Qiao Qiqi and Shui Qingcheng took a high-speed train to a provincial capital, then transferred to a bus, and then to a shady three-wheeler... After jolting along for over ten hours, they finally made it to the village they were assigned to, just before dark.
The village was backed by mountains and faced water; the environnt was actually quite nice. It was just that the houses here were way too shabby—still made of mud bricks, lots of them had already collapsed, and no one had rebuilt them.
The village chief warmly welcod the two university students into the village and led them to where they’d be staying. Qiao Qiqi’s expression stayed calm the whole ti, while Shui Qingcheng’s face was full of disgust, her hand clamped over her nose and occasionally fanning the air.
The house they were given was just an ordinary little three-room tile-roofed house, which already counted as the best building in the village. The rooms were rough, but still fairly clean, and Qiao Qiqi was reasonably satisfied.
Shui Qingcheng imdiately started nitpicking, dissatisfied with everything, and even asked the village chief for new bedding. The old village chief was mortified—new bedding, no way. Their village was notoriously poor; where would new bedding co from?
"Village Chief, it’s getting late now, you should head back." Qiao Qiqi said.
"Hey, what am I going to eat tonight?" Shui Qingcheng asked.
"Oh, soone will be assigned to bring your als," the village chief explained.
"What kind of food? If it’s too coarse, I can’t eat it." Shui Qingcheng put on the full young-lady act.
"If you can’t eat it, then go hungry! And shut up right now!" Qiao Qiqi suddenly exploded, startling both of them. The village chief almost jumped out of his skin; he hadn’t expected this pretty little girl to have such a fierce temper!
The village chief didn’t want any trouble and hurriedly turned and ran.
Shui Qingcheng wanted to flare up, but when she saw the cool, indifferent look in Qiao Qiqi’s eyes, she didn’t say a word and turned back into her own room.
Qiao Qiqi turned and went into the other room.
This was a typical rural house: three rooms, with the two side rooms as bedrooms and the middle room as a kitchen, no dining room.
Before long, she heard soone knocking on the door. Qiao Qiqi got up to open it, and a woman in her thirties was standing there, carrying a few stead buns and a plate of vegetables to bring them their al.
