Chapter 1255: Chapter 1233 Critical Illness

Han Wuniang sat on the couch, wrapped in a fox fur cloak because of the cold. A brazier was lit in the room, and as soon as Manbao entered, she felt a wave of heat rush toward her.

Manbao paused for a mont before following Eldest Lady Han inside.

Eldest Lady Han smiled as she introduced Manbao to everyone.

It was to everyone in the room—not only were the two ladies of the Li Family present, but Third Lady Li was there as well, along with Han Wuniang’s husband, Li Sanlang.

The room was already warm, and with so many people gathered, Manbao felt it was even hotter.

Nevertheless, she glanced at Han Wuniang, still wrapped in the fox fur cloak, and said nothing. After nodding politely to everyone, she turned to Shao and said, “Take out the pulse pillow. Fifth Lady, let take your pulse first.”

The others wanted to exchange pleasantries with Manbao, but seeing her get straight to work upon entering, they respectfully stepped aside to wait.

Shao quickly took out the pulse pillow and set it up properly. Manbao checked Han Wuniang’s pulse and asked, “How far along are you?”

The nanny to her side promptly replied, “The court physician diagnosed it. In just a few days, it will be eight months.”

Manbao glanced at her oversized belly and couldn’t help but feel anxious. Standing up, she suggested, “Shall we move to the inner chamber for a more thorough examination?”

Han Wuniang gave a slight nod, and the nanny imdiately helped her to her feet and accompanied her into the inner chamber. Eldest Lady Han apologized to the others and followed them inside.

The maids in the inner chamber withdrew quietly, leaving only Han Wuniang’s personal maid.

She and the nanny brought in two braziers before they began to loosen Han Wuniang’s clothing.

As Manbao washed her hands, she asked, “Fifth Lady Han, do you feel unusually cold?”

“Yes,” Han Wuniang answered softly, “I’ve been sensitive to cold since I was young, and it’s beco worse during pregnancy.”

The nanny added, “My lady’s hands and feet turn icy as soon as winter cos.”

Manbao nodded in acknowledgnt. Knowing that lying flat might be uncomfortable for her, she directed the maid to place a pillow behind her back, allowing her to lean against it. Only then did Manbao rub her palms together and begin to examine her abdon.

It quickly beca evident that Han Wuniang wasn’t just sensitive to the cold—she was also afraid of pain. At Manbao’s lightest press, she furrowed her brows and instinctively flinched. With slightly more pressure, she imdiately cried out in discomfort.

Manbao frowned deeply and asked her a series of questions in a low voice. However, most of the answers ca from the nanny and the maid nearby.

Manbao understood; in wealthy households, ladies often knew less about their own bodies than the maids and nannies who attended them.

However, when it ca to pain levels, it was not sothing the nanny could answer on her behalf.

After examining her abdon thoroughly, Manbao returned to the initial spot. Applying slightly firr pressure, she asked again, “How does it feel when I press like this?”

The nanny was about to answer when Manbao glanced up at her and said with a smile, “Let Fifth Lady answer, please.”

Han Wuniang paused for a mont before replying, “Painful.”

“How painful? Can you bear it?”

Han Wuniang bit her lip and answered, “I can.”

But Manbao noticed sweat beading on her forehead, indicating severe pain. Although her hands were fine, Manbao tried pressing a little further, causing Han Wuniang to cry out in pain. Her face turned pale.

Eldest Lady Han stepped forward anxiously, “Young Lady Zhou…”

Manbao eased her touch, gently massaging instead. Han Wuniang exhaled a sigh of relief, finding the sensation more tolerable.

At that mont, movent rippled across Han Wuniang’s round belly, and the child inside kicked twice. Seeing it, Han Wuniang broke into a smile and said to Manbao, “Doctor, look! The baby is kicking .”

Manbao sighed inwardly but maintained a smile and nodded, “Yes, the baby is quite lively.”

Afterward, Manbao adjusted her inner clothing and covered her with a blanket. She said, “Fifth Lady Han, please rest for now. I’ll go discuss the dicinal plan with your husband and sister, then return to check on you later.”

Han Wuniang hesitated briefly before asking, “Do I really need dication?”

She glanced uncertainly at her elder sister and asked, “Weren’t you here to assist with the delivery?”

Manbao nodded, “Preparation is necessary before childbirth.”

Saying this, she rose and nodded toward Eldest Lady Han before turning to leave.

Eldest Lady Han instructed the maid, “Take good care of your lady.”

She then followed Manbao out, with the nanny hurriedly trailing behind.

In the outer room, the others had been sipping tea and chatting while waiting. When they saw Manbao co out, they stood up with smiles and asked, “How was the examination? What’s the situation?”

Manbao smiled, nodding politely to them before looking at Eldest Lady Han, “Eldest Lady Han, can we find a quiet place to talk?”

Eldest Lady Han was indeed reluctant to disclose her younger sister’s condition to everyone, so she nodded and suggested to her brother-in-law Li Sanlang, “Let’s head to the study.”

The two ladies of the Li Family were montarily taken aback. Smiling, they asked, “Oh? Wasn’t Doctor Zhou here to check the baby’s position and prepare for the delivery?”

Third Lady Li tugged at her two sisters-in-law and joked, “Let them go. You just ntioned wanting to taste the new tea that arrived at the residence—what perfect timing for to enjoy it now!”

The two ladies of the Li Family quickly caught on and laughed, “Very well. If you like it, we’ll send you so more later.”

Manbao then joined Eldest Lady Han and Li Sanlang in the study for a discussion, accompanied only by the two nannies.

Once the door was closed, Manbao got straight to the point, “Fifth Lady Han’s condition isn’t ideal. First, the baby is too large. From what I felt, the baby’s head circumference is substantial, while her pelvis is quite narrow. Moreover, the baby’s position is abnormal, with its head facing upward.”

The two nannies nodded in agreent. One specialized in overseeing Han Wuniang’s prenatal care, while the other was a renowned midwife brought in from Yongzhou.

“However, the most concerning issue isn’t that,” Manbao continued. “The worst part is her heightened sensitivity to pain.”

Eldest Lady Han asked, “What does that an?”

Manbao picked up a needle and lightly pricked her own hand. “For instance, most people would just feel a sharp sting from this, but for her, it would feel like a knife cutting into her, and the pain would linger far longer.”

She explained, “This is a congenital condition.”

Both Eldest Lady Han and Li Sanlang nodded fervently, “Indeed, Fifth Lady Han has been extrely pain-averse since childhood.”

Manbao added, “Even if I manage to rotate the baby’s position internally and devise ways to help her deliver this oversized baby naturally, she won’t make it—because the pain would be too unbearable for her.”

Eldest Lady Han’s face turned pale, and she asked, “Is there any solution?”

Manbao frowned, “Technically, there are two options, but I must admit I’ve never tried either, so I cannot guarantee their success.”

“One option is a cesarean operation; the other is to use dicinal formulas to reduce her pain.”

Eldest Lady Han and Li Sanlang imdiately said, “We choose the second option.”

Manbao shook her head, “The second option is the most uncertain. Comparatively, I would recomnd the first.”

Eldest Lady Han’s eyes widened, clearly displeased, “How can you say that? Doctor Zhou, didn’t you refuse to perform a cesarean for Mrs. Yue? Why is it that with my sister, you’re so quick to disregard her life?”

“Eldest Lady Han misunderstood. Even with a cesarean, I would prioritize the safety of the mother’s life,” Manbao explained. “What I an by cesarean isn’t like the dangerous thod so midwives suggested, where scissors are directly used to cut open the abdon.”
