Chapter 320. Dawn

Why did Brooklyn suddenly explode at that ti?

A long while later, Enzo, like soone trying to calm down a drunk—though honestly, he never imagined he'd be the one in that position—clung to his coworker and barely managed to stop the outbreak of violence. It was only after things had finally cald down that he cautiously asked the reason. And then, the woman with a sophisticated appearance—despite having just turned soone into a bloody ss with her barbaric actions—explained.

"You should know when to stop."

In truth, she confessed that she hadn't liked a single thing about her new colleague since the very beginning—since the upper managent assigned him to her. She was from a mountain village and fundantally preferred peace and quiet. So when she had to suddenly work in tandem with soone else after being used to working alone, it imdiately made her uncomfortable. On top of that, she was already irritated from being overworked for too little pay. And to make matters worse, so guy had recently started ssaging her outside of work hours.

"What? So, just to be clear—you beat up just because you were annoyed that I talked to you?"

"Of course."

"Then just say you don't like it—say sothing! If you had just said one word, I wouldn't have kept approaching like that. And what was with all the smiling lately, then?"

"Uhm?"

"Normally, people don't smile wide enough to show all their teeth in front of soone they don't like!"

A hunter with sleek, shiny short hair—markedly different from soone else's brittle dyed locks—casually rubbed the bloodstained knuckle of a fist against their pants and smiled brightly once again.

"You are talking about this? Obviously, that was just for social life."

It was a scene that felt strange in many ways. Currently, the dominant personality inside her was a witty character nad Brooklyn Morgan. But even so, the amount of social interaction she had experienced since birth was overwhelmingly lacking, leaving her total social skills below average.

"Huh."

The Arican S-class healer is eccentric. Her unique upbringing left her no choice but to be this way. So disputes that others would have settled long ago through words were instead held back within so unknowable threshold, only to unexpectedly explode at unforeseen monts.

"Hehe."

Enzo was utterly shocked. To be honest, it was the first ti in his life he had ever misjudged the distance between himself and another person this badly.

"Not only was I not liked, but I was completely hated..."

But the shocking news hadn't even all co out yet.

"Anyway, I'm already married. So don't ever ask to go dancing with you privately again. I even showed you this—how could you possibly mistake for being single?"

"What?!"

Right after that, Brooklyn showed the ring she always wore to the other person. Pointing to the ring, she revealed that she was married—but at that mont, one of Spectrum's teammates pointed out once again what was wrong.

"You've always worn that ring on your middle finger."

"I've lost quite a bit of weight over the years. Now it feels loose if I wear it on my ring finger."

"I an, still—how could you wear a wedding ring like that..."

When soone deviates from social norms little by little like that, of course it's hard to get a clear read on them. But seriously—if her weight changed that much over the years, wouldn't it make more sense to just go and get the ring resized instead of doing that?

"It's so tiringly peculiar."

By talking with her a bit more, Enzo was able to gather a few additional pieces of information.

Brooklyn Morgan was indeed married, but it turns out she had already lost her husband.

"Then maybe it's worth a try, isn't it?"

With that in mind, Enzo considered continuing the mission—especially since it ca with a year-end bonus. But of course, the outco was ridiculously disastrous. And Brooklyn Morgan would never feel any closeness toward him for the rest of her life.

The main reason she decided to get married in the mountains—of all things—was simply because she liked her husband's eyes. Despite being more appearance-focused than anyone else, Brooklyn never showed interest in any attractive person who ca her way. One year, even a famous British actor who had fallen for her through a TV screen made bold attempts to court her. And even by Enzo's standards, that actor was an astonishingly handso man. Yet there was only one awakened individual who remained completely indifferent to it all.

"Hey, Brooklyn. Still, with a guy that handso, wouldn't it be worth giving him a chance—just once, even if it's just to see what happens?"

"Mhm?"

"To be honest, there's nothing better for killing ti than dating. From what I've seen, when you're free, you just ss around playing free pinball."

In a world where divorce and remarriage have beco so common, there's nothing wrong with trying to find soone new.

"Hmm..."

Could she really be that young and still plan to spend the rest of her life without ever forming another bond? If so, considering how much ti she likely has left, isn't that an incredibly hollow and wasteful choice? At this point, Enzo stopped thinking about the mission assigned by his superior—and instead, for the first ti, genuinely asked her how she truly felt.

But at that mont, what Brooklyn Morgan said in response—almost casually—ended up lingering in his mind for a very long ti.

"Are you saying that not being able to forget the dead and choosing to isolate myself is a waste of life?"

It was an unusually long ti.

"It's okay, Enzo. After all, wasting ti can be kind of fun."

Well, true. If that's what brings her happiness, then there's really no solid reason to try and stop her.

.

