Arthur gave him a aningful glance: “Looks like you’re living more comfortably at Scotland Yard than I imagined.”
Ledley quickly shook his head with an apologetic smile: “I wouldn’t dare! Sir, you know, us intelligence workers are like mudskippers in the water, always trying not to be scooped up and made into soup. These past few years at Five, I’ve been working really hard, how can it compare to your glory days in Russia?”
Arthur squinted slightly as he listened: “Glory? Ledley, you think too highly of . Haven’t you read The Tis? I’m currently stuck in the muddy Caucasus, unable to get out.”
Ledley wisely closed his mouth imdiately, replacing it with a diligent smile. anwhile, he glanced at the cigar nearly extinguished between Arthur’s fingers, and naturally pulled out a silver matchbox, striking a match to politely offer Arthur a relight.
Arthur watched Ledley, like a tiger eyeing a nimble fox.
He tapped the armrest lightly and slowly said, “How has the Police Intelligence Departnt been doing lately? Are Thomas, Charles, Tom, and Tony all well these days?”
Ledley pondered while quickly organizing his words. His smile remained as slick as ever, his tone filled with flattery and respect.
Ledley shook the whiskey glass in his hand: “Thomas, Inspector Thomas Plunkett, is still the sa—cold, precise as always. I heard he just found a French exile’s underground Republicanism club near Piccadilly Square in the Soho District last week, so these days, he and his Ghost Team are busy keeping an eye on those Frenchn. You know, this area never lacks restless foreigners.”
Arthur smiled but did not respond, continuing to listen to Ledley’s report.
“As for Chief Field…” Ledley smacked his lips: “He is currently busy investigating a jewel theft case, the thieves’ thods are clean and swift, causing quite a stir among the gentlen and ladies in the West District. As you know, Charles is a workaholic; his bedti reading is a clue notebook. When he encounters such a case, sleepless nights are commonplace.”
Arthur slightly nodded his lips: “That does sound like his style.”
“Tom is still digging through those old archives in the record room. Besides paper scraps and dust, there’s probably nothing else there. In my opinion, living a mixed life is fine, but he’s absorbed in archival managent.” Ledley laughed: “But you know, just the other day he actually found new clues to an unresolved case from three years ago in an old archive, and now he’s eagerly preparing to revisit old accounts.”
“Tony…” Ledley’s smile grew wider, showing a hint of mocking: “He’s been having quite a bit of trouble lately, the sergeants in Greenwich are living comfortably, and incidents of rowdiness by drunkards are common. Just last month, a drunken Royal Artillery Captain beat up a police superintendent in Greenwich. So Tony went there personally and without hesitation, handcuffed the captain and threw him into the interrogation room overnight.”
Arthur raised an eyebrow: “And then?”
Ledley chuckled: “Then the next day, his brothers in the military ca rushing in, but Tony has always had guts, he sat in the office, sipping tea leisurely and waiting for them. He even scared them by saying that the artillery captain said many disrespectful things about the Royal Family in his drunken stupor. So according to legal procedures, after he was tried in the civil court for drunken disorder, he should be handed over to the military court and judged according to the Military Law Regulations. The people from the War Departnt initially had a tough stance, but upon hearing that Tony was going to report to the War Departnt, they imdiately softened. In the end, the officers ran their mouths dry, with much apologizing and paying a hefty dical fee, they barely managed to take the person away.”
He spoke slowly, with a hint of gratification in his voice: “Tony has made progress, he’s no longer the young hothead he used to be.”
Ledley imdiately nodded in agreent: “Of course, Sir. People always have to grow, your teachings back in the day did not go to waste.”
Arthur glanced at him, and laughed softly: “It’s a pity that so people seem to stay in place, unwilling to improve.”
Ledley felt his heart tighten, imdiately plastering on a smile: “Sir, your words are making anxious inside. I’ve been diligent over these years, never daring to slack off.”
“Really?” Arthur gently blew a smoke ring: “Then why is everyone busy, except you enjoying leisure here?”
Ledley’s heart tightened, his eyes flickering slightly: “Sir, your words are unjust. The affairs at Five are nurous, never a mont of idleness.”
“Oh?” Arthur deliberately elongated his tone, leaning back leisurely on the chair, his gaze piercing through the swirling smoke, straight at Ledley: “That’s quite strange, how co I heard your responsibilities have diminished quite a bit lately?”
“Sir, where did you hear that from?” Ledley asked as he poured wine, probing: “People at Scotland Yard are quite the gossips, you shouldn’t believe everything!”
“I didn’t just hear it.” Arthur’s tone carried a casualness: “But…if you’re not busy, I do have a task that needs your help.”
