Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Liao Zhaoji’s Calculations (4)_1 Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Liao Zhaoji’s Calculations (4)_1 Shalessly asking her for at, yet not caring to weigh so for her own children to eat. Of course, if she were truly poor, that would be one thing, but to clearly have the money and not spend it on her son, preferring instead to give it to the bloodsuckers back in her parents’ ho, and then to co asking her for at—it’s no wonder she doesn’t give her face anymore!
In the past, the Ruanlin Family matriarch never ntioned this in front of the boys, but this ti she just wanted Ruan Chi and the others to see what kind of character their mother was.
Ruan Jiandang had no proper job and mostly scrabbled about in the fields, occasionally taking odd jobs in the town to earn at most twenty yuan a month, and that was only when there were no farm errands and he had ample ti.
That at cost one yuan and twenty cents per half kilo! Most families really couldn’t afford to eat it until New Year’s, yet there she went, casually weighing a whole kilo and taking it back to her parents’ house!
She spoke of nourishing Ruan Chi and the others, but had they even seen a spot of at froth or scrap?
“Mom, did you go to Grandma’s house again today?” Ruan Chi asked, his expression not too good. He had not one good impression of his maternal grandmother’s entire family; when he was young he didn’t understand why, every ti they went to Grandma’s house with gifts, they would fuss over him with warmth, but if they arrived empty-handed, the coldness was frightening.
Once he understood, there was no way he would go unless it was absolutely necessary.
He couldn’t believe his mother had actually weighed out a kilo of at to take there—even though she’d just weighed out a kilo last month’s end. It had barely been half a month; how could she weigh another kilo again?
“What do you know? Go do your howork.” The last ti Liao Zhaoji weighed the at, she did it behind her family’s back, but unexpectedly, on her way she ran into Ruan Chi, who found out. Fearful that he might blurt it out, she hastily tried to preempt him by scolding him.
Turning her head, she then explained to the Ruanlin Family matriarch, “Mom, my mother’s been sick, not feeling well lately. The clinic doctor says she suffered a deficit in her health from a fall last ti and needs to be well nourished. That’s why I weighed out a kilo of at for her.”
“I don’t care who fell or who suffered a deficit in health. If you have money to buy at, then stop begging here. I’m utterly ashad for you!” The Ruanlin Family matriarch didn’t bother listening to those long-winded and foul-slling excuses. She snorted coldly, turned around to head for the kitchen, then suddenly rembered sothing, and turned her gaze back to her.
“Speaking of nourishing soone, let ask you this—Jiaojiao had a narrow escape from death when she fell ill. As her auntie, why didn’t you think to buy her sothing nice to eat, to help her recover?”
Upon hearing this, Liao Zhaoji smoothed her temples, her eyes casting about aimlessly, “Ahem… well, there’s still you, isn’t there?”
The Ruanlin Family matriarch snorted softly, “I am , and you as her auntie are you. How can you conflate the two? Not to ntion, her third auntie made her a piece of clothing, and her fourth auntie weighed out half a kilo of sugar for her. What about you?”
“If you don’t know what to buy, you can give money and I’ll go buy it, or you could even take half a dozen eggs from ho.” As she spoke, the Ruanlin Family matriarch extended her hand to her.
Blocked every step of the way by the confrontational Ruanlin Family matriarch and with her son and many nephews behind her, Liao Zhaoji was cornered, unable to say anything right. Her mind raced for an excuse, and she was about to say all the eggs had been sold for money when Ruan Wei quickly interjected, “Grandma, our house has a lot of eggs now. They can all go to my sister. I’ll go get them right now!” And with that, he started to run off to fetch the eggs.
Liao Zhaoji, utterly exasperated by her foolish son to the point of almost having a heart attack, was also afraid he might actually take out all the eggs in his silliness. She quickly said she would do it and hurried after him.