.

.

"Brooklyn!"

Ti passed once again. After several months, a baseline level of respect had finally ford between the two S-class hunters. The biggest reason for that was the power Enzo had recently demonstrated on the battlefield. Upon witnessing his abilities for the first ti, Brooklyn realized he was a fairly equal match—and for the first ti, she dropped her dismissive attitude.

"Brooklyn. Are you ready? We need to start moving soon."

"This is awful. Why on earth do we have to bother with so other guild's founding anniversary event? And on top of that, I've been stuck with the annoying task of gathering as much info on the awakened as possible—"

The two were partnered by the company, so they usually attended public events together. The only issue was that Enzo had signed his contract under far more relaxed terms than other S-ranks hunters—which ant he handled most of his duties in a rather half-hearted, sloppy way.

"Oh, right. Now that I think about it, I'm late in telling you this. Brooklyn, you might have to go on an overseas business trip soti next year."

"What kind of nonsense are you talking about?"

"I heard that China is secretly preparing a superpower fighting arena right now."

"It wouldn't be a secret if you knew about it."

"They say the prize used as bait there is [Traiana]. According to the asurents, it's a pretty good artifact that boosts skill power by a whopping 25%! You've been having a lot of concerns about healing efficiency lately, haven't you?"

A short chat flows.

"I an, knowing our Spectrum master, he's probably going to send agents to that event just to uphold national pride again anyway."

"Us?"

"No, just one person. Since it's a pretty powerful rival country, they can't simply block the event outright anymore. And if the U.S. just skips out on this international event, it wouldn't look good diplomatically."

"Hmm."

"If you're going to end up attending the event anyway, might as well go and snag an Epic or two while you're at it. I'll talk to the guild master and try to make sure the artifact gets bound to you."

"So annoying."

"Hoho, is that so?"

"I'd rather sothing like [Nuckelavee] just rampaged again. Then all these nations would imdiately stop their pathetic power struggles."

"Oh, that line just now? That was peak aggressive pacifist energy."

Anyway, after one bout of violence, Enzo managed to get along with her reasonably well as a workplace colleague.

[[Breaking News] Beast Reappears Near Europe Once Again...]

At least that was the case until this article ca out.

[DENMARK BEAST TALKS O LIVE NEWS]

The Beast, which had only been spotted sporadically since the Nuckelavee incident, was suddenly becoming active again. It was an anomaly that began from a certain point in ti—and no one knew why.

For reference, the fact that Brooklyn Morgan was a true dual-attribute user was still a secret known only to one alien agent and a certain Hunter who possessed such annoying powers that this monstrous water-attribute awakened person—ricate—so at the ti, there wasn't a shred of evidence.

But.

"_ _"

Strangely enough, even back then—when Enzo knew almost nothing—he had a vague sense of the Beast's true identity.

"Sohow."

He didn't know why, but sohow, she reminded him—at the most fundantal level—

of himself.

It was because she showed a hint of disgust—simply for the fact that she had awakened.

And as if to confirm that his instincts weren't wrong, not long after, one of Spectrum's top hunters went missing—and the Beast sightings abruptly stopped. Brooklyn, had died.

"_ _"

In truth, Enzo had been assigned to her team partly to monitor that unusually temperantal S-class hunter. He had been constantly reporting her every move to their employer—and thanks to that ongoing surveillance, by the end of the incident, he finally uncovered concrete evidence. Brooklyn was the Beast.

And just a few days after revealing the Beast's true identity to the higher-ups, Enzo found himself able to ask those still living employers over the communication line.

[Enzo: Who was Morgan taken out by?]

[Youth: Most likely Hanbok Warrior -C]

As I said, I checked it out—the awakened who entered through the Henan Province space stuck together the entire ti they were there.

But none of them even crossed paths with Morgan.]

[Enzo: You an Gim and Jung, the Koreans, right?]

[Youth: That's right]

Despite the inconvenience of his large fra causing him to press two keys at once, the towering man moved his fingers diligently across the keyboard, typing out the following ssage on the dark web ssenger.

[Enzo: Then, before the upcoming ritual begins, please designate one person to lure to India and handle—make it Kang Changho.]

Well. The top two Koreans are always busy with official schedules, which it nearly impossible to snatch them away. That naturally leaves very few options remaining, though...

[SPECTRUM: Is there any particular reason we need to keep Kim Giryeo in the country?]

He didn't know. Honestly, even Enzo himself couldn't understand why that kind of request had co from his own fingers. Brooklyn Morgan had been just a colleague—soone he'd worked alongside for maybe a year at most. And I like most professional relationships, if anything, theirs leaned more toward strained than sentintal.

"She was an annoying awakened."

