Now reading: Chapter 125: Golden Boot and Assist King? from The Golden Striker: Barcelona’s Football King, a Action novel by Shadownarch.

The San Paolo replay screens were already cycling through the pass - that specific corridor, that angle, that pace and the crowd's processing of it had shifted from stunned silence into sothing lower and more dangerous. A hum. The particular register of sixty thousand people who have been hurt and are calculating the response.

In the broadcast booth, Santiago was still going. "Any other striker at this level, anyone recycles that ball back to Busquets under triple-pressure. Lorenzo chose the only line in the stadium that ended the move with a goal. Sixty tres, through a gap asured in inches, arriving perfectly into ssi's stride."

Inés watched the trajectory on her screen. "He didn't find ssi. He found the space ssi was about to occupy, which requires knowing where ssi will be before ssi knows it himself. If he maintains this rate, the Golden Boot conversation becos inseparable from the Assist King conversation. He's doing both simultaneously."

Across the technical area, Benítez had stopped looking at his tablet and was already issuing corrections. He spoke quietly to Jorginho, to Fernández, to Albiol. Stay within two tres, not three. Do not step out of line. Do not give him the view into the final third. His assistant wrote it down.

"The data was insufficient," Benítez muttered, almost to himself. "His passing? A 360-degree awareness of players he cannot see, that is not in any profile I have ever built." He turned back to the pitch with the expression of a man revising his calculations mid-theorem. "We hold the shape. He has one assist. He does not yet have the goals."

Fweet—!

"Ghoulam - stay ho. No more attempts to overlap. Fernández, Albiol - do not step out of line. If he has the ball near the halfway, drop. Do not give him the view." He looked at Jorginho. "Stay within two tres of him at all tis. Not three. Two."

His assistant marked it down. "And if he drops deeper to receive?"

"Then Behrami follows him down. We cannot leave him with a clean look at the final third." Benítez turned back to the pitch.

The Vesuvius Legion restarted with a different quality of urgency. Higuaín - 107 goals for Real Madrid, the Pipita who had operated alongside Ronaldo and Benzema at the peak of the Spanish ga, was not a player who accepted being outshone in his own stadium. He drove into the Barça half with the focus of a striker reclaiming a narrative.

In the 26th minute, the pressure found an opening. Callejón - who had spent his Madrid years largely on the bench watching others take his position, and had arrived in Naples to prove that the bench had been wrong about him, ignited on the right flank and burned past Alba with a burst of pure pace. He hooked the ball inside to Hamšík.

"THE CONNECTION IS FIRING!"

The Slovakian drove into the heart of the Barcelona defence. Busquets read the pass to Higuaín a fraction early and committed - a fierce, cynical sliding tackle that won the ball and took the leg simultaneously. Hamšík went down hard.

Fweet—!

Yellow card. Free kick at the edge of the D.

Hamšík stood up slowly, adjusting his mohawk. He had arrived at Napoli at seventeen and stayed when the northern clubs ca calling, when the money was better elsewhere, when every sumr brought new rumours. The San Paolo had given him back sothing in exchange, a belonging that few players found at any club. He breathed once, twice. He placed the ball.

Lorenzo turned to the wall as it ford. "He has a whip on him. Don't jump early."

Valdés adjusted his positioning. The wall settled - Piqué, Mascherano, Xavi, Iniesta lined up to cover the near post.

Hamšík took his run-up - short, rhythmic, his right foot striking the bottom of the ball with an outward-spinning motion that imdiately bent the trajectory away from the wall's reach.

The ball cleared the wall by centitres, dipped late, and scread toward the top-right corner.

Valdés dived - full horizontal stretch, hand reaching. His fingertips found the leather.

But the ball hit the inside of the net.

SWISH!

1-1.

The San Paolo detonated. Sixty thousand people erupting in the particular way of a crowd that had been waiting for this specific mont since the minute ssi's goal went in. Hamšík sprinted toward the corner flag, his mohawk catching the stadium lights, Higuaín and Callejón catching him before he reached it.

"GOAL!! HAMŠÍK!! THE MAESTRO STRIKES BACK!" Santiago called. "Valdés got a hand to it and it went in anyway - the placent was too precise, the dip too late. 1-1! The Vesuvius Legion has restored the temple, and the Battle for the diterranean is level again at the half-hour mark."

Inés was asured. "That is the free kick Hamšík has been practising for years. The wall was correctly set. Valdés made the correct dive. The ball bent past both. That is the quality of a player who has turned down better offers to perfect that specific delivery at this specific ground. Credit where it's due."

Lorenzo stood at the edge of the box, watching Hamšík accept the embrace of his teammates. He looked at the scoreboard. 1-1, 29th minute. The assist was done. Two goals still needed.

He walked back to the halfway line.
