Chapter 59

Episode 3 (2)

“Ugh. Ahh.”

“…….”

Worden examined Winter, who was wriggling on the sofa while making strange noises. She was squirming like an electrocuted caterpillar on the sofa that Davide usually occupied.

I chuckled at the foolish sight. It hadn’t been a thrilling schedule, but having sothing to imrse myself in had been nice.

The past five days had been a fresh kind of hell. A vicious schedule that tested a person’s endurance. An exam period where only sleeping ti and short breaks existed.

Winter had been sleeping while having nightmares, and Canis had disappeared to the dormitory saying she was tired. To be precise, only Winter had been struggling restlessly the whole ti.

“Indeed. This is? An exam.”

Learning truly was difficult. As Worden muttered that twisted impression, the door of the chapel opened the mont I buried myself in my padded coat.

If it were a guest, it would be proper manners to greet them personally. But soone who entered without knocking was not a guest. Either an intruder, or soone related.

“What is this. Your conditions are……. Ah. Right.”

Davide, who had co carrying all sorts of things, understood the situation on his own and cut off his words. Worden once again admired Davide’s stamina and ntal strength.

Since he had no classes, Davide had no worries about exams. He had tried not to disturb the studying atmosphere inside the chapel.

He had gone to the library, brought back a pile of books, and started reading them. Most of those books were about combat, like military strategy manuals.

It seed he liked books on tactics, because he had spent ti far more intensely than Winter. It would not have been an exaggeration to say he sat on the sofa all day.

And yet he looked the most alive out of everyone. Aside from looking a little tired, there was nothing particularly botherso about his appearance.

“Cult Leader. Are you okay?”

“With what. Stamina? I’m fine.”

“Oh?”

The answer piqued Worden’s interest. He had clearly slept only two hours. While Worden felt an inexplicable sense of unfairness, Davide handed him sothing.

Warm packaging with a delicious sll. Worden, looking puzzled, suspiciously unwrapped it.

“Eat. You worked hard.”

“Wow? Thank you.”

Inside the packaging were sandwiches and hotdogs of all kinds. The neatly packaged ones had the emblem of a famous sandwich shop on Museion Island stamped on them.

I rembered those sandwiches being quite expensive for sothing that was just a sandwich. Worden quickly pulled one out and bit into it.

“Cult Leader?”

“Yeah?”

“Canis too? Should we call her?”

“Canis.”

“Mm~”

“Waa!”

Thinking of Canis, who had also worked hard with them, Worden asked. Davide, who had been about to wake Winter, paused and simply called Canis’s na. Canis suddenly appeared from behind the sofa.

Startled for real, Worden let out a short scream. She giggled at Worden’s reaction and hopped over the sofa.

“I bought sandwiches, but your tastes are pretty refined, so I don’t know if you’ll like them. There are so cookies from a high-end bakery next to it, so at least those…….”

“Oh~ sandwiches. Nom.”

Before Davide could even finish speaking, Canis had already torn open the sandwich wrapper and stuffed it into her mouth. Davide looked at her with pity.

So she had been hungry. Thinking that, he carefully woke Winter, who was sleeping while covered in his jacket.

“Hey. Winter. I bought food. Eat first, then sleep.”

“Mm. Mm.”

“Winter. Do you just want to sleep?”

“Mm. Don’t…… want to.”

“Then let’s eat. Co on, get up.”

“Mm. Don’t…… want to.”

“Then don’t eat, you brat.”

Davide had barely returned to his seat after giving up on waking Winter when Canis snapped her fingers.

Her mana flowed toward the jacket covering Winter. The jacket began to dress Winter on its own, creating a bizarre scene.

Then the jacket dragged Winter over and sat her down next to Canis. Even in that situation, Winter was still sleeping soundly.

“…….”

“…….”

Just as the thought crossed their minds that her dangling head might hurt her neck, the collar of the jacket suddenly flipped upward. It effectively fixed Winter’s neck in place.

Winter sat there half-upright with her mouth slightly open, still asleep. No, normally soone should wake up after going through that much.

The two n watched for a mont before deciding not to worry about it.

“Wow? It’s good. Is it scorpion flavor?”

“It’s soda flavor. I got it recomnded too.”

Davide handed over a drink contained in a plastic bottle. Worden quickly twisted the cap open and drank it. It was food he liked for once.

“That’s it! Eat well!”

“Hey, she’s not even conscious. Don’t feed her. She’ll choke……. She’s eating well.”

