"Let take over."

Rex climbed the hill—eyes fixed on the Special Voidal Knight as it sparked with its Spirit Genesis.

He could hear the Invincible Apparition’s voice beckoning him.

Every single sound was drowned—the hum of charging Spirit Genesis, the screams of the people, even the roar torn from Rex’s own throat—dulled, leaving only the rasping voice of the Invincible Apparition, beckoning him to change places.

No, you can’t take control now.

"And why is that? Rage and hate created . I can reach that thing in ti."

Rex’s pupils dilated as he dodged another lash from the star shard.

He tried climbing with all his might, but it was not enough, too slow to reach the Special Voidal Knight.

I need to do it on my own. I need to succeed on my own!

Hearing this, the Invincible Apparition smirked, but Rex couldn’t see it as its form wasn’t present.

It was still hiding within Rex’s mind.

"I thought we were over this. No matter how strong you beco, the end will be the sa. You’ll always fail. You can never protect those you hold dear. Not now, and not ever. You will fail to reach that thing like you failed to protect our parents and Edward."

No, you’re wrong!

"Wrong...? Then let today be your final lesson. If you fail to reach that serpent, you will fail to rescue Nivellen from death. Maybe then you will understand that you can never protect the people you love when it counts the most. Poor Nivellen... She will perish without leaving anything behind. All because you still think you’re capable."

This ti... This ti! I will succeed! I made the right choice by not letting her sacrifice herself for !

Splash!

Rex’s eyes shifted down as his eyes widened in shock.

No... This can’t be happening.

He made a misstep, slipping when he was about to make one final leap.

In the next second, he was thrown off balance and his body swung to the side.

As he fell, Rex looked up at the summit and saw the Special Voidal Knight had finished charging.

"NO!!"

Kaboom!!

Before the beam struck the summit—and obliterated the last of the Xintarin Bubble’s people, Rex turned away. His head dropped low, eyes wide in shock as he stared at the ground with trembling pupils, as he couldn’t believe he ca too late.

Despite giving it his all, he failed in the end.

Knowing what the price of failure would be, Rex still couldn’t succeed.

"Now, you see it the way I see it."

Beside him, the Invincible Apparition appeared, sitting on the sharp slope, facing skyward.

He wasn’t smiling; his face was blank, but there was a profound aning behind it.

"Half a million people died because you ca too late—because you failed to protect them in the end. Even if everything goes smoothly from here, which it likely won’t, Empress Morgana will still be under scrutiny, blad. She demanded nothing short of absolute success—from you. And since you couldn’t deliver, she won’t uphold her end of the deal."

Slowly, the Invincible Apparition turned towards Rex.

His eyes blazed with infernal fury.

"Do you know why you will always fail?"

Rex didn’t answer.

He even thinks of the answer, as he was too shaken up by his own failure.

"It’s because you allowed other emotions to deter you from your goals. Being in a perpetual state of anger and hate would grant you the success and result you desperately want. You show compassion to your enemies, and that led to your parents’ death. You valued friendship and allowed an option, and because of that, Edward is taken."

Hearing this, Rex grasped his head with his hands.

Each statent the Invincible Apparition made struck a vicious blow to his mind.

And rapidly, his psyche couldn’t take it anymore.

Not when the truth was brutally placed right in front of him like this.

"And now... without the Phoenix Feather, Nivellen dies."

Stop it.

"You will return to your pack crippled."

Stop it!

"And it will only be a matter of ti before everyone around you dies."

RAARGGH!!

Rex scread at the top of his lungs.

Despite knowing the price of failure, how his failure would lead to a chain of downspiral that would implicate those around him on a dark path which would end in death—he still couldn’t bring himself to succeed in this.

It was a devastating blow as his only reason for coming here was so that he could save everyone.

Mrs.Greene already warned him about the approaching catastrophe.

One that would decimate everyone, and he was the only one who could stop it.

For still being able to breathe and live in this world, there has to be a reason.

And this was the reason: to protect those around him.

He didn’t care what would happen to him, but at least the others would avoid danger.

But even with all of that, he still failed.

If I couldn’t save the people who mattered... then what’s the point of still being alive?

"It’s not your ti yet."

Rex’s breath halted when he heard these words.

It didn’t co from the Invincible Apparition, that was certain.

Nothing this sweet and calming could ever co from sothing as dark as the Invincible Apparition.

And Rex instantly recognized the voice—Mrs.Greene.

"I know it’s not my ti yet, Mom. I still have things to do, but this... I don’t know if I could."

Rex smiled bitterly, a flicker of self-pity in his eyes as even with the System’s help and how strong he currently was, clawing his way from nothing to this height of power, he had still failed to protect those he loved.

Still failed to give them the peace they deserved.

Just like what the Invincible Apparition said, he always failed when it mattered the most.

He was a failure.

"You’ve done better than anyone could, my sweet boy. Don’t let anyone say otherwise."

Her voice rang again, assuring Rex that he was no failure.

"No, I hadn’t. Placed anyone other than , and they’ll probably do better than ," Rex said, sighing deeply as his shoulders slumped. "It doesn’t matter anyway. Now, Haxel won. Empress Morgana will be in trouble. And I will not get the Phoenix Feather. It’s over."

