. Mage detachnts.

Military pressure had beco military mobilization almost overnight.

And now nobody knew how to stop it cleanly.

One southern noble officer lowered his spyglass slowly after observing the Elarion lines.

"...They ca prepared for war."

Another officer answered grimly.

"No."

His eyes remained fixed on the artillery batteries above the ridge.

"They prepared for this long before today."

That truth spread uneasily through the southern camp.

Because if Lucien anticipated this escalation—

Then Elarion’s reaction was not emotional.

It was planned.

By nightfall the western frontier pass had beco a battlefield waiting for permission to begin.

Thousands of soldiers occupied both sides of the valley while campfires burned beneath heavy snowfall.

Cannons aid downward across the frozen roads. Riflen waited behind defensive earthworks. Knight patrols watched each other constantly through the darkness.

No one trusted anyone anymore.

Inside the Elarion command position overlooking the pass, Malen studied the southern fortifications beside Cedric and Lucas.

Lucas looked deeply uncomfortable.

"This started over steel shipnts."

Cedric crossed his arms.

"No."

His eyes remained fixed on the southern lines below.

"This started because the south realized Elarion won’t kneel."

Fair.

Very fair honestly.

Then movent spread behind the Elarion lines.

A black steam wagon rolled slowly through the snow before stopping near the command ridge.

Lucien stepped out calmly into the storm.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Officers straightened. ssengers moved faster. Even the soldiers nearby seed steadier.

Not because Lucien inspired emotional devotion.

But because he inspired certainty.

And certainty mattered enormously before battle.

Lucien walked toward the ridge overlooking the southern checkpoint while snow drifted around him silently.

Below:

southern cavalry waited,

knights stood ard,

mana artillery glowed faintly,

banners of House Valcriox snapped through the wind.

Then his gaze shifted toward the halted convoy.

Steel. Coal. Industry.

The foundation of Elarion itself.

Cedric stepped beside him quietly.

"They attempted seizure."

Lucien nodded once.

"Expected."

Lucas looked toward him sharply.

"You expected this?"

"Yes."

No anger. No outrage.

Only calculation.

That honestly frightened Lucas slightly.

Malen approached monts later.

"Artillery prepared."

"Range?"

"Optimal."

Lucien looked across the southern fortifications silently for several long monts.

Then finally spoke.

"If they advance beyond the barricades..."

Snow blew violently across the ridge.

"...destroy the checkpoint like it never existed."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Because everyone there understood imdiately:

Lucien was genuinely ready to begin a war.

Not recklessly.

Not emotionally.

Deliberately.

Below the ridge, thousands of soldiers waited beneath the storm while cannons remained aid across the frozen valley.

One spark.

One order.

One mistake.

And the kingdom would burn.
