“Report!” A clear voice rang out outside the little wooden hut.

An old man who was chatting with two other people called towards the door, “Co in!”

“Report to the commander!

The Total Commander of Operation Night Owl has arrived!” The soldier stood at the door, looking tall and distinguished as he spoke.

“Hahaha…

Speak of the devil!

Cao Cao arrives!

Please, co in quickly!” The old man said with a beaming smile.

“Snap!” The polished leather shoes stamped on the ground, followed by a resounding voice after a standard military salute, “Liu Hun from the General Staff Departnt reporting for duty!”

“Good lad!

You’ve really shaped up in just a few months, co in!” The old man pulled Liu Hun into the wooden hut, and the soldier behind him imdiately closed the door.

“Let introduce you to everyone, this is the Total Commander of Operation Night Owl, Comrade Colonel Liu Hun, specially dispatched by the General Staff Departnt,” said the old man to the two people in the room.

“Snap,” “Snap,” the two people in the room also returned the salute to Liu Hun with military precision.

“Alright, now that we have all t, let’s not be too formal,” said the old man cheerfully, and then turning to Liu Hun, he pointed at the two people in the room, “My dear nephew, these two are the operatives who will be working with you on Operation Night Owl.

Don’t be fooled by their appearance as girls; in combat, they can take on two platoons with no problem.

If they’re ard, that’s even more formidable.”

Liu Hun scanned over the two won and realized that they were twins, with identical heights and features, making it difficult to distinguish who was who.

Moreover, they had strong, well-defined faces and bright, expressive eyes that could rival Li Hongxia’s.

“From now on, Colonel Liu Hun will be your highest commanding officer, you must obey his commands absolutely and make sure to protect him well,” the old man seriously instructed the twin sisters.

The sisters quickly stood up and saluted in unison, affirming their compliance.

“Here are your Hong Kong passports and new identities; from this mont on, you have no connection with the General Staff.

The only person you must obey is Liu Hun, and you must not follow any orders issued by anyone else.

That’s all, you may leave!” The old man finished speaking to the two sisters and motioned for them to leave with a wave of his hand.

After the two sisters left the wooden hut, only Liu Hun and the old man were left in the room.

“Xiao Liu, I hope you can understand my actions.

There are many things about Central that you do not understand.

As long as you know that I an well, that is enough,” the old man said with a sigh, “I also know you have many attachnts and using this thod to bring you here may seem abrupt, but it is for your protection.

You must understand.”

“Please rest assured, Commander, Liu Hun understands,” Liu Hun saluted the old man.

The old man nodded, took out a set of docunts from behind him, and said to Liu Hun, “This is your new identity, take a look.”

“Liu Hun, male, Han ethnicity…

Graduate of Tsinghua University…

Foster father…

Director of the General Political Departnt…

Liao Congrong…

Awarded the rank of colonel on March 20th of XX year…” Liu Hun beca puzzled as he read on, looking up at the old man.

The old man of course knew Liu Hun had many questions and said to him, “There are too many people with the sa na in this world, the original Liu Hun is dead, but that does not affect the existence of another Liu Hun.

I also hope you can keep your original na as a sign of respect…

Arranging this identity for you was a decision made by Liao and .

On one hand, it’s to protect you, and on the other, of course, for your future.

Liao and I both have high hopes for you; we hope you can achieve great things in the future.”

Liu Hun nodded, recalling the conversation he heard in the shabby hostel when he was picked up by two smartly dressed n—it must have been between Liao Congrong and the old man before him.

However, he did not know what significant changes had occurred for him to have to fake his death.

“You will understand the future events in ti,” said the old man to Liu Hun.

Liu Hun nodded and suddenly rembered sothing, so he asked, “Chief of the General Staff, I have a question to ask.”

The old man chuckled, “There’s no one else here, just call Uncle Xia.”

“Yes!” Liu Hun nodded and asked, “Uncle Xia…

How is Xia Yanran doing?”

“Hahaha…” Xia Mingren laughed heartily, “You really are a romantic!

The first ti I t you at the Qionghua City toll station, I could see that the girl was interested in you.”

After teasing Liu Hun, Xia Mingren sighed deeply and said, “The matters of young love, I as an old man don’t know much about…

The girl cried and made a fuss when she heard of your death, even refused to eat for many days, and later it was thanks to your colleagues in Yu Bei City that she gradually recovered.

As for the future…

if she forgets about you, then she can let go.

If she can’t forget…”

Speaking earnestly, Xia Mingren appraised Liu Hun, “You could still make a fine son-in-law for !”

As Xia Mingren spoke, Liu Hun felt much more at ease, knowing that with Xiao Yanzi around, many issues could quickly settle down.

“Don’t worry!

After you complete this mission, you’ll have made a great achievent.

It’ll serve as capital for your promotion.

Moreover…

by the ti you return, the issues above should mostly be sorted out,” Xia Mingren said, and he took out several items to give to Liu Hun, “This is your Hong Kong passport and new identity, here is three million Hong Kong Dollars, the budget is limited so the rest is up to you.

The specific details of the operation will be disclosed once you arrive in Hong Kong and soone will make contact with you.”

“Yes!” Liu Hun took the items that Xia Mingren handed over.

“Take good care of yourself,” Xia Mingren patted Liu Hun’s shoulder and instructed.

Two days later, Liu Hun and his party of three arrived in Hong Kong.

As soon as they disembarked from the plane, they saw a middle-aged man wearing glasses holding a sign looking for them, and shortly after, the trio was taken to the man’s house.

“General Staff Departnt’s Hong Kong liaison officer Hua Gui pays his respects to the commander!” The middle-aged man entered the house and gave Liu Hun a standard military salute.

“In this place, there’s no need for excessive formalities.

