Chapter 931: Chapter 931: Can’t Return (1)
He just wanted to be like his dad, a young master of the Duan Family, to eat, drink, and play every day without caring about anything else.
After listening for a while, Duan Xin could no longer bear it. As soon as the bell rang for the end of the first period, he greeted Wu Long to cover for him, borrowed a bicycle from a classmate, and left the school with his backpack in tow.
Duan Xin rode all the way to the central hospital before stopping. As he approached the corridor, he saw the old Duan patriarch walking towards him with a doctor. He imdiately hid himself away. Only after the old patriarch entered the office did he carefully open the door of the ward and slip inside.
Perhaps it was luck, as usually, when Duan Xin ca to see his uncle, it would be during his unconscious state, rarely catching a glimpse of him awake. But today, as soon as he entered the ward, he saw his uncle with his eyes wide open, seemingly in good spirits.
“Uncle,” he exclaid in surprise, walking up to the bedside.
Duan Qianyang looked at him from the bed. Chronically ill and bedridden, his face had turned a ghastly pale, his body was so thin it was almost without flesh, and even his green eyes seed to be covered with a layer of haze, no longer shining as brilliantly as they had when Duan Xin was a child. It’s important to rember that he was once a famously handso man throughout Beidu.
Duan Xin always felt a pang of distress seeing his uncle like this.
Though Duan Qianyang had been confined to his sickbed for years, his mory was as excellent as ever, not forgetting a face. Despite seeing his nephew only once a year, he recognized him instantly.
He gave a feeble smile, his voice so weak Duan Xin could barely hear, “Xiaoxin, what brings you here?”
Duan Qianyang was just like his na, a very modest and gentle person. Duan Xin rembered how his uncle used to hold him and play with him when he was a child. Recalling the ti he pleaded with his grandfather, he thought his uncle must really miss his own child.
Now, with his health in poor condition and foreseeing his end… he must be especially eager to see his child, which is why he begged the grandfather to find him.
Duan Xin struggled internally for a brief mont before making his decision.
He pulled up a stool and sat by Duan Qianyang’s bedside, “Uncle, I want to ask you so things. You said last ti that you have a child. Can you tell about how old they might be now? Is it a boy or a girl?”
At these words, Duan Qianyang seed taken aback, and the dull green in his eyes suddenly brightened.
Just as he parted his lips to respond, the door to the ward opened. The old Duan patriarch and the doctor stood in the doorway, the old patriarch leaning on his cane and calling out displeasedly, “Xiaoxin, what are you doing here? Skipping class again? That’s unacceptable!”
Startled, Duan Xin imdiately stood up from the stool. Turning his head and seeing the old patriarch’s displeasure, his heart sank even further.
“Dad, Xiaoxin is still a child,” Duan Qianyang spoke softly, his breath so weak that he seed short of breath after finishing the sentence.
The doctor quickly went to him to help with his breathing, while the old patriarch scoffed coldly, “Still a child, but at your age, you’d already been admitted to university! Like this, how could you possibly uphold the entire Duan Family in the future!”
Duan Xin’s face turned red, realizing that this was another display of disappointnt in him. He lifted his head and couldn’t help but retort, “I was never as smart as my uncle, and I can’t make it to university now, but maybe soone else can.” Saying this, he turned his head to look at Duan Qianyang and simply said, “Uncle, I saw a boy at our school, two years younger than , nad Xiu Xi, from Fusu. His eyes are green, just like yours.”
