The Reincarnator's System: Building a Harem and an Empire as a Genius. Chapter 23: A change of growth
The next morning arrived like every other day.
Adrian had fallen asleep on the bed, hugging his pillow tight with an open book resting at the side of his head.
It was not surprising in the slightest.
Reading before sleep was a habit he had practiced for years, one that had never once loosened its hold on him regardless of how exhausted the day had left him.
But even though his eyes were shut, he could still hear the familiar voices drifting in from nearby.
"Awwn, he looks so handso when he sleeps like this."
Ca a female voice, warm and entirely too pleased with itself.
While he could hear her clearly, Adrian could not bring himself to open his eyes.
The awkwardness alone made that impossible.
A few monts ago, Liora and Kara had walked into his room and settled themselves onto his bed.
At first it had seed like they intended to wake him.
Now, it appeared they had other ideas entirely.
"Should we wake him up?"
"Well, it is his birthday, is it not? Lord Adrian turns eighteen today. He should be waking up by himself by now."
Adrian frowned slightly beneath his pillow.
Without any hesitation, Kara settled herself directly on top of him, both hands coming to rest on his chest.
Unlike the others, who had grown considerably over the past eight years, Kara had never needed to.
She had always been grown, in every sense of the word.
Her thighs pressed against either side of him as she stared down at his face, her expression sowhere between fascination and intent.
"What are you doing?" Liora spoke from the side, fully grown herself and quite noticeably so in the ways that the years had shaped her.
The confusion on her face shifted into sothing sharper as she watched Kara’s fingers drift slowly toward the top of Adrian’s trousers.
Liora grabbed her hand before she could go any further.
"Wait!" she said.
Kara paused and looked at her.
"What is your problem? Master never lets see it no matter how many tis I ask. This is a perfectly good opportunity. Do not ruin this for ."
"I know," Liora replied, her face flushing red as she brought her free hand up to cover her mouth.
Then she pointed.
"Lord Adrian is awake."
"Eh?"
Kara turned imdiately, only to find Adrian already looking up at her with his usual deadpan expression, flat and entirely unimpressed.
"G-Good morning, Master... did you sleep well?"
Bang.
Adrian shifted to the side without ceremony, and Kara dropped off the bed and hit the floor with a thud she had seen coming from a considerable distance.
It had not stopped her from ending up there regardless.
A breath later, Adrian was seated at the edge of the mattress with both Kara and Liora kneeling on the ground before him.
One wore her maid uniform, neat and composed despite everything.
The other was dressed in sothing far more elaborate, the kind of gown that suited the title of demon queen considerably better than the situation it had just been worn in.
He stared at them both for a mont, then let out a long, quiet sigh.
"For a demon, you have an extraordinary number of problems."
Kara pouted and looked to the side.
"You always refuse to let see."
"You are not supposed to be seeing it in the first place."
It took everything Adrian had not to raise his voice.
Before he could say anything further, the system notification blood in the air before him.
[Na: Kara.
Class: SSS Devil Queen.
Rank: Fifth Circle Caster.
Bond: 120%.]
And beside it, Liora’s followed without prompting.
[Na: Liora.
Class: SSS Asura.
Rank: Fourth Circle Caster.
Bond: 100%.]
Adrian looked at the numbers in silence for a mont.
He could not stop the smile that ca.
For eight years, he had cultivated them carefully, deliberately, ensuring that every person bound to him grew into sothing the world would struggle to place a ceiling on.
Every contracted subordinate had gone through the sa gradual process, shaped by ti and challenge and the quiet accumulation of power that only ca to those given the right conditions.
And now, reading those numbers, he felt sothing he had no clean word for, sothing close to pride, though more personal than that. More earned.
He rose from the bed without a word and moved toward the door.
"My lord." Liora’s voice followed him imdiately. "Please do not forget that we are expected in Thornwall today. The negotiations."
Adrian stopped and looked back at her.
"We are?"
"Yes, my lord. The other demon lords have agreed to et with you there. Surely you have not forgotten."
’Right. That is true.’
He had not forgotten so much as let it slip beneath everything else the morning had already thrown at him.
After the events of the forest, and his ergence as a demon lord in any aningful sense, rumours had spread across neighboring territories with the particular speed that tended to follow anything no one could fully explain. People had begun asking questions.
Why did the Ashre army carry more demons than n? Was the county being ruled by sothing other than human? Was it safe?
In the years that followed, the answers had sorted themselves out in practice.
Demons who lacked the temperant for combat had quietly folded themselves into Ashre society, taking up trades, filling roles the county had long struggled to staff, becoming neighbors in the way that only happened when no one made a formal announcent about it.
Ashre had beco, without fanfare or deliberate policy, the first territory in living mory to house both races under the sa roof with any degree of stability.
It ca with risks. He was not naive enough to think otherwise.
But it also ca with sothing most territories in the kingdom had never once produced.
Proof that it was possible.
Adrian exhaled through his nose.
"Very well. Have the horses ready. We leave once I am done."
"As you wish, my lord. I will let Valentina know."
With that settled, he stepped out of the room.
...
So ti later, dressed and composed and carrying the particular stillness of a man who had decided what kind of morning it was going to be, Adrian made his way down the corridor and stopped in front of a familiar door.
He drew a slow breath, then knocked twice.
"Erica. Are you there?"
His voice ca out softer than he intended, the edge taken off it in a way that only happened at this door and nowhere else.
The sound of footsteps ca almost imdiately, quick and heavy against the floor, and then the door swung open.
Erica stood in the fra, a wide smile already on her face. The sa smile she always had when she opened it to find him there.
The kind that looked like she had been waiting for exactly this, every single morning, without fail.
"Big brother!"
Before he could get a word in, she had taken hold of his hand and pulled him inside.
He found himself sitting on the floor with his back against the wall, Erica settling herself between his legs, her back against his chest, pulling his arm around her waist with the practiced ease of soone who had done it so many tis it had stopped requiring thought entirely.
Adrian sat with that for a mont, mildly flustered in the quiet way he always was.
"You do not want to sit on my legs today?"
"This is better," she said simply, her head shifting against his chest until she found the position she wanted. "It is the sa thing, is it not?"
Adrian never quite understood why she was like this. They were the sa age.
They had grown up in the sa house, under the sa grief, through the sa impossible years.
But whenever he turned it over in his mind, the answer always pointed to the sa place.
It had started when he turned fifteen.
