His voice seemed to frightened Mu Li and she hung up right away.
Sheng Yize frowned and dialed back, but was told that the phone was switched off.
He called Qi Yanxi after that. “Where’s Mu Li?”
Qi Yanxi had drunk himself into a stupor and said with a slur, “Huh? What was that?”
Hearing his drunk voice, Sheng Yize hung up right away. He then contacted his assistant, asking the latter to find Mu Li’s whereabouts.

On a beach.
It was well after dark. The tide was rising and the waves were crashing loudly.
With a despairing look on her face, Mu Li slowly walked into the water.
Rewind time to three hours ago.
Mu Li received a phone call from a casino. “Get 50 million ready or we’re chopping off your old man’s hand!”
Her father was screaming on the other end. “Ah Li, help me… You can’t just give me up. Ask your husband for some money!”
Mu Li said between broken sobs, “Dad, didn’t you promise me that you’d stop gambling? And, it’s 50 million we’re talking about here… Qi Yanxi isn’t some bottomless wallet. How am I supposed to ask him for that much money?”
Her father was enraged. “You’re my daughter! What’s wrong with asking him for 50 million to save me? You ungrateful girl! I’m so disappointed!”
Mu Li was trembling. “Did you ever… try to be a responsible father at all?”
Growing up, he had brought her nothing but endless pain and shame. Why wouldn’t he leave her alone?
Her father was still cursing and swearing on the other end, so she simply hung up.
However, shortly afterward, her mother arrived on her doorstep and knelt down, all teary-eyed. “Ah Li, you can’t just stand there and do nothing! After all, he’s your father. Are you going to just let them kill him?”
“Mum! He had this ing all along! Wake up!” Mu Li was so frustrated. “You have to stop pushing me… I’ve divorced Qi Yanxi. I’m nothing to him now!”
Her mother was dazed for a few seconds at the news before she grabbed Mu Li by her wrist. “How can you be so stupid? You can have everything as his wife — good food, money, everything! Why did you divorce him?!”
Mu Li felt her heart grow cold and she only chuckled. Her mother asked anxiously, “How much money did you get? Is there enough to pay back your dad’s debts? Or get us through the rest of our lives?”
“…” Mu Li now saw that loving parents weren’t a guarantee in this world.
They never asked how sad or hurt she was after the divorce. All they cared about was their own welfare.
Her phone rang and she picked it up. It was Li Fanxing.
She heard Li Fanxing’s smug voice on the other end. “Need help?”
Mu Li clenched her fists. She knew perfectly well that Li Fanxing was going to force her to do things again.
“No…” Mu Li said decisively. “Li Fanxing, you’re not going to threaten me ever again.”
She hung up, then blocked Li Fanxing’s number.
Her mother was crying hysterically. “What are you doing? Ah Li, e back… Where are you going?”
Mu Li didn’t stop and soon walked out of sight.

Slowly, she was submerged in the water. Salty, stinging water rushed into her mouth and nostrils, suffocating her, but Mu Li only felt relieved.
The phone she left on the beach was set to the text message page and she had only left a single line behind.
“Dad, mum, here’s my life. I owe you nothing now.”
Before she lost consciousness, she saw an innocent, lovely baby, who giggled at her.
Was that the baby she had lost?
“Baby… mum is ing to you…”
