The forest at midnight was a tapestry of deep shadows and oppressive silence, broken only by the intermittent chirp of crickets and the rustle of unseen creatures.

Kushina, bound tightly to the rough bark of the oak, felt the chill of the night seep into her bones. Her face was pale, smudged with dirt and dried tears. Panic, a cold serpent, coiled in her stomach. Is anyone coming? Will anyone co? She had seen the Konoha ANBU fall during the day, their desperate fight silenced by the Kumo ninjas' brutal efficiency. Since then, nothing but the mocking confidence of her captors. Each passing hour took her closer to the Fire Country's border, and with it, a future of unimaginable horror—a lab specin, a tool to be dissected for her clan's secrets.

The thought made her small fra tremble uncontrollably.

Shhh.

A sound. Fainter than a sigh, softer than a leaf's touch. It ca from directly behind the massive tree trunk she was tied to. A sound that cut through her despair like a sliver of light in a sealed tomb. And it was familiar.

Her heart hamred against her ribs. Who?

"…it's ."

The voice was low, calm, utterly devoid of panic. And she knew it. She would know that flat, serious tone anywhere.

Ragnar.

A shock of pure, disbelieving joy surged through her, warming her frozen core. He ca for ? But it was followed instantly by a wave of terror. No, you idiot! Why?! These were not academy bullies. These were killers. Jonin.

"Go," she whispered, the sound barely leaving her lips. "Get out of here. Now."

"Don't talk nonsense." His reply was imdiate, a command brooking no argunt. "We're leaving. Together."

The finality in his voice stole her breath. She fell silent.

She felt the pressure on her bonds ease, then vanish as a kunai, wielded with silent precision, severed the ropes. Her numb arms fell to her sides. She turned, and there he was. In the deep shadow of the tree, his face was all sharp angles and focused intensity, his eyes scanning the clearing. He looked older than eight in that mont, a veteran assessing a battlefield.

He grabbed her wrist, his grip firm. This way.

They took one step, then two, moving with ghostly quiet towards the thicker darkness of the forest.

"Just where do you two think you're going?"

The voice was a lazy drawl, dripping with amusent and arrogance. It ca from above.

Ragnar's head snapped up. The two Kumo ninjas were no longer lounging against the trees on the far side. They stood perched on a high branch twenty feet away, looking down like hawks who had been watching mice scurry all along. A trap. He'd walked right into it, drawn by the obvious bait.

"What do we do?" Kushina breathed, her hope crumbling as fast as it had blood.

"Stay behind ." Ragnar's voice didn't waver. He pushed her gently but firmly back, placing his body between her and the Kumo-nin. His eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto the two figures.

"I was hoping Konoha would send soone actually worth my ti," the larger ninja mocked. He was a mountain of muscle clad in Kumo's distinctive grey and white leather armor, his skin a deep bronze. Lightning seed to crackle in the air around him. "But another brat? Is this all the great Konoha has left?"

His companion was leaner, wiry, but radiated a similar predatory confidence. The harsh climate and relentless training of Kumogakure produced shinobi built like fortresses; their average physique was the envy and dread of the other nations.

"By openly abducting a Konoha citizen," Ragnar said, stalling, his mind racing, "you're trying to start the Second War early."

"War?" The large ninja—Captain Armani, by the lean one's address—barked a laugh. "Kid, the strong make the rules. Konoha is rotting from within if it sends children to fight its battles. Where is the White Fang? Hiding?"

"Probably scared the Legendary White Fang will break against our strength, Captain!" the lean ninja sneered.

Armani laughed again, a deep, grating sound. "Hah! True!"

Ragnar's expression remained impassive. "If the White Fang were here," he stated, his voice flat as a blade, "you'd both be dead already. It wouldn't even be a fight."

The amusent vanished from Armani's face, replaced by cold fury. "Arrogant little worm! If White Fang won't co, I'll settle for crushing you!"

Crackle-ZZZT!

