After a mont, Qin Mantong's breathing steadied, her chin resting on Xiao Feng's shoulder, motionless, as if she had fallen asleep.
Xiao Feng sighed, feeling it's better to pretend he hadn't heard anything.
At this ti, another taxi stopped by the roadside.
The driver rolled down the window and asked, "Are you getting in?"
"Yes," Xiao Feng replied, supporting Qin Mantong as they headed to the back seat.
But just as he opened the car door, Qin Mantong, who was hanging onto him, suddenly swayed as if she was about to vomit and rushed towards the trash bin.
This ti, Xiao Feng didn't hurry to help Qin Mantong. Instead, he turned his head, watching her back with a suspicion flickering in his eyes.
Running to vomit as soon as a taxi arrives, twice in a row, was this a coincidence?
If the first ti could be explained as a coincidence, then doing it again even while seemingly asleep made it hard to buy the coincidence explanation this ti.
"Bro, are you getting in or not?" the driver urged.
Xiao Feng shook his head, "You can go."
Qin Mantong leaned against the trash bin, dry heaving for a while, then sat on the curb.
Xiao Feng walked out from the convenience store, handing over a bottle of water, "Rinse your mouth."
"Thank you!" Qin Mantong expressed her gratitude. After vomiting twice, she seed more awake, rinsed her mouth, and asked, "Are you going ho tonight?"
"Yes."
"Oh..." Qin Mantong seed a bit disappointed, but quickly got back to normal, saying, "Then could you take to a nearby hotel? Where I live is a bit far from here."
"Okay."
Supporting Qin Mantong as they looked for a hotel along the roadside, Xiao Feng looked slightly grim.
If Qin Mantong intentionally vomited twice just before getting into the car, she must have another motive.
Trying to make sothing happen with him while drunk?
It's indeed possible.
But instinctively, Xiao Feng felt it wasn't like that, at least not entirely.
"Since she has her own agenda, I'll play along to find out her true intentions," he mused, looking up at the crescent moon in the sky, feeling an inexplicable lancholy.
The thing he dreaded most was betrayal from those close to him.
However, maybe he was overthinking it, or it was sothing else entirely?
With mixed emotions, they ca upon a hotel, unstarred but seemingly decent.
Xiao Feng brought Qin Mantong inside, registered with his ID card, and quickly got a room.
"Xiao Feng, can we talk for a bit?" Qin Mantong, sitting on the sofa, pleaded, raising a finger fearfully as if afraid Xiao Feng would refuse, "Just for a mont!"
"Of course." Xiao Feng smiled, taking a glass of warm water and placing it on the table.
They sat facing each other, neither speaking first.
After a long while, Qin Mantong took a sip from her cup and said, "Xiao Feng, I've heard so things about you recently, and I'm quite worried."
"What things about ?" Xiao Feng cooperatively asked.
Qin Mantong put down the cup, with a serious expression, "I heard you've clashed with Bai Family's Bai Huanyu. That old fox is not soone easy to deal with."
"So what?" Xiao Feng shrugged, "Should I go apologize to him and beg for forgiveness?"
Saying that, he was already half certain in his mind that Qin Mantong's behavior tonight was related to Bai Huanyu.
Qin Mantong continued, "That's not what I an. Knowing your character, you definitely wouldn't do sothing like that.
I'm just worried, what if you end up losing to Bai Huanyu..."
"Did Bai Huanyu ask you to tell this?" Xiao Feng suddenly asked.
Qin Mantong's expression changed slightly, nodding, "Sort of."
"What do you an by 'sort of'? Either he did, or he didn't," Xiao Feng said, dissatisfied.
After a mont of silence, Qin Mantong explained, "Bai Huanyu only wanted to indirectly warn you."
"Is it that simple?" Xiao Feng raised an eyebrow, clearly not believing.
Qin Mantong smiled wryly, "The auto shop I work at is owned by the Bai Family. Bai Huanyu just told to warn you, nothing more."
Xiao Feng touched his chin, deep in thought.
From her words, he gleaned two pieces of information.
First, Bai Huanyu's investigation into him was more thorough than he had imagined.
Otherwise, he wouldn't know about his relationship with Qin Mantong.
Second, between Qin Mantong and Bai Huanyu, there seed to be so sort of agreent.
This was evident from her ntioning that the auto shop is owned by the Bai Family, without him having to ask.
It might sound far-fetched, but often voluntarily disclosing information to reduce suspicion is ant to hide even more.
"Phew..." Letting out a long breath, Xiao Feng stood up, "I understand, get so rest early."
With that, he turned to leave.
"Xiao Feng!"
Qin Mantong suddenly stood up, ran over to hug Xiao Feng tightly from behind, choking, "Are you starting to suspect ?"
"Yes," Xiao Feng admitted truthfully, "Before we entered the hotel, you were heavily intoxicated. Yet after stepping through this door, you beca quickly sober.
Is that normal?
And vomiting as soon as you see a taxi, twice in a row, those two instances combined make sense sothing's off."
"I didn't lie to you, I really didn't!" Qin Mantong hugged Xiao Feng even tighter, anxiously explaining, "Bai Huanyu really only asked to warn you."
"Then you've completed your task." Xiao Feng said calmly.
Qin Mantong slowly released her hands, took two steps back, and sat down on the sofa.
Xiao Feng did not turn back, walking step by step towards the door.
Before closing the door, he saw Qin Mantong hugging her knees, her head buried deeply, her body trembling slightly, as if she was crying.
"Click!"
The door closed, and Xiao Feng felt a bit uncomfortable inside.
The young guy at the hotel front desk, seeing Xiao Feng co down so soon, had a slight look of disdain in his eyes.
What's the use of looking handso, if he's not capable?
Yet, he didn't know he should be grateful.
Grateful that Xiao Feng didn't notice his gaze. Otherwise, for the next three months, he wouldn't need to work, just rest in the hospital.
In the room, Qin Mantong got up from the sofa, took off her shoes, and stepped barefoot onto the balcony.
The cold floor brought her mind back to clarity. She held the railing with both hands, looking at the scattered lights and sighed, filled with helplessness.
"People... do change." Qin Mantong murmured.
The past experiences with Xiao Feng played like a carousel in front of her eyes.
She remained in a daze for a long ti, and when she ca to her senses, she realized a tear had unknowingly rolled down her cheek.
This ti seed to be a complete failure, but Qin Mantong wasn't too discouraged.
At least, judging from Xiao Feng's reaction, she still held a certain weight in his heart.
Just then, the phone rang.
After picking it up, Bai Huanyu's voice sounded, "How did it go?"
"I didn't succeed," Qin Mantong replied truthfully.
Bai Huanyu was silent for a while, then asked, "Did you not succeed, or did you not even plan on following my instructions from the start?"
"The process isn't important; the result is all that matters," Qin Mantong said and hung up without waiting for Bai Huanyu to respond.
