The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me? Chapter 493: The Queen Who Can’t Stop Crying
"Sotis, when I’m bored, I go there. And before you and your father were born into this world, I saw both of your souls there."
Primrose fell silent after hearing his words. For a mont, she couldn’t even breathe properly. She never thought that sothing people called a legend could really be true.
"Then... what did you see?" Primrose asked. She finally beca calr than before. Her tense body slowly relaxed. "What were we doing there?"
"Crying," Leofric answered briefly.
He deepened his gaze as he continued, "Both of you were crying so hard that if you had bodies at that ti, your eyes might have popped out of their sockets."
In the place between life and death, their mories are usually erased so they won’t carry the painful mories of the past into their next life.
Sotis, those mories are also erased as a punishnt, but that only happens to those who committed very serious mistakes in their previous lives.
They are punished by having to live a miserable life in their next life without knowing why they have to live that way.
It is cruel, really, because the people who suffer like that often believe they have done nothing wrong.
Now that she knew what kind of life she had lived in the past, Primrose felt certain that heaven was giving her a reward in this life. After all, she had suffered so much before.
Honestly, Primrose didn’t even know what kind of life she would live after the Cardinal took her back. But no matter what it was, she knew it would be very bad.
No wonder her life with Lazarus felt so peaceful and happy, at least until the Emperor of Vellmoria stepped in and used her as a living truce between the human and beast kingdoms.
"Were we crying because we were sad?" Primrose asked softly.
"No, I don’t think so," Leofric replied in an easy tone. "Actually, you were crying because you were happy to see each other. To be honest, your father didn’t even want to let go of your hand before he was sent to the world first."
"In other words, Your Majesty, even before you were born, your father, Lazarus, loved you so much. I truly believe he never saw you as a burden, and never blad you for his beloved wife’s death."
Usually, Leofric always acted too relaxed and casual. Sotis, he even annoyed Primrose. But right now, he sounded calm, wise, and sincere.
Maybe he was trying to comfort her after everything she had just seen, or maybe he really had two different sides to him. After all, he was very old, so it wasn’t strange for him to be so thoughtful.
"Even your mother loves you," Leofric said gently.
Primrose’s gaze slowly softened. She bit her lower lip because she felt like she was about to cry. "Did I et her too... in that place?" she asked quietly.
Leofric nodded. "You did." He smiled at her. "And she looked so happy when she saw you. I always felt that she had been waiting to et you as her daughter."
"Whether it’s your mother or your father, both of them love you, Your Majesty," Leofric added. "Because in this life, you are ant to receive the love you never had before."
Primrose’s lips trembled slightly as she asked in a small voice, "Because I endured so much suffering in my past life?"
This ti, instead of nodding or answering her question, Leofric only looked at her in silence and smiled.
At that mont, Primrose knew that he was hiding sothing. But she didn’t know what it was, since he was able to block her magic from reading his mind.
Deep down, she also found it strange that he knew so much about her in the place between life and death. There were so many people in that place, right? But why did he pay so much attention to her?
He could even block her magic from reading his thoughts, just like the mysterious man she had t before.
Still, Primrose didn’t believe that Leofric and that man were the sa person. If they really were the sa, it would an that Leofric was her father.
That was impossible.
After all, he loved Lorelle with a pure and sincere heart, sothing the Cardinal would never be able to do.
Primrose was about to say sothing, but the door to her chamber was suddenly pushed open roughly.
"ROSIE!"
Lazarus stood at the doorway, breathing hard, with her husband right behind him. Both of them looked shocked and scared. Their faces were pale, and their eyes were full of worry.
It was probably because Edmund had finally found out that his wife had fainted again for the second ti, right after Leofric broke the mysterious man’s magic.
Still, Edmund didn’t seem to co back the mont it happened. When Primrose quietly glanced at the clock, she realized that nearly three hours had already passed while she was unconscious.
But maybe that was also because Edmund knew that Leofric would take care of his wife while he finished his business in Veloria County.
"What happened to you?! Your husband told that—"
Before Lazarus could finish his sentence, Primrose suddenly rushed toward him and threw herself into his arms. The impact almost made her father fall backward.
Luckily, her husband reacted quickly and held Lazarus’s back, keeping him steady. Because of that, none of them fell.
"Father..."
Primrose wanted to say sothing, but her voice broke because she could no longer hold back her tears. She hugged him tightly, pressing her face against his chest as she cried.
"W-Why are you crying?! What’s wrong?!" Lazarus shouted in panic, completely confused and worried.
[Did soone hurt her while I was gone?! Was she injured?! But she looks fine.] Lazarus thought as countless worst-case possibilities filled his mind. [Or... or did she have a miscarriage?!]
His thoughts grew even darker when he heard Primrose whisper, "I’m sorry..."
"What are you sorry for?!" Lazarus asked even more frantically. "If you broke sothing, then forget it! I won’t even be angry just because you damaged the most expensive things in this manor!"
But what Primrose had broken was sothing far more precious than any treasure.
It was his life.
It was sothing that could never be bought with money or exchanged for anything in this world.
But even so, for so reason, her father still forgave her and even felt happy when their souls found each other again.
How could he be so kind when she was the reason he died?
She had only been a stranger he happened to save from the wine warehouse, and suddenly fate brought them together again as father and daughter.
"I-I... I—"
Primrose’s lips trembled. The words she wanted to say were stuck in her throat. "I’m sorry..." she whispered again. "I’m sorry, Father... It’s all because of ..."
Primrose knew that her father would not understand what she was talking about, but still... she couldn’t help it. She truly wanted to apologize for sothing that had happened to him a long ti ago.
[Why is she suddenly acting like this?] Lazarus wondered. [She has never done anything wrong to ! If anything, I’m the one who should apologize, because I always ssed up her life! And now I can’t even protect her properly.]
[What kind of father am I? A bad one?]
A bad father?
He was anything but that! Compared to the Cardinal, Lazarus was the father she had always hoped for.
"I just... feel like I’ve caused you too much trouble," Primrose finally said in a weak voice. "I almost put everyone in this manor in danger because that man ca here for . I—"
"What are you talking about?!" Lazarus suddenly shouted, so loud that Primrose flinched and turned her face away.
"Burden?!" he repeated, his voice shaking. "How could you ever think that you are my burden?!"
He sounded truly angry, but not because he hated her. It was because he loved her so much that he couldn’t bear to hear her think so badly about herself.
[How could she call herself a burden?!] Lazarus thought in shock. [Is it because I’ve been too strict with her lately? Have I been too stingy?]
[No... that won’t do. I should give her more money after this!]
Primrose pressed her lips together, trying hard to hold back her laughter in the middle of her sadness. She hadn’t even thought about asking him for money, but if he wanted to give it to her, she wouldn’t refuse.
"Rosie, listen to ," Lazarus said gently.
He lifted his hands and held her face with care, making her look at him. "You will never be my burden," he said firmly. "You are my daughter. You are my responsibility until the day I die. Even after you get married, I will always stand by your side."
Then his voice softened even more. "And about that strange man... none of it was your fault," he continued. "I’m just thankful that you’re safe. And even if sothing bad had happened here, I would never bla you for it."
