Chapter 350. Bunker (4)

With that, my business was finished. After a long stretch of threats, I successfully bound him with the newly revised [X ight's Oath].

From now on, Andy Oliver would serve as a loyal subordinate to the alien—committing no wrongs, and keeping a clean conscience in full compliance with the law.

'Of course, in the restriction about not harming people, I made an exception for its forr bosses.'

He must take down the organization he founded himself. And he must keep my secret. That's the end of it.

'Hmm.'

Besides, even if problems arise because of the Youth Guild—the only loophole in this contract—I now have the power to stop it.

'From now on, I really won't bother much about what's going on with Earth. I just need Korea, where I'll be living from now on, to quiet down a bit.'

The imdiate concern was over.

"Andy Oliver. Then this is my last question for you."

"Ah, yes. Yes..."

"The company called Pixy... maybe because their technology is so good, there are occasional rumors like this."

"Yes?"

"Your company... do you really torture aliens to make your translators?"

If that's the case, then all that's left is to satisfy the few lingering, final questions.

"Ah, no. Ha... I understand in what sense you ant that as a joke. But the only reason Pixy gets that kind of rumor is s imply because I worked hard."

"So it was just that you were technically talented."

"If it were as easy as dissecting an alien, sure, we've done that right away. But developnt is such a hard and tedious job."

'Thud!'

'Aagh! Why...?'

At least all my questions about Andy Oliver were answered. So I left the mammal whose jaw had been knocked askew from a slap where it was, and then calmly headed back toward the entrance.

.

.

.

But to think I'd co back only to be greeted by a scene like this.

'Ugh.'

A crowd of people lay collapsed, and in the middle of them stood a hunter, drenched in blood.

"Hunter Kang..."

No. Co to think of it, I definitely told him to run away at the right mont. So why on earth had that driver stayed pu t until he ended up like this?

"Have you been blocking the entrance this whole ti?"

"You told to."

"When did you change back, anyway?"

"Sohow, everyone ca charging at , calling my na. I figured my identity had been exposed anyway, so I just released it. It's uncomfortable to move around like that, you know."

Tuk, tuk.

The bodily fluid that maintained hoostasis usually beca nothing more than filth once it was outside the body. Ka ng Changho, looking the complete opposite of his usual hair color, made a casual gesture. In that state, he explained t hat he had done his very best to keep anyone from getting out of here. And indeed, his efforts were plain to see, even with the naked eye.

"Well, this is impressive in its own way."

Though my intervention in the middle let so Awakened escape, it seed he had still fought an intense battle with s uperhumans in that short ti. Surprisingly, none of the blood he was covered in was his own.

"I tried to subdue them without causing too much harm, but there were just so many of them. If not for that, I wouldn't have accidentally torn any arteries."

"Ah... so this was their blood."

"Anyway, good thing I brought potions."

To think he'd tried to keep his promise until he got that filthy. I felt a mix of emotions as I looked at the mammal in such a ss.

'I just gave him a simple job to keep him far away... but seeing him in this state, honestly, it's kind of pitiful.'

So, while my conscience was pricking hard...

"Hunter Kang Changho. But I've got sothing I'm curious about..."

"What?"

"While talking with the owner here, a few things ca up..."

Given the circumstances, it's all about the business.

"Just in case, are you from the Youth Guild?"

I gathered my resolve and asked him a question. Just in case, I also focused on sensing his flow of mana. But the ans wer that ca was so simple, it was almost defeating.

"?"

"?"

"Are you from the Youth Guild?"

"No. That's not it, Youth."

"What the heck is with this guy?"

"Oh, Youth. That... place with a branch in Asia, and the one I chatted with those guys at."

"Yes, yes."

"I'm not sure how this question even ca up. But really, if you look at my usual schedule, isn't it obvious?"

"What?"

"I'm a freelance hunter."

Anyway, what am I even doing talking to soone like this? Even without using a sophisticated lie detector, I could be sure by now—Kang Changho was telling the truth with 100% certainty. Above all, his mana flow hadn't changed in the slightest.

"That ans there's no tension."

Besides, the fact that he knew about the chatroom's existence yet didn't know Youth's location—well, I'd already hear d a bit of an explanation for that even before coming to the U.S.

"This should be enough, right? Hunter Kim Giryeo asked to find out who had the final say in causing the Beast Inci dent. It's not like I can investigate every small fry involved. And it's not as if you can afford to wait several more years, either."

Then is the one I should really be suspicious of that underworld informant Kang Changho she'd hired?

'If that one's involved, tracking them down will be even harder. Even if they went through the trouble of learning how t o use the internet, they'd never answer if I asked where they live.'