No—let's correct that. Enzo disliked Brooklyn with about 90% of his heart. After losing her husband and growing generally bored with life, she had thrown herself into her new assignnt—the orders given by Spectrum Inc.—with surprising dedication. So much so, that, to her colleagues, her level of loyalty often seed excessive, even pointless.

"If one person raises the expectations that high, it ends up dragging along to match them too!"

It had been strictly a professional relationship. Looking back, she'd even been a bit uncomfortable to be around. So choosing to spend ti on the death of soone like that—it was, by all accounts, a profoundly aningless act.

Yeah. Maybe, just like that superpower once said—

‘It’s okay, Enzo. After all, wasting ti can be kind of fun.’

A life now left with nothing but drunkenness and hangovers. At this point, even if he indulges a little and starts losing ti, would anyone really notice anyway...

***

Clank.

The perspective now returns to the heart of Korea. The individual, who had montarily indulged in a flashback, refocused on the current situation. In truth, one of Spectrum's psychics was deeply connected to Beast during his lifeti in many ways. That's why he had even personally volunteered for the operation targeting Korea to uncover the truth behind Brooklyn's death, but...

[33.45kw]

"What is this?"

How could a supposed suspect in the Beast's murder possess such pathetic, insect-level magic? Even thinking back on it now—it was absolutely absurd.

"Are you a fraud or sothing?"

The foreign awakened, wearing the mask of the dead, quickly beca certain. Then, convinced that the other had deceived the entire world with such ager talent, he began to relentlessly pressure and corner him.

Zhan of China—a powerful psychic capable of drawing up entire underground water veins and wielding them like limbs—made his abilities for the first ti. Those who had already irritated him from being overworked for too little pay.

During the event in China, Zhan had found a certain formidable opponent to deal with—

specifically because of a power-type mismatch. The most notable trait of electricity-based psychics was their lightning-fast skill activation. And this particular hunter, who mimicked beasts, had been close enough to Brooklyn—an Arican, not a Japanese lightning-user—to rember her almost like a [Doppelganger]. That alone spoke volus.

All the information pointed to one person. The true identity of the Beast now standing in Kim Giryeo's way—was soone other than Spectrum's new apex. Hunter Enzo Chiano.

"A guy with an awakening level of just 33 managed to kill the Beast?"

"N no, it's not like that. I actually did see Miss Morgan in the Mimic City, but..."

"Co to think of it, even now—trapped in a cage like this—you're not putting up any resistance at all. That just confirms it even more. You're a total fraud!"

And in that mont, the archmage also recalled that the opponent was the rough sorcerer he had t at the Arican Gate Star party.

"W, what was his na again... sothing with "Cho"? Anyway, it definitely had that kind of sound in it."

So Enzo was the one wearing the bone mask?! That ant things just got a little easier to figure out. The opponent was slowly under the illusion that his identity was still well hidden behind that item.

"Let's play dirty! There's really no other way."

You foolish beast. The truth is—I already figured out who you were through so background digging. But the reason I didn't expose you and still ca all the way to this dungeon without resistance...was because I wondered—just maybe—your goal might align with my beliefs.

"_Maybe I'll test the waters around this timing? Honestly, no matter how outlandish the goal, pretending to agree for a mont should be easy enough."

In his desperation to buy ti, Giryeo tried to lead the conversation in a positive direction. But the problem was...

"—That soone with such pitiful talent has been posing as an S-rank at all this ti."

It was the fact that Hunter Enzo's judgnt was even quicker than his lightning-based attribute.

"If that's the case, then 'precisely because of that,' he's even more dangerous. Anyway, since it's confird that Brooklyn t the Korean team, we should take care of this beforehand..."

Clank.

Enzo, the S-class hunter who had transford into a woman with long, lithe arms, raised and threw the tal spear again.

Since it was a weapon brought out for combat against an S-class opponent, the spear's main ability was simple and singular.

[Defense Penetration]

Enzo hurled the spear straight at his target's head. In a world where magic and miracles were real, he believed that even soone with a re 33.4 awakening level could still be struck down from behind.

"That crazy grizzly bear of a bastard!"

Gahh!

Trapped in the red snare, Giryeo sensed the attack with a true mage's intuition and managed to dodge. Yet, despite clearly avoiding the spear, he still suffered massive damage. There was no need to rely solely on the defense penetration to explain it.

"Damn."

Enzo had gathered all the mana he could and wrapped his skill around the tal spear. Apparently, even dungeon-forged tal was no exception when it ca to roaming surface electrons. As the spear—charged with the lightning of an S-class Hunter—ripped through the air,

just brushing against it was enough to shatter what remained of Giryeo's [Protection].

Bzzzt.

At the sa ti, the skin near the blond man's left ear sizzled and smoked as if burning instantly.
