Lu Xian didn’t know if she’d hit the nail on the head or if he was just amused, but he reached out and pinched her chubby cheek, saying, "For soone so young, you sure know a lot."
Twelve-year-old Jiaojiao had already begun growing taller, but her little face still had traces of baby fat. Lu Xian easily pinched a piece of her cheek.
Jiaojiao imdiately whimpered in protest, "Ow, Brother Xian..."
She reached out to slap away the hand pinching her cheek, but no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t knock it off. Helpless, she turned to Ruan Jie for aid. "Brother, help! Brother Xian is bullying !"
Her big, watery eyes looked up at him, full of pleading. Ruan Jie couldn’t withstand his little sister’s gaze. He reached out to rescue her, but Lu Xian stretched out his other arm and pulled Jiaojiao securely into the crook of his arm.
"Admit it, are you going to spout nonsense again next ti?" He pretended to grin nacingly to scare her.
"No, no, Brother Xian, spare !" Jiaojiao quickly waved her hands in surrender, showing her knack for knowing when to yield.
Only then did Lu Xian let her go. Jiaojiao imdiately darted out of his grasp and hid behind Ruan Jie, yelling at Lu Xian, "Brother Xian, I’m going to tell Mom you bullied !!"
Lu Xian made a move as if to grab her again, prompting Jiaojiao to spin around and dash away with the speed of soone fleeing from a chasing dog.
Lu Xian chuckled behind her. Ruan Jie rolled his eyes at him, exasperated. "Why do you keep teasing her? My own sister’s cheek, I wouldn’t even pinch it."
"Sparing the rod spoils the child—you wouldn’t understand." Lu Xian replied.
"Oh, shut up. My sister doesn’t need your so-called care or love!" Ruan Jie retorted irritably, glaring at him. "By the way, Chizi is organizing a get-together tonight. Are you coming?"
"Of course. If I miss this one, chances to et up in the future will be rare." Speaking of this, Lu Xian’s tone took on a rare touch of lancholy.
He, Ruan Jie, and Ruan Chi had been in the sa class for all three years of high school, inseparable as brothers, but after this year’s college entrance exams, they were about to scatter to different cities.
Ruan Jie had followed Old Master Shu’s wishes and applied to the military academy.
Lu Xian, on the other hand, though sowhat inclined toward that option, was unable to pursue it. As the eldest in his family, he didn’t have an older sibling like Ruan Jie did, who could help shoulder the family’s business responsibilities. Instead, he was destined to inherit Lu Zhiwei’s enterprise, which is why he applied to Ye University in Beidu to study business managent.
As for Ruan Chi, he’d applied to Southern University. The three of them were heading to different places, and opportunities to et up would indeed be scarce in the coming years.
The two chatted back and forth, completely forgetting about the girl standing nearby.
That girl was Shen Wenxiang, a classmate of both Lu Xian and Ruan Jie, as well as the class beauty. She’d liked Lu Xian since their first year of high school and had been holding onto that feeling for three whole years.
This year’s college entrance exam had been a disappointnt for her; she hadn’t been admitted to her desired university. She was considering retaking the test but feared missing her chance with the person she liked. Eventually, she mustered her courage and ca over to the Lu Family, using the excuse of borrowing notes as a pretext to confess her feelings to Lu Xian.
But before she could even confess, she’d been sabotaged by Jiaojiao and Ruan Jie.
She had been mortified when Jiaojiao teased her earlier, but later, she picked up on the implications of Lu Xian’s words. Her heart was heavy, though she couldn’t bring herself to leave. Determined, she remained standing there, only to be entirely overlooked by the two boys now.
Standing on the staircase landing on the second floor, she watched Lu Xian and Ruan Jie walk downstairs together, looking as if they had completely forgotten about her. Unable to hide her disappointnt, her eyes reddened slightly as she spoke, "Lu Xian, can I have a word with you alone?"