Davide had been about to scold Canis, who was personally feeding sandwiches to the forcibly seated Winter, but his words stopped.

Judging by the drool running down her mouth, she was definitely asleep. Yet when sothing was placed in her mouth, she chewed it. She even chewed carefully and swallowed so she wouldn’t choke.

Davide rubbed the corner of his eyes as fatigue suddenly surged over him.

“Huh? Are you crying?”

“Do you want to die?”

“Oh. Sorry?”

Davide shot a slight glare at Worden for saying sothing ridiculous. Worden smiled brightly and hurriedly ate his sandwich.

“But. Is it okay to eat in a chapel~ Goddess. Wow! She’ll get angry~”

At Canis’s words, the busy atmosphere paused.

A chapel was certainly a place for prayer. Since there was barely anything set up here and the scale was small, they had been lacking awareness of it.

But thinking about it, hadn’t the scripture ntioned drinking alcohol here as well? With that thought, it didn’t seem like a big deal to Davide, but apparently Worden felt differently.

Watching the others cautiously, Worden folded the sandwich neatly and placed it back on the table with a solemn expression.

She straightened her posture while wiping her mouth with a handkerchief she had no idea where she had gotten. Acting innocent.

“Goddess. I’m sorry, but may we trouble you a bit?”

I summoned the Holy Scripture and asked carefully. One hand was raised above my head in case it fell on .

“Argh!”

The cunning Anaye flew up in a different way. It looked like it would fall onto my head like usual, but this ti it sprang straight out from the palm I had raised.

Because of that, Davide was struck square on the chin by the heavy Holy Scripture and went flying backward.

“Oh. I should clean up……ah?”

The mont Worden saw Davide get knocked over, he tried to clear the table. Certainly quick judgnt.

But before he could do that, the thick Holy Scripture dropped onto his hand. Since the book was quite heavy, Worden let out a short scream.

“Hey, hey. It’s fine to eat. She’s just being spiteful toward .”

“……Really?”

“For real.”

Davide rubbed his chin, set the fallen chair upright, and started eating his sandwich again. Canis, who had paused while subtly watching the mood, also resud eating her sandwich.

“Goddess? She’s not angry…… right?”

“No. Have you ever seen the Goddess angry?”

Davide scolded Worden for his worried words. The way he spoke sounded as if he had actually seen Anaye get angry, so Canis’s head snapped toward him.

Her eyes were filled with curiosity, and Worden was no different.

“You’ve? Seen her angry?”

“Not angry, but I’ve been hit by her before.”

“, ! I want to hear it! The story of Davide getting beaten up!”

“……There will definitely be a place for you in hell.”

The listeners tilted their heads at Davide’s words. A god was a being of a completely different rank. Not sothing one could et easily.

That was not to say Davide was inferior; it was a limitation equally shared by all living beings born into the world.

Since that was so obvious, how could it make sense that he had been hit?

Canis urged him on with a thick smile.

Davide narrowed his eyes and glared at Canis, but it had no effect.

“The Goddess I saw was a short girl. A little taller than Winter, maybe? Sothing like that. She wore a cloth skirt like dark flas, and her whole body was covered in strange tattoos. In her left hand she held the Sword of the Guarding Obelisk, and in her right hand she held the skull of so horned creature. I couldn’t see her face because she wore the skull of a deer.”

As the detailed description ca out along with his serious expression, Canis imdiately realized it was not a lie.

So this was what it ant to be a Cult Leader. Possessing the ability to commune deeply enough to face a god directly.

That was never an easy thing.

Even Worden, who had joined recently but had been studying diligently, could guess how incredible that was.

“So? How did you get hit?”

“……Lady Anaye released lightning. Lightning spreading out in all directions. And from the Sword of the Guarding Obelisk, a beam of light made of lightning burst out.”

“And? Did you get fried after getting hit by that?”

“……Don’t open your mouth. If you open it one more ti, I’ll pray all night and shove you into hell.”

“Wupwup? Wupwup wupwup uuuuwup?”

Anyone else might have shrunk back at Davide’s sharp words, but the little devil Canis pretended to zip her mouth shut and then continued talking with her lips closed.

It was nothing but ‘wu’ and ‘wup,’ yet sohow Davide understood exactly what she ant. His eyes glead as he stood up from his seat.

Worden clapped as if impressed by Canis’s strange talent. Then he felt Adrenaline activate.

“Cult Leader? What about the Goddess?”

