Titanic had made over $100 million. Even though the newspapers and theaters had ignored it, now everyone was paying attention.
After its first day, the movie had only made about $10 million for the next two days. Compared to its giant cost, this was seen as a huge failure.
But... in its second week, it made over $35 million! It was the number one movie in Arica!
But even that didn't get people's attention. The newspapers just said it was "bleeding money" and focused on all the other bad movies that ca out. Titanic was just... forgotten.
The scariest thing in the world is to be forgotten. The director, Jas Caron, was so upset he was "crying in the restroom."
In the third week, Titanic made another $33.3 million. It was still the number one movie. It had been out for three weeks, and its box office had quietly passed $100 million!
"What? How did it make $100 million?" "Did Fox and Paramount buy all the tickets themselves?" "No, that can't be right. They're both losing money. They don't have cash to buy tickets."
The movie theaters were the first to notice sothing strange was happening. They were the ones counting the money. Then, the dia and the critics started to notice, too.
And you know who really noticed? Caron's old rival, the critic Asim Albert.
"Oh my gosh!" Asim frowned. "How did its box office quietly pass $100 million? Is it possible... could this movie still turn things around?!"
He was very, very worried. He did not want Titanic to be a hit.
But in the fourth week, Asim's worries ca true. The ship made another $28.7 million! It was the number one movie for the fourth week in a row. The box office had barely dropped at all.
"Unbelievable!" a bunch of reporters exclaid.
"Hahaha, we were wrong!" a theater boss marveled. "We all thought Titanic would lose a ton of money, but it's been number one for four weeks straight! It's made over $135 million!"
The bosses at Fox and Paramount were shocked. "Who said our movie would lose money? Look at it now!"
But the most important thing was the audience. They didn't just like the film. They loved it. They were "calling their friends and family" and telling everyone to go see it. Many people were even going back to see it a second or third ti!
Because of this, in its fifth week, sothing amazing happened. The box office didn't go down. It went UP!
It made over $36 million that week. It was the biggest week the movie had had since it ca out!
...
Back at Wald Pictures, Kevin Fitch looked at Zane, his eyes wide. "Boss, this is incredible! It's been a month, and the movie is making more money, not less! This is so rare. It's... it's a miracle!"
"It is a miracle," Zane agreed, smiling.
This had almost never happened before in movie history.
"Boss," CEO Victor added, "the ship's box office might pass $300 million in North Arica. And if people overseas love it, too... the worldwide box office could easily reach $800 million!"
"$800 million?" Kevin said. "Mr. Jones, that's crazy. That's as big as Jurassic Park. Is that even possible?"
Victor didn't know what to say.
Zane just laughed, his voice full of excitent and confidence. "Victor, trust your gut! And Kevin, I agree. Titanic won't be the next Jurassic Park..."
He paused, a huge, happy grin on his face.
"...because I firmly believe it's going to beat Jurassic Park! You heard ! It's going to beat Spielberg's biggest movie ever!"
Victor and Kevin just stared at him. Their boss was saying it would make over $1 billion! They didn't believe it. Even the movie's own director, Jas Caron, didn't believe it.
But... as the box office went up, up, up, the Titanic "hype" spread. Everyone was talking about the love story of Jack and Rose, the amazing special effects, and that beautiful song, "My Heart Will Go On."
In its sixth week, it made another $25 million. In its seventh week, it made another $25.9 million.
After seven weeks, it was still the number one movie. It had now made $224 million in North Arica. It was about to beat n in Black to beco the biggest movie of 1997.
"What the hell is this?" Zane said, looking at the newspaper with a smirk. "What's so great about n in Black's $250 million? The ship is going to hit $600 million in North Arica!"
He knew the truth. Titanic was special. No other movie (except for Avengers and Star Wars) would ever make that much money in North Arica.
Just as all of Arica was chanting, "The ship is great!", the movie opened in other countries, like England, France, and Germany.
At first, those countries didn't pay much attention.
But when the movie ca out and broke the all-ti opening day box office record in every single country... the filmmakers in those countries were completely stunned.
"Movies can be made... like this?!" many of them thought, shocked by how big and amazing Titanic was. They had never seen anything like it.