Either way, this isn't a topic to discuss right now. It doesn't feel right to just leave soone standing there, covered he ad to toe in dirt and filth like that. Judging from the circumstances, it might be better to wait for Youth to get caught in a "net" Ga Galsd soday rather than comb through everything to find them now. Above all, I was impressed by how fi rmly he'd kept his promise. So, I decided to move up my return ho a little.

***

And I returned to my beloved Korea.

"..."

Rattle.

For the record, the person getting out of the car right now doesn't have blond hair, but blue. The two Koreans had finis hed their business and returned ho safely (albeit illegally). Now, all that was left was to take care of the alibi I had f abricated using the Gate, and everything would be over.

"How many people have co in so far?"

"There was none."

South Korea's third S-rank hunter, Kang Changho, imdiately closed the high-level Gate he had kept sealed in Gyeon gsangnam-do. After wrapping things up like that, he got into a car and drove off.

[05XX-XXXX]

An eight-digit number. It was a call from the Korea Hunter Association. The mont Kang Changho saw the number o n his phone, he ignored it without a second thought.

"Uhm?"

But his excuse of being in the middle of driving did nothing for him. Soon, near the Seoul tollgate where he arrived, a f amiliar hunter stopped him.

"Hunter Kang Changho!"

And Jung Haseong, ranked number one, was here.

'Looks like he knew I'd be passing through here and was waiting for .'

For the record, he was in a high-end foreign car, but the other person—being an S-rank hunter as well—caught up to t he vehicle just by lightly running. With no other choice, Kang Changho pulls the car over to the side of the road.

"You jumped out near the crosswalk, so it's just barely not a traffic violation."

And in response to that trivial remark ca a single line from Jung Haseong, who looked almost in shock.

"First of all, I'd like to apologize for showing up so suddenly."

"Young people with good manners... Well, then I've no choice but to hear you out."

"It, but... I heard so news that was so shocking."

The conversation flowed on in a way that made his gentle attempt to guide it seem pointless.

"Hunter Kang Changho, I'm asking just to be sure, but... did you recently ask Hunter Kim for help in raiding a dungeon?"

Click.

The mixed-race man paused mid-motion, just as he was about to slip his sunglasses into his jacket pocket.

"What?"

"It's about the high-difficulty Gate raid you just finished today."

"Hmm."

"I got the news a bit late through the Association, but I heard you and Hunter Kim had been working on it for two whol e days."

"That's right."

Kang Changho kept his usual smiling expression. But the young man in his twenties, hailed as a national hero, spoke h esitantly, his face stiff and wary.

"I an, honestly, Hunter Kim Giryeo is so strong that it might be hard to believe... but still, he's soone who was jus t hospitalized right after dealing with the Beast and only just got discharged."

But who would've thought the reason he was so anxious was out of consideration for soone else?

"No matter how healthy a hunter might seem, I understand they need to rest for a while to recover from injuries. But th en I suddenly hear about a thing that I thought many tis before—this black-haired young man was, thankfully, a b it shocking."

It seed that Korea's number-one-ranked hunter had assud the raid on that Gate had been carried out at soon e's request. Of course, the reality was the complete opposite. Soone had just dragged their weary body all the way to the U.S. and back, and yet sohow, this kind of unfair misunderstanding had happened.

'That damn Awakened with tuberculosis. He's actually quite energetic for a dying human.'

But Kang Changho didn't bother voicing the complaints in his head. In fact, he tried to steer the conversation toward a s friendly an ending as possible. He'd thought it many tis before—this black-haired young man was, thankfully, the country's foremost guardian, the number-one contributor to its safety. If he could help it, Kang Changho had no desire to be at odds with the Awakened standing before him.

"The problem was that "if he could help it" kind of situation had been happening far too often lately."

So he wondered how he could explain things to smooth over this Gate alibi. And right about then, a good idea ca to him.

"Ah."

For the record, this only seed to be acceptable from his perspective.

'I can't exactly say I secretly went to the U.S. Well, fine. I an, really—what Awakener in this world would dislike bein g acknowledged as strong?'

This S-rank hunter decided to reuse an excuse he'd given before. And so, Kang Changho shalessly lied with t he truth as he replied.

"Jung Haseong, listen carefully. The reason I went into that dungeon this ti was..."

This was, in a way, no different from tossing a match into the otherwise calm waters of South Korea's dia.

"I was instructed by Hunter Kim Giryeo."

"Yes?"

"I had no say in it at all—if anything, it was him who took the lead from start to finish."

"Th, the dungeon raid...?"

"Because of various things that happened in the past, I can't go against that superhuman's word. Naturally. I an, if it were you, could you ignore such a scary and powerful hunter?"

"Of course."

"So don't misunderstand."

And yet, the superhuman who would actually set off the firestorm was soone else entirely.

"To put it bluntly, it's just Hunter Kim's lackey. I just do whatever he tells to do. So from now on, if you have any qu estions, go ask that Awakener directly."