Worden instinctively stopped Davide. Davide’s body didn’t have that much strength in it.

But judging from the gleam in his eyes, it was clear he was considering whether he should kill the girl in front of him.

Worden asked with a blank look. Davide let out a deep sigh and sat back down.

“Yeah. She’s always like this. I’m sensitive because I haven’t slept. Just like you said. The Goddess I saw looked like that, and the Goddess Winter saw looked different.”

“Oh? What did she look like?”

“A white deer. A white deer with antlers growing from its head, but with such delicate lines that it didn’t look like a stag. Red cloth was tangled around the antlers, and on one side of them was the Silent Bell that Winter wears.”

Worden nodded as if he had heard sothing fascinating.

If it was a god, would it be strong? Of course it would be strong. Wouldn’t it be thrilling?

Worden looked excited, while Canis, who had wanted to hear the story of Davide getting beaten up, smacked her lips in disappointnt.

Seeing that, Davide grabbed the back of his neck and let out a deep sigh to calm himself.

Today, Canis felt especially annoying. Normally Davide would have won in this kind of exchange. Even though he looked fine on the outside, he was actually very tired right now.

“Ueh?”

“Oh my~ Our sleepy Winter princess has finally woken up?”

“Huh? Canis?”

Only then did Winter blink her eyes as if she had just woken up. Canis imdiately began teasing her, lightly patting her on the butt.

Winter blinked blankly, looked at Canis, tilted her head, and then picked up a sandwich from the table.

What. How did that happen?

“Huh……. Why am I full?”

“……I’m going insane.”

Watching her take a huge bite and then say she was full made Davide feel dizzy. There was not a single normal one among them. Not a single one.

“You’ll get indigestion.”

“Ah. Thank you.”

He handed a drink to Winter, whose eyes were half closed. She nodded her thanks and slowly ate the sandwich at a painfully sluggish pace.

After chewing nearly thirty tis, she finally swallowed it. Watching that, Davide and Worden felt frustrated, while Canis looked like she might die from how cute it was.

“Cult Leader? What do we do now?”

Worden, who had been rubbing his protruding belly, brought up the topic. Davide looked at him with curiosity.

He was the type who simply did things when told and stayed still when not told. Yet for once, this passive guy was asking about plans.

“Why. Do you have sothing to do?”

“What about the desert?”

“Ah, right.”

The condition Davide had offered when he first recruited Worden. The promise that he would let him encounter a legendary monster in a brutally dangerous desert.

Worden, who had roughly finished adapting to the Order, finally asked about it now. I rubbed my chin between my index finger and thumb.

The ‘Olla Desert’ that Worden ntioned was the main stage of Episode 3. Originally, the events there were supposed to happen during sumr vacation, but we had to go on a pilgrimage during the break.

Doing it early during a quiet ti like now didn’t seem like a bad idea.

“We’ll have to go on a long-term mission.”

“Long-term? A mission!”

Davide nodded heavily. Worden broke into a bright smile.

Adrenaline enjoyed in a place where one’s life was threatened.

Just imagining it was exciting.

“Should we prepare to go to the desert?”

“We should.”

“The desert?”

Canis, who had been busy teasing Winter and hadn’t been listening, reacted late. Davide looked at her with an indifferent face.

“What desert are we going to~”

“The Olla Desert.”

There were three deserts in the Empire. Among them, the harshest and most mysterious was the Olla Desert. Canis raised her hand high.

“I want to go too!”

“Hmm.”

Davide quietly closed his eyes. He was going to ignore her silently. After all, Canis wasn’t even part of the Order, so there was no need to take her along.

Besides, it still felt suspicious to trust Canis.

Then a good idea ca to mind. The Olla Desert was an extrely dangerous place.

And it was a rare type of long-term mission. The academy would not approve it easily.

“What would you even do if you went?”

“The desert~ It’s mysterious~”

Surprisingly, mages liked the desert environnt. Among the existing natural ecosystems, there was no place as full of mysteries as the desert.

They just didn’t go often because, by nature, they hated inconvenience and hardship. But if given the opportunity, the desert was popular enough for them to seriously consider it.

“But~ the academy won’t give permission~”

“I’ll handle that myself.”

“Will it work out~”

Canis tilted her head and gave a sly smile. I looked at her as if she were ridiculous.

Suddenly, Winter’s eyes opened wide.

“Uh? I…I want to go too.”

Still not fully awake, Winter raised her hand, saying she would participate as well, as if feeling left out.
