Now reading: Chapter 63: A Bed Called Edmund from The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?, a Fantasy novel by Zenanicher.

Honestly, yes.

Killing people until his clothes were soaked in blood was cruel and barbaric.

But Primrose wasn’t so naive as to believe he had done sothing wrong. In a world where only the strong survive, she knew that sotis, things like this were inevitable.

She couldn’t expect Edmund to rule with kindness. After all, only a fool would try to show rcy to beasts who create chaos everywhere and proudly display severed heads on spikes.

"You can tell everything, husband." Primrose looked up at him, her eyes soft as she held his hands tightly. "I won’t be afraid of anything you’ve done. I trust your judgnt."

Hearing her words, Edmund’s tense shoulders loosened slightly.

"They attacked us first," he confessed quietly. "I went there to give them one last chance. I wanted to avoid bloodshed, if possible."

His brows furrowed. "But they didn’t even give ti to speak. Before I could finish my words, they started throwing spears at my soldiers. So of them didn’t make it back."

Primrose’s eyes widened, but she said nothing, letting him continue.

"At that mont," Edmund said, swallowing down his emotions, "I knew they couldn’t be reasoned with. I couldn’t risk letting them walk away and bring more chaos to the other tribes. I ... I had to eliminate them."

Edmund quickly looked away, too scared to face whatever answer his wife might give.

[I’m a monster.]

[My wife must hate now.]

[Why did I even admit I eliminated them? I should’ve said sothing softer. But ... how could I lie to her?]

While he was caught up in his panic, Primrose suddenly stepped forward and gently wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a hug.

[WHAT?! WHAT’S GOING ON?!]

[My ... my wife is hugging ! Why is she doing this?!]

[Is this ... is this a farewell hug? Is she about to ask for a divorce again?!]

This foolish Lycan King truly couldn’t imagine anything good at the mont.

"Your Majesty," Primrose said firmly. She purposely called him by his title, like she was speaking to the King of Noctvaris, not just Edmund, her husband. "You did well."

His hands hovered awkwardly at his sides, unsure whether he should return her hug or if he even had the right to touch her.

[Why is my wife praising ? Shouldn’t I deserve a slap for doing sothing so cruel and inhumane?]

But why should Primrose apply human morals when neither the subject nor the object was human?

Beasts were different.

And once again, Primrose had no intention of forcing human values onto their world.

Besides, it wasn’t like human rulers hadn’t done the sa or worse. She had seen how kings and emperors in human kingdoms killed their own people during wars, or punished anyone who opposed them.

Humans and beasts might be different.

But at their core, maybe they weren’t so different after all.

"Husband." Primrose’s voice softened, becoming less formal, showing that now she wasn’t speaking to the King, but to her husband. "I’m glad you ca back safely."

"I ..." Edmund was at a loss for words. He didn’t know what to say to respond to his wife’s kindness.

In the end, he said nothing.

Instead, he gently pulled Primrose closer and returned the hug, holding her like he never wanted to let go.

[She doesn’t have to worry about this much,] Edmund thought.

[I’m strong. I’m not soone who can be killed easily.]

[No one has ever told they were glad to see alive. People just expect to return, no matter what.]

But her words felt different.

[It actually feels ... nice.]

[It feels nice knowing soone is waiting, worrying, and hoping I co back.]

"Wife," Edmund whispered, trying to pick the right words. His hand, without thinking, gently patted her back like comforting a sleepy child. "Thank you for worrying about . I’ll try not to co ho looking like that anymore."

He waited, but Primrose didn’t say anything.

"Wife?"

He lowered his head and froze.

There, sleeping softly in his arms, was his pretty wife.

Primrose had only ant to close her eyes for a mont.

His embrace was just so warm and comfortable. But maybe because she had struggled to sleep properly for the past few days, her body took it as a signal to finally rest.

Her steady breathing, the way her fingers lightly gripped his shirt, and her slightly parted lips made her look far too peaceful to disturb.

"Wife ..." Edmund whispered, pulling her closer and letting out a soft growl of frustration. "If you keep being this adorable, I might really die of a heart attack."

For a mont, Edmund just sat there, helpless.

Should he carry her to her bedroom?

Should he let her sleep like this?

The last ti he moved her, she was too tired to notice. But tonight was different. He could tell by the dark circles under her eyes and the tension she’d been carrying all day.

But tonight ... he knew Primrose had been struggling to sleep, and there were clear dark circles under her eyes. If he accidentally woke her up now, he feared she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep again.

Edmund reached out carefully, his fingertips brushing against her lips before tracing the curve of her cheek. He stopped when his fingers reached her temple.

Primrose flinched slightly, her brows scrunching as if to complain without waking.

[Damn it. She might wake up if I try to carry her to her room.]

[And if I leave her here alone on the sofa, won’t she be angry when she wakes up?]

[No doubt she will. She’ll definitely scold for letting her sleep alone in my study all night.]

[What should I do?]

Edmund glanced around the room awkwardly, searching for a solution as if one might suddenly appear.

[Screw it.]

With careful movents, he slowly leaned back against the sofa, letting Primrose stay exactly where she was, peacefully asleep on his chest.

Now that he wasn’t standing or moving, he realized just how close they really were.

He could hear her breathing clearly, feel the soft rise and fall of her chest, and even catch the faint sound of her heartbeat.

Edmund stayed completely still, stiff like a statue, too scared to move in case he disturbed his adorable wife’s sleep.

All he did was gently pull the blanket over her, covering most of her body to keep her warm.

But the blanket wasn’t even necessary.

Primrose had already found his body warm enough, like hugging a giant, living, breathing teddy bear.

Edmund stared at her, watching how comfortably she snuggled closer without even realizing it.

"My wife ..." he whispered, pinching the bridge of his nose, overwheld by how unfairly adorable she looked.

"I’m willing to be your bed forever," he added softly, unable to hide the small, helpless smile tugging at his lips.
