Chapter 928: Chapter 928: Trip to Beidu (13)
Xiu Xi didn’t answer, paid the phone bill, and then returned to his room, his expression cold, completely different from the tenderness he had displayed while on the phone.
Who would have thought such a small child could have two faces? The middle-aged man shrugged indifferently, pocketing the money in his inner garnt and adjusting his overcoat before closing his eyes as well.
After the call, Ruan Jiaojiao had a good sleep, and so did Xiu Xi, who was also looking forward to returning ho tomorrow. However, soone from the Duan Family couldn’t sleep at all.
Duan Xin thought about the person he had seen during the day and his father’s recent long trip. The more he thought about it, the less he could sleep, so he simply sat up in bed, put on his slippers, and opened his room door to step out.
He was staying on the third floor, and it was now past nine o’clock. Though the lights in the large house were not out, the quiet was excessive. He stood by the railing on the third floor for a while, but eventually, his curiosity got the better of him, and he tiptoed downstairs.
The patriarch of the Duan Family had not been in good health and so had always lived on the first floor for convenience. However, the first floor had been uninhabited for years because the patriarch’s health had deteriorated to the point where he could only be sustained in the hospital and had not returned ho for a long ti.
Duan Xin walked down from the third floor to the first and sneaked into the patriarch’s room.
Though his uncle’s room had not been lived in for a long ti, it was always kept clean, and aside from a lack of human presence, it was still very tidy.
Duan Xin first glanced at a few tables within sight and, not finding what he was looking for, rifled through several drawers before discovering an old photo album.
The album was quite dated and contained many photos of the Duan Family’s four siblings in their youth. However, color photography had not been available at that ti, so when Duan Xin found his uncle’s photo, he sighed in disappointnt.
He closed the album carefully and placed it back in the drawer. As he left the room, he happened to bump into Duan Qirui, who had just returned from outside.
Duan Qirui was the second eldest of the Duan Family. He had married Duan Xin’s mother, Ai Keyin, in an arranged marriage. Their relationship was moderate at best. Since childhood, Duan Qirui had a severe obsession with cleanliness, which had reached pathological levels, so apart from their wedding night when he shared a room with Ai Keyin and they had a son, Duan Xin, he had never had another child.
Unable to endure such a life akin to widowhood, Ai Keyin had divorced Duan Qirui many years ago.
Duan Qirui still cared for Duan Xin. Seeing him up so late, he stopped his hurried steps to bathe and asked, “Don’t you have classes tomorrow? Why aren’t you sleeping at this late hour?”
“Dad, I heard you went to Fusu City a few days ago?” Duan Xin asked instead of answering.
“Hmm, is there a problem?” Duan Qirui asked, already heading for the second floor. The filth from outside was unbearable for him, and he didn’t bother to ask why Duan Xin was inquiring, rushing into the bathroom to shower.
Duan Xin hadn’t finished asking, but knowing his father’s temperant, he simply sat down on the living room sofa on the first floor and waited for Duan Qirui to co out of the bath.
In the dead of winter, Duan Qirui took a full hour to bathe, his fingers soaked white, and when he ca out in his cotton pajamas, he was stopped by Duan Xin waiting downstairs: “Dad, wait before you go to sleep, I still have questions for you.”
Duan Qirui frowned, looking at his son who had co running from the second floor, his brows furrowing deeply.
