Manbao glanced back at Bai Erlang, who was buried in a trunk, and walked over to the windowsill, curiously asking, “Why didn’t you use the door instead of climbing through the window?”

Bai Shanbao replied solemnly, “You didn’t call for , did you?”

Manbao said, “But this is your room, you co back to your own room without us having to call you.”

Bai Shanbao paused, then he belatedly realized, oh, Bai Erlang had moved into his room today; this was his room indeed.

Bai Shanbao glanced at Manbao, turned around to climb out, and then entered from the door with his hands behind his back, circling around the screen to co in.

Manbao said, “You could have just jumped down; why did you bother climbing out and then coming through the door again?”

“Because he’s silly,” Bai Erlang finally found the book he was looking for and was standing gloomily behind the two of them.

Bai Shanbao rolled his eyes at Bai Erlang without reserve and said, “You’re the silly one.

This is my room too, and I should enter it upright and openly.”

He snatched the book from Bai Erlang’s hands, flipped through it, and glared, “A book about ghosts and goblins?”

“Exactly, scared, huh?

Little ladies like you shouldn’t be reading such books.”

Manbao took it and flipped through it, “It seems alright, let read it first.”

Bai Shanbao heard this and was displeased; he imdiately grabbed the book back from her hands and protested, “We agreed to study together; how can you read miscellaneous books?”

“Just for a bit of relaxation; it won’t take up study ti.”

“I’d like to see that,” Bai Shanbao said, “Last ti you read that ‘Chenzhou Travelogue’ and said the sa thing, then you ended up reading it for three days straight and even copied my howork.

No way, you’re not allowed to read miscellaneous books until my mid-year exams are over.”

Manbao: “…”

Bai Shanbao flipped through the book decisively and said, “I think I’ll keep this for Bai Erlang for now; I’ve read a few travelogues already.

I’ll give those to Zhou Lijun first.”

Bai Erlang imdiately seized the book back, nodding repeatedly.

Their tutor also didn’t let them read the Bizarre Tales Book, claiming it might corrupt their temperant.

Zhou Lijun was soone who wasn’t very good at concealing things; if the tutor saw the book, he would definitely suspect they were up to sothing.

A single question would unravel the truth.

Bai Erlang acknowledged his studies were already burdenso, and he had no intention to add to them.

Manbao looked longingly at Bai Erlang’s book, then pushed Bai Shanbao to go find books, “Let see what your travelogues are like?”

Bai Shanbao chuckled and led her around the screen, around the screen again, and then directly lifted the quilt to pull out two books from under the pillow for her.

Manbao felt disappointed at just a glance, as she had read both travelogues, including ‘Chenzhou Travelogue.’ Although well-written, rereading content she already knew was boring, though it was alright to flip through occasionally when she had spare ti.

But she didn’t have free ti; she still had to attend classes in the system’s teaching room at night, and sporadically peruse dical texts brought from the system during the day—she was quite busy, indeed.

Busy enough to find it difficult to read a travelogue she had already read before.

Manbao sighed and took the books with a sense of loss, “Alright then, I’ll take the books to her.”

Manbao handed the travelogues to Zhou Lijun, “You read the travelogues first, and when you feel up to it later, it’s still good to read so history.”

Zhou Lijun asked, “Why must I read history?

I rember the little aunt is supposed to study ‘The Great Learning’ after finishing the ‘Classic of Poetry,’ right?”

“Because there’s a saying, ‘to use history as a mirror,’ it’s not just for knowing the rise and fall, but also for recognizing honor and disgrace, and reflecting on success and failure.

I know you, you study not for anything else, but to not fall behind others, so reading history is essential.”

Zhou Lijun was montarily stunned, then hugged Manbao tightly and exclaid, “Little aunt, you’re the best.”

Her eyes were slightly red as she buried her head in Manbao’s neck, and it took a while before she looked up earnestly and asked, “Little aunt, do you think I can beco very powerful, very powerful one day?”

Manbao asked, “How powerful?”

“Like, having a lot of money, money that I earned myself,” Zhou Lijun pondered.

Manbao asked in distress, “How will you earn it?”

Zhou Lijun shook her head, “I want to be an accountant.

I inquired about it when I was in the county town.

An accountant in a general store earns at least a tael of silver a month.”

She had thought this through before coming here, “I plan to look around and see if there are any stores willing to take as an apprentice.”

Manbao asked, “What if you encounter bad people?”

“That’s why I’m searching for stores managed by won, I’ll start looking tomorrow,” Zhou Lijun gripped the book tightly and said, “But I don’t think I’m very impressive; I’m afraid others won’t want to hire .”

She felt that if she were as impressive as her little aunt, her chances of success would certainly be higher.

Zhou Lijun looked at her little aunt with regret and asked offhand, “Little aunt, what do you want to do to make money when you grow up?”

Manbao thought for a mont and said, “Maybe beco a doctor?”

“That’s even harder, isn’t it?

Little aunt, you’ve only prescribed for our family and the villagers…” and most of them didn’t use the prescriptions anyway.

Scratching her head, Manbao replied, “Once I’m better at it, I’ll try to go out and treat people.”

Zhou Lijun remarked, “Doctors are also mostly n.”

The aunt and niece duo sighed together; why indeed had it been decided that only n should work outside?

It was getting late, and their ti for sadness was brief; Zhou Lijun soon beca concerned about the wasting of lamp oil, put away the book, and said, “I’ll read it tomorrow.”

Manbao also had to return to her area to attend system classes.

The space between the two beds, separated by two screens and a small outer room, was very private; once Manbao lay on her bed and let down the mosquito net, she entered the system’s teaching room for class.

Perhaps because each day was spent fulfilling, or simply because she was too young to have worries, Manbao went to bed to review the dical techniques she had just learned, but fell asleep as soon as she began.

Bai Shanbao and Bai Erlang next door fell asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow.

Even Bai Shanbao himself was surprised by this; he thought he’d be so upset from the day’s anger that he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

But he ended up sleeping exceedingly well.

The next day, he woke up on ti and upon stepping out, saw Manbao also yawning as she left her room.

They exchanged a glance, greeted each other, and together carried wooden basins to fetch water to wash their faces.

Manbao said, “I’ll go to the bookshop to buy books today, and then I’ll start pre-studying the textbooks.”

“Good,” Bai Shanbao paused and asked, “Do you have money?

Do you need to contribute so?

After all, it’s for studying with .”

Manbao shook her head, “No need, the books are for to read, not for your studies.

I checked your booklist, and so of them the tutor will be teaching too; I would have had to buy them anyways.

Besides,”

Manbao confidently lifted her chin and said, “Why wouldn’t I have money?”
