Just as Zane Blackwood was about to answer Adriana, the scene in the movie Juno changed to show the Rowlings, the couple who wanted to adopt the baby.
On screen, Vanessa Rowling was carefully fixing her shirt cuffs. She adjusted a flower vase, straightened so photos, lit a nice-slling candle, and wiped down the railings. She wanted everything to be absolutely perfect.
She was so excited for Juno to arrive. She had always dread of being a mother.
Soon, Juno and her father arrived. With a lawyer there to help, the Rowlings promised to pay for all of Juno's dical bills and living costs. They wanted to adopt her baby, and they would do anything to help.
They made a deal.
Ti passed in the movie. Juno's belly grew bigger. Sotis, late at night, she could feel the baby's heartbeat.
Her parents were kind and understanding. Her friend Leah was always there for her. And the Rowlings were clearly desperate for a baby. Even though nothing "huge" happened, the story was full of quiet warmth and love.
In the theater, Jordan, the boss from Paramount, was impressed.
"Who directed this?" he whispered. "Oh! It's Richard Linklater! No wonder it's so good. He makes normal family life feel special."
Rhett, the representative from Warner Bros., was also impressed. "This movie handles tough topics really well," he murmured. "No other teen movie is this good."
He made a ntal note I need to tell my boss to buy the overseas rights for this movie.
He knew Wald Pictures wouldn't sell the whole copyright. The movie was too good. But getting the rights to show it in other countries would still make a lot of money.
The movie continued.
But suddenly, the story took a shocking turn!
Mark Rowling, the husband who was supposed to adopt the baby, told Juno he was leaving his wife.
"Yeah, I'm going to leave Vanessa," Mark said calmly.
"What? What did you say?" Juno was stunned.
"I found a place in the city," Mark explained slowly. "I've been planning this for a while. It's sothing I've wanted to do for a long ti."
Juno frowned. "No. You can't leave Vanessa."
"Why not?" Mark asked.
"Of course you can't!" Juno insisted. "If you leave her, how can you adopt my baby? I want him to have a complete family, not a broken one! Besides, once the baby is born, Vanessa will be so happy. She dreams of being a mother."
Mark shook his head and smiled a sad smile.
"Juno, listen," he said. "You're young. You don't understand the adult world. A baby isn't the center of my life. I'm not ready to be a father. And... I don't love Vanessa anymore. Marriage isn't what I need."
Juno was stunned.
Mark was a middle-aged man, but he acted like a teenager. He dressed like a kid and lived in a fantasy world. He was an "older guy" who had never really grown up.
Juno was furious. She wanted to leave.
But just then, Vanessa walked in, carrying shopping bags.
"Hi, Juno!" she said happily.
Vanessa had spent months buying baby clothes and toys. She was so ready to be a mom.
But then reality hit her hard.
"Vanessa," Mark said seriously, "I've been thinking... is it really the right ti for us to adopt a baby?"
"What are you talking about?" Vanessa asked. She knew what he ant, but she didn't want to believe it.
Mark shrugged. "I'm just wondering if we're ready to be parents."
"Mark!" Vanessa said quickly, trying to save the situation. "We are ready! Really! I've been taking parenting classes, and the nursery is perfect!"
"Vanessa—!" Mark interrupted her. "I know you're ready. But I'm not. This happened so fast. We only put the ad out two weeks ago! I thought it would take longer. But Juno was on our sofa in two weeks! This baby is like a ticking clock. It's ruining my quiet life! Do you understand?"
Mark didn't want a child. He didn't want to be a father.
"Mark," Vanessa said, looking right at him, "did you know? Your shirt is very childish. You're an adult. If I wait for you to beco a 'rock star,' I'll never be a mother."
"I never said I'd be a good father," Mark replied simply, as if he was talking about the weather.
Juno was angry and upset. She stord out of the house. For the first ti, she saw how complicated and ssy the adult world really was. Her ideas about growing up were shattered.
Mark felt relieved. But Vanessa felt her world collapse. She sat on the stairs in despair, staring at nothing.
Juno went ho and talked to her dad. She was full of doubts about love and family.
"Listen, Juno," her dad said in a serious, loving voice. "You said it's not easy for two people to stay together, and you're right. I may not be perfect, but I've lived with your stepmom for ten years. And our life is happy."
"Here's what I think," he said. "The best thing you can do is find soone who loves you for who you are. Soone who thinks you're perfect whether you're happy, sad, or having a bad day. To that person, even your farts sll like perfu! That's the person you should stick with for life."
(A/N: Sorry you had to read that sentence! But if I had to suffer through it while translating, it's only fair you do too. Can't have you feeling left out. )
Juno felt emotional.
"Dad, I think I've found that person," she said, thinking of her boyfriend, Rick.
"Of course you have!" her dad smiled. "And is that person's na D-A-D? I will always love you and support you! No matter what trouble you're in, I will love you just the sa!"
The movie was ending.
Juno, with her family by her side, gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
But she still gave him up for adoption.
"I don't think he belongs to ," Juno said. "I think he belongs to her—Vanessa."
Juno was still a kid in high school. She couldn't raise a baby. But Vanessa... Vanessa's dream was to be a mother, even without Mark.
The movie ended with a sweet scene of Juno and Rick playing guitar together.
The whole theater burst into applause!
The girls in the audience were especially moved. Many of them were crying happy tears.
Zane Blackwood watched them and thought, "Maybe Arica will see a few more teenage mothers this year. I feel a little guilty about that."
