February 10, 1997. 8:00 PM.

The television screen flickered, casting a blue glow across millions of living rooms.

SpongeBob SquarePants. Episode 9.

Eight million pairs of eyes were glued to the screen. The sponge wasn't just a cartoon anymore; he was a cultural anchor. But as the episode faded to black, the credits didn't roll. Instead, the yellow sponge popped back up, looking straight at the cara.

"The world is full of wonders!" SpongeBob's distinctive laugh echoed. "Do you want to et the most eccentric, extraordinary people in Arica?"

The screen cut to a montage—fast cuts of jugglers, fire-breathers, singers belting out high notes, and dancers defying gravity.

"If so, stay tuned to UPN! Arica's Got Talent premieres May 15th! No age limits. No race limits. Just talent."

Then, the hook that stopped hearts across the nation dropped.

"The Champion takes ho... One. Million. Dollars."

Boom.

In 1997, a million dollars wasn't just money. It was a life-altering, quit-your-job, buy-a-mansion fantasy.

Zane watched the broadcast from his office, leaning back in his chair. He'd looked into Arican Idol, sure. But the BBC wanted $60 million for the rights? Please. That was robbery.

'Let them keep their Pop Idol,' Zane thought, a smirk tugging at his lips. 'Seriously? Sixty million? For what? A karaoke contest? I'll build my own empire. And I'll do it with the freaks, the geeks, and the hidden gems.'

Texas. The Next Morning.

Seventeen-year-old Beyoncé Knowles stared at her reflection in the mirror. She adjusted the strap of her guitar, her fingers calloused from practice.

'Another day, another town square,' she thought, letting out a heavy sigh. 'Singing for loose change and polite applause. Is this it? Is this really destiny? Because right now, destiny feels a lot like dust and sweat. Maybe I should just apply at the mall.'

The phone rang, shattering the silence.

"Hello?"

"Bey! Don't you dare leave that house!" Kelly Rowland's voice was a shriek of pure adrenaline.

Beyoncé frowned, pulling the phone away from her ear. "Kelly? I have to go perform. I'm already late—"

"Perform? For who? The pigeons?" Kelly cut her off, breathless. "You haven't heard? Arica's Got Talent. UPN. One million dollars, Bey. One. Million."

Click.

Beyoncé stared at the receiver. 'A million?' Her heart hamred against her ribs, a frantic, bird-like rhythm.

Ten minutes later, the door burst open. Kelly, LaTavia, and LeToya tumbled in, a whirlwind of energy and desperation. They were "Destiny's Child," a group trying to rise from the ashes of a failed record deal.

"It's real," Kelly panted, slamming a newspaper onto the table. "Any talent. Any age. If we win... we don't just get famous. We get free."

Beyoncé looked at the ad. The bold letters seed to jump off the page.

'This is it,' she realized, a shiver chasing the heat down her spine. 'No more street corners. No more begging for attention. No more "almost made it."'

"Pack your bags," Beyoncé said, her voice trembling just a little. "We're going to sign up."

Missouri.

The wind cut through the thin hoodie of a 25-year-old man sitting on a rusted roadside railing. Marshall Mathers—Eminem—stared at the cracked pavent.

He was broke. His first album? A flop. Less than a thousand copies sold. The industry gatekeepers had laughed him out of the room.

'White boys can't rap,' he mocked himself internally, his teeth grinding together. 'That's what they say. Maybe they're right. Maybe I'm just a joke. A broke, angry joke with a daughter to feed and nothing in my pockets but lint and rage.'

He kicked a pebble into the street. He was tired. Tired of the hustle, tired of the hunger in his gut that felt like a permanent resident.

Whoosh.

A gust of wind tore through the street, ripping a newspaper from a nearby stand. It tumbled through the air, slapping wetly against Eminem's chest.

"Seriously?" he snapped, snatching the paper. "Even the trash is attacking now? Great. Just great."

He raised his hand to crumple it, to shred it into confetti, when the headline caught his eye.

ARICA'S GOT TALENT. ONE MILLION DOLLAR PRIZE.

His hand froze.

He read it. Then he read it again.

'A stage,' he thought, his blue eyes narrowing. 'No record execs telling no. No radio hosts hanging up on . Just a mic. And an audience. They can't ignore if I'm screaming in their living rooms.'

A slow, dangerous grin spread across his face. It wasn't a happy smile; it was the smile of a wolf realizing the cage door was open.

"This is my ticket," he muttered, crumpling the paper in his fist, not in anger, but in determination. "I'm going to make them listen. Every single one of them."

The Aftermath

Within five days, the UPN mailroom was a disaster zone.

Five thousand applications.

Singers, dancers, ventriloquists, and people with talents that didn't even have nas yet. They poured in from New York, Nevada, Canada. The dream of a million dollars had set the country on fire.

Zane sat in his office, watching the numbers climb. He didn't know about Beyoncé or Eminem yet. He didn't know he had just baited the hook for two of the biggest future stars on the planet.

He just looked at the stack of applications and smiled.

"Showti," he whispered.

But as the applications piled up, a new problem was brewing. With this many people, the logistics were going to be a nightmare. And Zane realized he had forgotten one crucial detail.

He stared at the paperwork, his fingers tapping a rhythmic beat on the mahogany desk.

'Wait. Who the hell is going to judge all these guys?'
