The study room at the Starlight household had good light in the mornings, exactly as Lily had said. The light ca through two tall windows on the eastern wall and landed across the worktable, making the room feel larger and warr, capturing the specific quality of morning light in early autumn before the season fully turned cold.

Elizabeth was already there when Rex ca down.

She had arrived before him, which he had expected. She had arranged the table with the precise organization of soone who does not function well in disorder: the Kregg compact docunt in the center, her own notes from the canyon beside it, two blank ledgers open and ready, and a cup of tea that was still steaming on the corner farthest from the docunts, where it could not be knocked over by accident.

She looked up when he ca in. "Sorry..."

"I started without you," she said.

"I see that," Rex said.

"The Valdric consortium docuntation will be the hardest part to access," she said, which was not a good morning but was the way Elizabeth started conversations when she had been thinking about sothing since she woke up.

"The institutional records from that period are held in the restricted archive, and even with Valentina’s authorization, the access request has to go through the archival office, which ans it takes three days minimum."

"Then we start with what we have," Rex said and pulled out the chair across from her and sat down.

The morning settled on work.

Elizabeth was good at her work in the way that Rex had expected she would be: thorough and thodical, with the specific ability to hold multiple threads of analysis simultaneously and track where each one was without losing the others.

She constructed the relay network structure in the left ledger and the tiline of known Legion activity in the right ledger, cross-referencing them with Kregg’s operational account while maintaining the focused attention of soone who trusted the process more than intuition.

Rex gave her what she asked for and managed what she didn’t ask for, which was the organizational logic underneath the structure she was building. He watched her work and identified where the gaps were before she reached them so that when she arrived at a gap, she found that he had already placed the relevant cross-reference beside her hand without announcent.

She noticed this after the third ti it happened.

"You’re doing that deliberately," she said.

"Doing what?" Rex said.

"You know exactly where I’m going before I get there," she said. "You’ve been placing things before I need them."

"Is that a problem?" Rex said.

She looked at him with the expression she used when she was deciding sothing.

"No," she said. "It’s just—I’m used to working alone or with people who follow my lead when I indicate direction."

"You’re not following, but you’re just... already there."

"Is that a problem?" Rex said again.

"It’s disorienting," she said. "In a way that isn’t unpleasant."

Rex said nothing, which she received without pressing, and they returned to work.

An hour in, Lily appeared at the study room door with a plate of food and the specific expression of soone who had decided that the people inside the room were going to eat whether or not they had thought about eating.

"You both skipped breakfast," she said, setting the plate on the table in the clear space that Rex had coincidentally left open.

"I wasn’t hungry," Elizabeth said, without looking up.

"That’s not the sa as not needing to eat," Lily said. She looked at the table with the focused attention of soone cataloguing the situation. "You’re doing the relay network structure."

"Yes," Elizabeth said.

"Rex explained the concept to once," Lily said. "The way Legion cells communicate without knowing who’s above them in the chain."

She sat down in the chair beside Elizabeth, which was the one Rex had been using before he moved to the other side of the table to give Elizabeth space to spread the docunts. "Can I see?"

Elizabeth looked at Lily with mild surprise, as if she had not expected this specific person to show interest in such a specific topic. "You want to look at the analysis?"

"I want to understand what Rex is helping you with," Lily said, expressing her honesty in the sa direct and unembarrassed manner that characterized her motivations.

Elizabeth glanced at the ledger, then at Lily, then at Rex. She turned the ledger slightly toward Lily and began to explain the relay structure in her usual precise and efficient manner, a style she adopted when she deed the other person worthy of a thorough explanation.

Rex watched Elizabeth explain to Lily and thought about the fact that Elizabeth had not smiled genuinely since she arrived this morning and that the expression she was producing now, explaining the compartntalized structure to Lily, was the closest she had co to it.

Elizabeth was the kind of person who found genuine pleasure in the transmission of understood things, and Lily was the kind of person who received explanations with an attention that made the explainer feel like the understanding was being taken seriously.

It was a productive combination.

Diana ca in twenty minutes later, carrying the second round of tea that nobody had asked for, and she looked at the table and then at Lily sitting beside Elizabeth and raised one eyebrow in Rex’s direction, which communicated, "This is going well."

Rex received this with the slight inclination of his head that communicated, "Yes, I know."

Diana set the tea down and, instead of leaving, pulled a chair to the corner of the table at an angle that was close but not intrusive.

She turned to Elizabeth and asked, "What’s the current gap in the tiline?"

After Elizabeth provided her answer, Diana responded, "The archival records from that period might be in the Apostle network’s correspondence logs rather than the institutional records."

"Mother accessed those logs twice that I know of for her Valdric mission research. The access protocol was different from the standard archive."

Elizabeth looked at her. "Helena used the Apostle correspondence logs."

"Two years ago and again eighteen months ago," Diana said. "I don’t know the full content, but I know she had access that wasn’t routed through the archival office."

"That access would have been granted through the network’s internal authorization," Elizabeth said, and sothing in her expression shifted into the specific alertness of soone who has just found a faster route to a destination. "If that authorization is transferable under Lady Valentina’s oversight—"

"It might cut the three-day wait," Rex said.

Elizabeth looked at him. "How did you know about the three-day wait?"

"You ntioned it when I ca in," Rex said.

She looked at him for a mont with the expression she used when she was not sure whether she had ntioned sothing or whether he had simply known it, and the uncertainty between those two options was itself informative.

"Right," she said.

She wrote sothing in the margin of the left ledger and circled it, which was her notation for a follow-up action. Then she sat back slightly and looked at the table with the expression of soone who has been working intently for long enough that the distance is useful.

"This is—" She paused, then began again. "I’ve done institutional analysis before."

"I know how to conduct a review."

"However, this one has a shape unlike anything I’ve encountered, as the target of the analysis is intentionally designed to elude the type of examination I was trained to perform," she turned to Rex. "The Legion constructed its structure to undermine academic thodology."

"Every hole I identify in the docuntation is a gap they intentionally created."

"This ans that the gaps represent information," Rex said.

"Yes," she said. "But only if you know what the gap was supposed to contain, which requires—"

"Soone who’s been inside it," Rex said.

Elizabeth looked at him steadily.

"Yes," she said.
