"Your Majesty," he groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Do you ever sleep through the night like a normal person?"

Primrose smiled without a hint of guilt. "I can’t help it. I always wake up in the middle of the night."

Salem inhaled deeply, clearly trying to stay patient.

He wanted to say it was probably because she slept too much during the day, but he kept it to himself. Instead, he asked in a calr tone, "What do you need this ti?"

Primrose pointed toward the storage room. "This young woman said she might’ve poisoned the kitchen supplies. Could you take a look?"

Salem frowned. "Why not just toss everything out? And her ... can’t we just throw her in the dungeon?"

He really wasn’t hiding his irritation tonight. [Why does she always call in the middle of the night over things like this? I can’t even sleep in peace anymore.]

Why was he so dramatic? Primrose had only disturbed him in the middle of the night twice—this included—so it wasn’t that often.

Besides, according to so of the maids, they sotis saw light coming from his room past midnight.

So why was he blaming her?! She was the one who let him live in the palace rent-free, eating well, and enjoying all kinds of luxury!

"That’s because I don’t believe she actually poisoned anything," Primrose said, gesturing to the food on the table, so of which had clearly been eaten. "I’m still alive after eating it."

Salem narrowed his eyes. "Weren’t you the one who hired to taste your food first? Even midnight snacks can be dangerous, Your Majesty. Next ti, you might not be so lucky."

[If she suddenly drops dead, His Majesty’s going to bla !] he grumbled inwardly. [And there go all my fancy benefits.]

He didn’t even care about Primrose’s life or death. All he was thinking about was the comfort he’d lose!

"I’m sorry about that, Sir Vesper," Primrose said shyly, trying her best to look innocent. "I was just too hungry and couldn’t wait any longer. I promise I’ll be more careful next ti."

He stared at her with narrowed eyes. [Tch. Why does she blink like that so often? Are her lashes too heavy or sothing?]

Primrose groaned internally. No matter how hard she tried to win him over, it clearly wasn’t going to work.

"Don’t make promises," Salem said sharply. "I want you to make sure you never eat anything again before I’ve tasted it."

Primrose bit her lower lip, then nodded. "I won’t eat before you, Sir Vesper."

"Good." Salem nodded and headed toward the storage room. "Now, don’t touch any more food until I’ve checked everything in there."

She puffed her cheeks slightly in protest. Why didn’t he check the food on the table first? He was definitely doing this on purpose.

Was he trying to train her like a dog or sothing?

Before she could even think of disobeying, Salem added, "Your Majesty, you know so poisons take ti to affect the body, right? Maybe you’ve already eaten one without realizing it. Who knows? Whether you want to die faster or not, it’s up to you, Your Majesty."

Primrose rolled her eyes but said nothing.

Primrose was sure the food she’d eaten wasn’t poisoned. But still ... for so reason, she couldn’t bring herself to argue anymore.

"I’m not that hungry anymore," she muttered, slumping in her chair.

Salem simply nodded in response before walking into the storage room. Primrose tapped her fingers on the surface of the table, her eyes glued to the food in front of her.

Even though she had said she wasn’t hungry, her stomach had been growling nonstop for a while now.

Fortunately, it only took fifteen minutes for Salem to inspect everything.

Primrose couldn’t help but wonder how he managed to taste all the ingredients in such a short amount of ti.

"No poison," Salem said flatly, then glanced over at Hazelle, who lowered her head even more. "But she did eat so of the fruits and chocolates in storage."

Primrose didn’t say a word. Instead, she walked over to the storage room and peeked inside through the door. Sure enough, she saw leftover fruit scraps, like bananas and apples, scattered on the floor, each half-eaten and abandoned.

It looked like Hazelle had only taken one bite of each before throwing them away.

Why would she do that? Her behavior made it seem like she’d never eaten those things before.

Could that really be the case?

Primrose turned back toward her. "Did Dr. Silas know you ca here?" she asked gently.

"No," Hazelle answered softly. "He let sleep early today ... so I was supposed to stay in my room."

Primrose rembered the mont Hazelle had arrived at the palace. Back then, she’d thought sothing bad might happen if the queen hadn’t needed a doctor.

To this day, Primrose still wondered what kind of bad thing that would happen to her.

So now she asked, carefully, "Hazelle, has Dr. Silas mistreated you?"

Instead of answering, Hazelle quietly stood from her chair. "If you don’t plan to punish , may I return to my room now?"

Her thoughts were quiet again, just like always. But for a brief mont, Primrose caught a flicker of sothing.

[Dr. Silas will punish if he finds out I wasn’t in my room.]

What kind of doctor would punish his assistant so harshly just for not being in her room?

Sure, it was normal for a doctor to get upset if their assistant made a mistake with a dosage, but to punish her over sothing like this?

That was going too far.

"You’re his slave, aren’t you?" Salem said, casually, as if he were comnting on the weather. He sat down at the table like it was no big deal and started sampling the food.

Primrose had suspected Hazelle was Silas’s slave ever since she’d heard her thoughts about being sold by her parents.

Still, sothing about it didn’t sit right in her heart.

Having slaves wasn’t unusual in their world. Nobles and powerful people often bought slaves from the slave markets.

But why would Silas, a man who wasn’t particularly wealthy or noble, own one?
