As Jolthar and Nytheria arrived at the mines, the scene before them was industrious yet orderly. The wooden compartnts, though modest, were neatly arranged and well-maintained, each designed to accommodate the workers and provide for their basic needs.

These compartnts were a testant to Cleora's care and diligence—she had ensured that the miners had shelter, access to food, and a place to rest after long hours of labour.

Jolthar dismounted the drake, his boots crunching against the gravelly ground as he surveyed the area.

Nearby, Nytheria remained with the drake, her fingers gently caressing its scaled neck as though whispering silent reassurances to the creature. Her silver eyes glanced occasionally toward Jolthar, her usual calm deanour unchanged, though she seed content to let him handle the interactions for now.

Inside one of the larger compartnts, Cleora was seated at a sturdy wooden table surrounded by a few miners and foren. She was in the middle of a discussion, her tone firm yet empathetic, as she addressed their concerns and offered solutions.

Even in a setting as rugged as this, she exuded grace and authority, her presence commanding respect from those around her.

The mont she noticed Jolthar at the entrance, her expression softened, and she raised her hand in a welcoming gesture. "Co in, Jolthar," she called, her voice warm. She then dismissed the workers with a few final words of encouragent, and they bowed slightly before exiting the compartnt, leaving the two of them alone.

Cleora's eyes sparkled as she regarded him, her smile both inviting and knowing. "I hope your night's sleep was restful," she began, though the subtle arch of her brow and the teasing lilt in her tone suggested she already knew the answer.

Jolthar sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Well, I spent most of the night awake, waiting for soone to co and… seal the deal," he said, his voice tinged with both exasperation and amusent.

Cleora's smile widened, and there was a glint of mischief in her gaze as she responded, "I apologise. I was preoccupied with my daughter. Nora needed my attention, and I couldn't just leave her like that."

Her words were casual, but the way she locked her gaze with his—her piercing blue eyes holding his as though searching for sothing deeper—made Jolthar's pulse quicken.

For a mont, he was struck speechless, his usual composure faltering.

Cleora was unlike anyone he had ever encountered. Her beauty, her commanding presence, and her effortless charm placed her in a league of her own. He'd dealt with many won before—ladies of court and warriors—but Cleora stood apart as a force of nature, seemingly untouchable.

If anyone could match her regality, then it would be the Matriarch of the Blue Rose; she was in a league of her own.

Realising his sudden fluster, Jolthar cleared his throat and quickly shifted the topic to the mines. "How are things here? How's everyone holding up after the last… incident?" His voice steadied, though he still felt the heat rising to his face.

Cleora's expression grew more serious, the playful glint in her eyes giving way to concern. "They're doing well, considering the circumstances," she said, folding her hands in front of her. "I've been personally overseeing their welfare. The workers are being treated fairly, and I've ensured they're paid on ti. I won't let anyone exploit them, no matter the pressure from outsiders."

Jolthar nodded, his respect for her deepening. "It's admirable, the way you've taken charge here. Not many would go to such lengths for their workers."

Cleora smiled faintly. "It's not just for them. It's for the barony. If we don't take care of our people, the foundation crumbles. A strong community is the backbone of our success."

As they spoke, Jolthar's attention shifted to the activity outside the compartnt.

From where he stood, he could see workers hauling carts loaded with ore out of the tunnels. The gleaming rocks, so with faint tallic hues, hinted at the wealth hidden within the ground. Jolthar's sharp eyes assessed the ore, his mind calculating its quality with practiced ease. Even without closer inspection, he could tell that the purity of the tal was exceptional—these mines were a treasure trove, and it was no wonder that they were a target for opportunistic lords like Eude.

"Impressive," he murmured, gesturing toward the carts. "The quality of the ore here is remarkable. I can see why it's such a valuable asset to the barony."

Cleora followed his gaze, her expression thoughtful. "It is, but it also makes us vulnerable. People like Eude won't stop until they get their hands on it. That's why I need people I can trust to protect what's ours."

Jolthar turned his attention back to her, intent in his eyes. "You don't have to worry about that. I'm here to ensure no one takes what rightfully belongs to you—or your people."

Cleora's gaze softened, and for a mont, the tension in the room seed to ease. "I appreciate that, Jolthar. Truly. But protecting the mines is only one part of the puzzle. We need to think about the future—how to grow, how to strengthen our defences, and how to ensure the barony thrives even in the face of adversity."

Jolthar nodded, already formulating ideas in his mind. But before he could respond, Cleora's gaze lingered on him once more, a subtle smile playing at her lips. "You're full of surprises, aren't you? I look forward to seeing how you plan to help us achieve all that."

The intensity of her gaze made his heart skip a beat, but he forced himself to focus. There was work to be done, and he couldn't let himself get distracted—not entirely, at least.

Jolthar's mind churned with possibilities as he examined the operation of the mines. The ores being brought out weren't just valuable; they held the potential to beco the foundation of a war economy. If he could control the production of swords, armour, and other war materials, the barony could beco a regional powerhouse.

He turned to Cleora, his expression thoughtful but determined. "I'm thinking of opening a forge here in the barony," he said, his voice steady.

"Not just any forge—a large one capable of producing swords, armour, and even siege weapons. With the resources these mines provide, we could monopolize the production of war materials."