"It’s not over."

"Yes, it is. I failed this path, and now I have to find another way."

"Look up, my sweet child."

Rex didn’t answer, but his head still hung low—dejected from his absolute failure.

He didn’t want to do anything, at least not in that mont.

Just then, Mrs.Greene’s voice rang once again.

"Look up."

As soon as she said that, Rex blinked his eyes, and the surroundings suddenly changed.

He blinked several tis more, each flutter of his lashes peeling away the fog that clung to his vision.

Slowly, the world ca into focus, sharp and disorienting.

A nauseating warmth clung to his hands, and as his gaze dropped, his breath caught.

Rex was kneeling on top of sothing wet and mangled.

He was confused as to what it was for a few seconds before the scent coming from it imdiately told him what it was. Flesh. Rex was kneeling on top of a pile of flesh, his blood-slicked hands trembling above the grotesque remains.

Both his brows drew tight as the pieces clicked into place.

It was the Special Voidal Knight, or what was left of it.

Sohow, Rex was now kneeling on top of the carcass of the Special Voidal Knight.

It lay beneath him in ruin, as if torn apart by sothing primal, sothing unrestrained.

And he was the one straddling its broken form, its remnants soaked into his skin.

What happened? Did I kill this serpent?

Other than that, he was also human again—he had reverted back, replacing his monstrous Werewolf form with his Human form. No claws, no monstrous canine. Just a pounding heart, heaving lungs, and a body that ached as if it had fought through death itself.

Swoosh...

A whistle of wind surged around him, cold and cutting.

Rex finally turned, the summit’s silhouette now unmistakable.

Sohow, he was now at the top of the hill, which explained the cold wind.

How did I get here? I don’t rember moving at all.

Rex rembered slipping and falling earlier, right before he made his one last leap.

Since the Special Voidal Knight had already charged its Spirit Genesis to full, the entire hilltop should not exist by now, wiped completely by the beam. But sohow, it was intact—and Rex was now kneeling on it.

What in the world happened? I don’t understand.

Rex’s mind reeled. Blank. In disarray.

Just then, when his confusion reached its highest, he noticed a shadow shrouding him.

At that mont, Rex recalled what Mrs.Greene said earlier and slowly looked up.

A woman stood before him.

She was clad in glinting armor, her expression unreadable—composed and cold as ever.

Despite looming over him, the woman didn’t speak, nor did she smile.

But she extended her hand toward him, steady and silent, offering to help Rex stand up.

Rex stared at her and then at the outstretched hand and then back at her.

He was uncertain whether she was real or just another echo of his mind playing tricks on him.

"Davina...?" Rex muttered in disbelief.

"Stand up," She said sternly, voice as cold as ice. "You look pathetic right now."

Upon hearing this, Rex accepted her hand and stood up.

He looked around the place—and saw that the remaining people of the Xintarin Bubble were still alive, the hilltop and all buildings on it were still intact, and the Special Voidal Knight was dead. It all felt too surreal for him.

Rex tried checking the notification log and found no notification of him killing the serpent.

It wasn’t him who killed the Special Voidal Knight.

Of course, he might’ve helped unconsciously, but it wasn’t he who killed the serpent.

Naturally, Rex looked at Davina, his index finger pointing at her hesitantly.

"Did you..."

"You blacked out, didn’t you? Yes, I ca back to help."

"You ca back to help?"

Rex looked at Princess Davina incredulously.

Considering that she was the one who partially made it harder for him to rescue the Xintarin Bubble, it was surreal—that he even decided to co back to help. She wanted him to fail, and yet, here she was, aiding him take down the Special Voidal Knight.

"Do not misunderstand," Princess Davina said coolly, arms folded over her chest as she turned her back to him. "I didn’t return because of you. I ca back because I know how reckless you can be if you did not get what you wanted, and I refuse to let you tarnish my na with your foolishness."

Upon hearing this, Rex laughed heartily.

A laugh that surprised Davina, as she had never heard him laugh like this.

She pivoted her body to look at him.

"What’s so funny?" She asked, clearly annoyed.

But Rex didn’t heed her mood and looked at her, "Thank you. Thank you for helping."

Princess Davina was surprised when she heard this; her eyes widened as she wasn’t expecting that.

Accompanying Rex for so ti already, she knew that he was a tough person.

A man who didn’t waver in front of anything and knew what he wanted.

Soone like that was certainly too proud and headstrong to thank soone like this.

So hearing Rex thanked her shook sothing inside her.

"I... I..." she faltered, but swiftly composed herself and turned away once more. "As I said, I didn’t do it for you—I did it for my own reasons. Still... for soone as uncivilized as you, it’s reassuring to see you possess at least enough grace to thank those who aid you."

Princess Davina paused.

A knot was building inside her chest.

"But you shouldn’t thank since I’m the one who started this. It’s all my fault." She confessed.

Upon hearing this, Rex tilted his head in confusion.

"All your fault?"

"Yes, I pulled this single Special Voidal Knight towards this bubble."

"What...?"

Rex stared at her in disbelief as he initially thought this was still Haxel’s doing.

He didn’t expect Princess Davina to be the one responsible for this single rogue serpent.

"I’m going to take my thank you back. You don’t deserve it..."