Blue-white arcs of electricity erupted across Armani's body, making his hair stand on end and casting jagged shadows around the clearing. This was Kumo's signature: Nin-Taijutsu. The fusion of chakra enhancent with brutal physicality, creating speed and power that pure taijutsu could never match. It was different from the Eight Gates—which unleashed the body's own latent steam and heat—this was raw Lightning Release chakra supercharging muscle and nerve.

"Another jonin," Ragnar noted internally. The chakra output was imnse, nearly tangible. This was the man who had mortally wounded the Boar.

"What's wrong, brat? Scared stiff?" Armani taunted. Then he moved.

Flash!

It was pure speed. Even with Observation Haki painting his intent, Ragnar's body, fatigued and pushed to its limit, lagged a critical fraction behind the prediction. Armani was suddenly there, his fist a cot of crackling energy.

"Nin-Taijutsu: Thunderclap Fist!"

BOOM!

The punch didn't just hit; it discharged. The concussive force of the blow, amplified by the explosive lightning, lifted Ragnar off his feet and sent him hurtling backwards. He smashed through a thick shrub and cratered the trunk of a younger tree with a sickening crunch, sliding to the ground in a heap of splintered wood and dust.

"RAGNAR!" Kushina scread, her voice raw.

"Shut up, you little red-haired rodent." Armani backhanded her casually. The blow wasn't ant to kill, but to disable. She was knocked sprawling, her cry cut short as her head hit a root, dazing her.

Armani didn't spare her another glance. He stalked towards the debris where Ragnar lay, lightning coiling eagerly around his right arm. It elongated, solidified, crackling with malicious intent into a spear of pure, condensed electricity.

"Not long ago," Armani said conversationally, as if discussing the weather, "a Konoha dog in a boar mask thought he could track us. I put one of these through his heart. He ran, but the heart was pulp. He's dead in a ditch sowhere. Now it's your turn."

He looked down at Ragnar, who was struggling to push himself up on one elbow, his face a mask of pain and stubborn defiance.

"Don't take it personally, kid," Armani said, a strange, almost philosophical note in his voice. "The shinobi world has never known real peace. We kill, we get killed. It's a wheel that's turned for centuries. No one can stop it."

He raised the lightning spear, its tip sizzling in the night air. "Least of all you."

He thrust down.

SCHLICK!

A wet, piercing sound. Ragnar's body convulsed, his eyes flying wide, blood spraying from his mouth.

"It's over," Armani stated, pulling the electric spear back. A flicker of sothing—weariness?—crossed his features. Killing children, even enemy ones, never sat right.

"B-Boss…!"

The voice was a strangled gurgle of agony. It ca from behind him.

Armani whirled.

His lean subordinate, the mocking one, was staring down at his own chest in utter disbelief. Protruding from the center of it was an identical spear of crackling blue lightning.

Standing behind him, one hand on the "spear's" hilt—which was, in fact, his own Armant Haki-hardened arm sheathed in volatile, newly-awakened Phoenix fla disguised as lightning—was Ragnar. His clothes were torn, his face sared with dirt from the crater, but his eyes were clear, cold, and fixed on Armani. A devilish, triumphant smile touched his lips.

"You killed my comrade," Ragnar said, his voice eerily calm. "Now I've killed yours. That's the truth of your world, isn't it?"

Armani's head snapped back to the crater. The "Ragnar" he had just impaled dissolved into a puff of white smoke.

POOF!

A Substitute Jutsu. A basic Academy technique, executed with flawless timing under the cover of the debris cloud.

And not just that. He glanced at where Kushina had fallen. Her form too shimred and collapsed into a simple log.

POOF!

He had been playing against a shadow and a piece of wood from the very beginning.

The real Ragnar stood over the dying lean ninja, his Haki-clad arm, wreathed in blue-gold fire he'd shaped to mimic Lightning Release, withdrawing from the fatal wound. The real Kushina was nowhere to be seen—likely hidden by Ragnar the mont he cut her bonds.

Armani's face twisted with a rage so profound it silenced the lightning around him for a second. He had been outmaneuvered, humiliated, by a child.

"You…" he snarled, the word a promise of annihilation.

Ragnar t his gaze, his smile gone, replaced by the cold focus of a hunter. The first move of the real battle had been his.

Now ca the storm.
