"Of course it’s a good offer, little fella," Grimshaw said encouragingly, and then turned to look at Bob with an expression of ’I told you so’. "Yet sothing entirely unexpected happened when I made that offer to the Crystal alligator. He just up and rejected the offer - almost as if it was offensive sohow."
Grimshaw shook his head, wearing a bewildered expression, as if he could not fathom why such a thing had happened.
"Although the alligator refused to elaborate on why it refused my perfectly reasonable offer to accept it as my slave, I did not take it to heart. If it’s ant to be, it’ll be. Yet I didn’t feel right about just giving up, either. So I requested the Crystal alligator to make a bet with . Since I made a request, he naturally obliged."
Tiny-Sparkles struggled to hold on to its rationality as he heard Grimshaw talk more and more. He was ashad to admit, but he had a feeling that if Grimshaw made a request of him, Tiny-Sparkles would find it impossible to reject.
If this was not compulsion, he was not sure what would count as compulsion. Yet, due to how his horn had evolved, Tiny-Sparkles knew that Grimshaw was purposefully trying to sway them at all. It was just as if it was inconceivable not to do what the pretty boy wanted.
"Perchance, would you elaborate on your request?" Bob asked, speaking with Grimshaw as if they were having the most normal conversation ever.
In fact, the only other person who Bob ca even slightly close to talking normally with was their captain, so to see the sa level of respect granted was a big shocker for everyone. Then again, there was no doubt that Grimshaw, whoever or whatever he was, was far from ordinary as one can be.
"Of course. I asked him to compete in the stadium. If he wins, then I will reward him with the opportunity to beco a servant rather than a slave. Naturally, he can still reject that proposal, it is completely up to him - I will not coerce him. If he loses, then he will have his freedom, and I will bury his corpse in a fine graveyard."
As he spoke, Grimshaw did not seem sadistic at all, nor did he seem like he was purposefully torturing the alligator, or putting it in a difficult situation. He seed to genuinely believe that he was being a stand-up guy, which is what made his actions so much more terrifying. That fact that almost no one seed to be able to resist him made it all that much worse.
Even the Jagged Stallion, who was supposed to be an agent working for the Artica race, seed to act subserviently towards him, from what the group saw.
They looked towards the centre of the stadium, and what they saw was not pretty. The Crystal alligator was fighting off countless enemies, and his crystallisation seed not as effective as it used to be. His own body was covered in nurous cracks, showing how much damage he had already taken. Clearly, the many advantages it had against mortals hadn’t fully translated yet now that he was an immortal. He probably didn’t even know the full capacity of his own abilities yet, and he was fighting for his life, literally.
Bob turned back and looked at Grimshaw, who was smiling politely, and spoke with a level tone.
"Grimshaw, as one who lacks all titles alongside your na, it is not surprising that you have indubitably made a grave mistake in your judgnt of this matter."
Grimshaw shifted slightly in his seat, both intrigued and amused by Bob’s statent.
"Oh? Please enlighten as to how I have made a mistake. It is not an experience I am familiar with."
Bob looked up into his eyes.
"The Crystal alligator is a part of our crew, and is legally bound to us up until a ti that he is relieved of his position, or until he formally resigns. Whether you make a request of him, or make a bet, or give him an offer, all of them are pointless because you cannot enter into a new, binding legal agreent with him."
Grimshaw showed an enlightened expression, as if he had realized his mistake.
"In that case, why don’t you just give permission to take him off your hands and allow him to leave your crew? Problem solved."
It was a simple question, but Tiny-Sparkles, the first mate, suddenly felt like he was unable to co up with a good reason to reject him. If he spoke, he would relieve the alligator of his position as a crew mber, so he did not speak at all. Despite whatever feelings that filled him, he understood what should and shouldn’t be done.
They had all co here in the mood for a confrontation, but the trouble they had found themselves in was beyond anything they could have expected, or even knew how to handle. For once, it seed that Bob had proved his ability to speak anywhere and everywhere useful. It was likely that without him, they would all have beco slaves.
The truth was, as the first of his race, and first of his na, a Mythical being that was worshiped as a Deity, Bob was extrely powerful, and special. It was just that most days, the crew did not realize it.
"It is not so simple to redy your mistakes, foolish child, for before you can begin to fix the issue, you must face our captain, and seek forgiveness for crossing his crew. Whether you acted knowingly or unknowingly, you have committed a sin by trying to poach a crew mber, and a greater sin by causing the Crystal alligator to co into harm’s way. Your penance will not be simple."
Instead of being offended by Bob’s words, Grimshaw only smiled even wider. He closed his eyes and took a deep whiff of the air, as if picking up on the subtlest of scents.
"Your captain, he is a fairy, is he not? One of the basest, lowest races in existence? Are you so sure... that he can stand in my presence, and not imdiately kneel from the sheer honor of such a thing?"
