Now reading: Chapter 39: The Artifact [1] from The Last Vampire God, a Fantasy novel by KotaSama.

I begin to run down the corridor while still keeping a close eye on the walls around us.

"Don’t get too far ahead of us Dante!" Lia shouts.

"I won’t!" I shout back while running.

I reach the entrance to the room within a few monts and I can see the woman from before standing in the center of the room. She is definitely the keeper of this artifact or sothing, or maybe it has ties to her in other ways.

She just slightly turns her head to see standing in the doorway.

Her purple eyes are just staring back at as I wait for the girls to catch up to , but she doesn’t seem to be worried. It feels as if it is obvious that I’m not a threat to her.

"Have you co for the artifact as well?" She asks softly, still not fully looking in my direction.

"It would help with my journey, but I’m not willing to die to grab it," I answer with a calm tone.

She turns around the rest of the way with a small smile on her face.

"What makes you think that death would co?" She asks with curiosity.

"The last people I saw outside the cave died with it," I respond while watching her closely.

I finally hear Alia and Lia arrive behind but neither of them are speaking yet.

The woman takes the box from the center of the room and begins walking over to , still keeping the smile on her face. She doesn’t seem to have any malicious intent at the mont.

"They didn’t have the best intentions. You seem to have quite a lot going through your mind compared to them as well," She says with a soft tone.

"I have a lot to get done. It only makes sense that I’d be thinking about it all," I reply while keeping a relaxed deanor.

I don’t feel like any of this is a problem so maybe this will end good for us. She has a way of reading my intentions and I don’t really know how she is doing it.

This could be dangerous and good at the sa ti, it just depends on what she is looking for.

My intentions with the artifact involve wiping out the hunters who brought about the death of my family. I feel like that is valid reasoning to use such a thing.

"Vampires never co here," She says with so shock in her voice.

"We’ve never had reasons to in the past," I reply genuinely.

She finally stands before with the box in her hand, different red lines lighting up throughout it. Seeing it up close like this I can feel sothing strange radiating from it.

"You seem curious," The woman says while staring at .

"What exactly is this artifact?" I ask curiosity obvious in my voice.

"The Heart of the Last Vampire God," She answers with more of a serious tone.

"Why would you be holding it here... Or actually, why are you protecting it?" I question with so confusion.

"I served him before his death. He tasked with keeping humans away from it," She answers while looking down at the box.

The heart of the last vampire god, what could that possibly do for ? I don’t really know how to use such a thing or if I even can use it.

I understand why she would keep humans from taking such a thing now. It isn’t for the humans in the slightest, this artifact belongs to vampires if anything.

"What is your na?" I ask.

"Morrigan," She answers without any hesitation.

If I take this artifact it might be smart to bring her along with us since she is definitely quite strong. She doesn’t appear to be a vampire in the slightest though.

That is why I find it so interesting that she is here by herself. There is definitely sothing special about her that I’ll try to find out at so point in ti.

If she joins us.

"I’m Dante. This is Alia and Lia. I’d like to take this artifact," I say while gesturing to them both.

"You trust them both?" Morrigan questions with a serious look on her face.

"Yes. They’ve helped out a lot," I respond without any hesitation.

"Then it is nice to et you all. You may take the artifact, but I don’t know what’ll happen," Morrigan says while handing it over to .

I take the box from her and within seconds of taking it I can feel a strange surge go throughout my body for a second. It feels incredibly painful until it just disappears out of nowhere.

So I quickly look back down at the box to see it is still exactly the sa as when she handed it to .

What exactly did I just feel? That wasn’t really normal in the slightest. This heart might really be sothing powerful for us to use to the best of our ability.

I don’t think the girls can use it but I definitely can. There’s just no clues on how to use it exactly which makes sense since it is just a heart at the end of the day.

"Open the box."

"Yes, it should be opened."

"Opening it will give all the answers you need."

Will opening it really give all the answers I need? I’m mostly in search of strength so that I can wipe out the damn hunters... Will that give it?

Damnit. I’ll just have to trust the voices on this once again since I don’t really want to hold this without using it.

The purpose of this trip on the way was to gain more power if possible... That’s exactly what I’m going to do. I hope it won’t kill in the process.

I use my right hand to open up the box, revealing a heart inside. Chains all around it with red cloth embedded into the box.
