Sterling broke through with lightning speed, darting down the flank like a bolt of electricity.
For Aston Villa, the player tasked with marking Sterling was Alan Hutton.
The veteran full-back was not known for his pace, and in this one-on-one duel, he was utterly outmatched.
In the blink of an eye, Sterling had already gained half a yard. Without hesitation, he whipped in a left-footed cross.
The ball flew dangerously toward the goalmouth.
At the crucial mont, Villa center-back Tommy Elphick stretched out a leg, sending the ball out over the byline to clear the imdiate danger.
Aston Villa's defense was struggling to cope with Manchester City's star power. In that one-on-one battle on the flank, Hutton had given his all just to chase Sterling's shadow.
He was powerless to intervene.
It was a display of superior skill.
"Corner kick to Manchester City," Martin Tyler announced on the Sky Sports broadcast. "We can clearly see City's two center-backs, Otandi and Laporte, charging into the Villa penalty area, ready to contest the header. A mont of truth for the Aston Villa defense."
A few seconds later, Bernardo Silva delivered the out-swinging corner.
Thump.
The ball swung toward the near post.
Gabriel Jesus attacked the space, leaping into the air. However, just as the Brazilian forward rose, Elphick applied heavy pressure from behind, disrupting his effort.
The taller Villa defender managed to get his head to it first, clearing the ball toward the midfield.
Coincidentally, it fell right into the path of Theodore Bjorn.
"Theodore Bjorn controls the ball," Tyler called out, his voice rising in anticipation. "This is a golden opportunity for Aston Villa to counter."
In the stands of Villa Park, the ho fans rose to their feet.
All eyes were fixed on the 17-year-old.
To be honest, Theodore hadn't expected the ball to land right in front of him.
Fortunately, his reaction ti was elite.
After bringing the ball under his spell, he turned sharply with his first touch, just as City's defensive midfielder, Fabian Delph, slid in with a desperate tackle.
At this mont, most of Manchester City's players were inside the Villa penalty area from the corner, including Otandi, Laporte, and Gündoğan.
anwhile, Bernardo Silva was still out by the corner flag. Manchester City's midfield was wide open.
As the deepest-lying midfielder, Delph had to stop the counter at all costs.
But he underestimated the teenager's reflexes.
With a gentle tap of his right foot, Theodore evaded Delph's sliding challenge, leaving the City player stranded on the turf.
"Theodore Bjorn skips away from Delph!" Tyler shouted.
Gary Neville leaned closer to his monitor, watching the play develop.
In the stands, the Villa fans erupted into wild cheers as they saw their young star leave an England international in the dust.
His na echoed around the stadium.
On the Manchester City bench, Pep Guardiola, who had been lounging with his legs crossed, imdiately sprang up and rushed to the edge of his technical area.
Just as he was about to scream at his retreating players to recover, Theodore delivered another surprise.
Boom!
Theodore didn't choose to dribble into the open space. Instead, he looked up and imdiately picked a pass.
He noticed that only two full-backs, Benjamin ndy and Danilo, remained in City's half.
anwhile, Tammy Abraham and Jack Grealish were already on their bikes, making aggressive runs.
It was a 2v2 counter-attack!
Without wasting a second, Theodore launched a raking long pass.
The ball dropped perfectly at Grealish's feet on the left flank.
"Grealish has it now," Tyler comntated. "Danilo has closed him down. Can the Villa captain find a way past?"
Grealish pushed the ball forward with his left foot, trying to use a burst of pace to shake off Danilo.
But the Brazilian's defensive experience showed, he gave Grealish no opening, sticking to him like glue.
Seeing no clear path down the line, Grealish suddenly chopped the ball back onto his right foot, cutting inside.
Even so, he couldn't imdiately shake off Danilo, who tracked the movent perfectly, staying square to block any shooting angle.
Grealish seed to have run out of options.
Just as the attack looked to be stalling, Theodore sprinted forward at full speed, arriving late to support the play.
Without hesitation, Grealish laid the ball off to Theodore, who was charging into the center of the pitch.
Although Delph had busted a gut to track back, he was still a step behind.
If Theodore pulled the trigger now, Delph wouldn't have ti to block it.
Sensing the danger, Danilo made a split-second decision.
He abandoned Grealish and aggressively closed down Theodore to limit his shooting space.
City's defensive coordination was on full display.
However, Theodore never intended to shoot. Earlier in the match, he had tested Claudio Bravo from distance, and the Chilean keeper had made a spectacular save.
Learning from that, Theodore decided to play to his strengths!
Boom!
Taking the ball in stride with his right foot, he imdiately clipped a delicate lofted pass into the box toward Tammy Abraham.
Danilo threw a leg out to intercept, but he was a fraction too late.
The ball floated into the Manchester City penalty area.
On the left side of the box, Abraham held off Benjamin ndy with his back to goal.
The striker stood at 195cm, while ndy was 185cm.
Moreover, Theodore's pass landed with pinpoint accuracy, dropping right onto Abraham's laces.
ndy couldn't get near the ball.
Abraham brought it down, rolled ndy with a drop of the shoulder and unleashed a ferocious strike with his right foot.
The Villa fans behind the goal were already out of their seats, ready to celebrate what looked like a certain goal.
But standing on the City goal line was a veteran keeper.
At the crucial mont, Claudio Bravo stepped up.
Reacting purely on instinct, he threw a strong left hand at the shot, punching it brilliantly off the line.
The reaction from the fans was a mix of disbelief and frustration.
"Bravo is playing out of his mind tonight."
"How does he save that? It was a fucking rocket."
"I was already celebrating. Unbelievable save."
However, the attack wasn't dead yet.
The ball Bravo punched away fell right to the edge of the penalty area.
Theodore controlled it cleanly.
"Still alive for Villa," Tyler noted. "Theodore Bjorn has it. Will he shoot?"
Since Ayric Laporte had recovered his position, Theodore didn't force a shot.
Instead, he dropped his shoulder and feinted with his left foot, deliberately baiting Laporte.
The Spanish center-back bought it, throwing himself into a desperate block.
Theodore smoothly dragged the ball back onto his right foot, sending Laporte sliding past him.
With the defender out of the equation, he scooped a delicate chip pass over the remaining City defenders.
The ball arced beautifully, dropping perfectly into the path of Jack Grealish.
While the City defense was entirely focused on Theodore, Grealish had stealthily drifted into the box unmarked.
"GREALISH IS THERE AND HE SLOTS IT HO!!! ASTON VILLA ARE LEVEL!!!" Martin Tyler roared, his voice cracking with the sheer drama of the mont.
"THE CHAMPIONSHIP SIDE HAS BREACHED THE PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS! ONE-ONE!"
"A brilliant finish from Grealish, but what about the composure from Theodore Bjorn to set it up!" Neville added over the replay.