Let’s go inside and talk,” Liu Hun said as he entered the room with Hua Gui, while the two sisters Cai Ya and Cai Qian stood guard alertly by the door.

Hua Gui, although unaware of the two sisters’ identities, understood from his years of intelligence work that so questions were better left unasked.

“Colonel Liu, the specifics of the mission are here; it’s top secret, and I’m not authorized to open it,” Hua Gui said while prying open a floor tile, from which he retrieved a securely sealed tal safe.

He then took out a key, inserted it, turned to Liu Hun, and said, “Colonel Liu, please use your key.”

Liu Hun inserted the key Xia Mingren had given him, entered the code, and opened the safe to reveal a sealed folder lying quietly inside.

“Colonel Liu, I will excuse myself now,” Hua Gui said as he stood and promptly left the room.

Liu Hun used a small knife to cut open the folder and started carefully reading through the docunts.

After more than half an hour, he snapped back to reality, taken aback that Xia Mingren had actually given him such a herculean task — to head to the Yunnan-Myanmar area for testing a new drug and to undergo secret training for “Operation Night Owl.” The testing of the new drug was likely to produce side effects, naly: temporary amnesia!

“Whew!

Old Xia is truly ruthless; a re three million and two won in exchange for playing guinea pig,” Liu Hun felt waves of dizziness.

Although during his “death” in the past few months, he endured countless hardships and training, but there were so things he had his own understanding of, not like those who had been trained there from a young age.

After reading it, Liu Hun followed the instructions in the docunts and burned them, leaving only a few contact thods for certain individuals.

When Liu Hun put the new drug in his mouth, his brain seed to be controlled by sothing, and he only rembered following the sisters Cai Ya and Cai Qian to Hong Kong, where he t the General Staff’s liaison.

After that, all his mories were fragnted.

Later, when recalling those events, Liu Hun’s mind was filled with either brutal, vivid, or bizarre and strange occurrences, and a series of odd thoughts would involuntarily spring into his mind.

“Is Operation Night Owl completed?” Liu Hun asked the sisters Cai Ya and Cai Qian beside him; he was already in the Hong Kong International Airport’s waiting hall, and the drug Xia had tested on him seed to have worn off.

He finally regained full control of his body and was completely lucid.

Both sisters nodded at Liu Hun, each preoccupied with their own thoughts.

The elder sister dared not look directly at Liu Hun, while the younger sister still tried to discern sothing from Liu Hun’s gaze.

“Do I…

now have so sort of ability?” Liu Hun looked at his hands and continued to ask the sisters Cai Ya and Cai Qian.

He could only recall fragnts of Operation Night Owl, making him feel as if he had been in a strange dream, a dream in which his hands seed to possess a wonderful power to destroy many things.

“The Chief of General Staff instructed that only he has access to many of the data,” Cai Ya dismissed Liu Hun with a brief reply.

Knowing the organization’s discipline well, Liu Hun still wanted to understand so things, so he turned and asked, “What exactly did we do during the operation?

Why do I only rember fragnts?”

Cai Ya glanced at her sister Cai Qian, then told Liu Hun, “That is also part of Operation Night Owl; we cannot answer.”

It seed these two won were not going to speak, and probably even Xia Mingren, the old fox, would not tell the truth when he returned to Beijing.

The bizarre “Operation Night Owl” seed like sothing he would have to figure out on his own in the future.

“Let’s go!

We’ll return to Beijing to report!” Liu Hun said as he stood up and walked towards the boarding gate.

A red flag sedan slowly drove into the courtyard of the General Staff Departnt, and at that mont, the elderly man waiting in the courtyard wore a content smile to greet the arriving car.

“Thud!” The car door opened, and a handso man in military uniform stepped out, walked straight to the elderly man, and gave a crisp military salute, “Colonel Liu Hun of the General Staff has successfully completed Operation Night Owl!”

The elderly man returned the salute and patted Liu Hun’s shoulder firmly, “I knew I hadn’t chosen wrong!

Good job, young man!”

“Thank you for the comndation, Chief of General Staff,” Liu Hun said with a smile to Xia Mingren.

Xia Mingren signaled to the staff, and a soldier carrying a ceremonial tray approached.

“The organization highly praises your performance this ti, and upon approval from the leadership, I formally promote Comrade Liu Hun to the rank of Major General!” Xia Mingren said as he removed Liu Hun’s Colonel epaulettes and adorned him with the Major General epaulettes from the tray.

“Since your mission was special, conducted in secret rather than openly, the ceremony is a bit simple,” Xia Mingren explained to Liu Hun.

Not one to covet vanity, Liu Hun understood completely and nodded, knowing full well the myriad of questions in his mind but restraining himself from asking.

If Xia Mingren wasn’t forthcoming, there was no point in asking.

“Don’t get cocky, lad!

There are more important tasks waiting for you!

Co with !” Xia Mingren gestured for Liu Hun to follow.

Liu Hun followed Xia Mingren to the General Staff’s reception room, wondering if he could be dispatched to godforsaken places like Congo or Zimbabwe next.

Xia Mingren led Liu Hun into the reception room, where they found a middle-aged man with gold-rimd glasses and a refined deanor sitting inside.

“Allow to introduce our young talent from the General Staff, Major General Liu Hun,” Xia Mingren introduced with pride.

“A pleasure to et you, Major General Liu!” The middle-aged man extended his hand.

“This gentleman is the General Manager of the National Investnt Bank, Yan Shenghan,” Xia Mingren introduced to Liu Hun.

“Nice to et you, Manager Yan,” Liu Hun said as he shook hands politely with Yan Shenghan.

“Sit down, let’s talk,” Xia Mingren urged the two to sit, then turned to Liu Hun, “The task I have for you this ti is quite special.”

Liu Hun twitched at the ntion, a foreboding sense brewing within him.
