Since he entered prison, he has always had a pessimistic worldview. He believed that life no longer had any aning for him, and that he could no longer find anything aningful in the world, including parents, friends, relatives, brothers...
However, this ti, Zhou Kai and the others traveled thousands of miles to find him and also pulled him out of that earth-shattering scam. This sense of brotherhood allowed him to rediscover the bond amongst brothers.
"Zhou Kai." Liu Cheng suddenly spoke up.
"Ah?" Zhou Kai quickly asked, "What's wrong?"
"Will we always be good brothers?" Liu Cheng curiously looked at Zhou Kai.
"Of course!" Zhou Kai nodded and said, "From childhood to now, from now to the future, we will always be good brothers. Won't we?"
"Yes!" Liu Cheng nodded and firmly said, "We will always be good brothers!"
Although the volu of their conversation was not loud, Lin Chuan heard every single word clearly. A faint smile appeared on the corners of his mouth, and hearing Liu Cheng's words, Lin Chuan finally felt at ease and imdiately let out a sigh of relief.
"Chuanzi Bro, hurry up and make your move." Lu Dapao urged from the side, "I have already set the dealer, waiting to win the hand."
"Alright, alright." Lin Chuan nodded hastily.
They set out in the morning and finally arrived at Jiangbei City after 10 PM. When they arrived at Jiangbei City, everyone felt as if their bones were about to turn soft.
"Finally ho." Lu Dapao let out a sigh of relief and said, "Damn, this journey almost killed ."
"Go ho and rest!" Lin Chuan said with a smile.
"Go ho and have a good sleep." Lu Dapao said with a laugh.
At this mont, Zhou Kai quickly said, "Liu Cheng, you'll sleep at my place tonight, and tomorrow I'll accompany you back. You need to have a good talk with your parents. You should also make a statent and admit your fault. After all, they're your parents, so they won't be too hard on you!"
"Right." Liu Cheng nodded and said, "Having chosen to co back, I have already made up my mind."
"That's good." Zhou Kai nodded.
The weekend was finally over, and they had to go to work early tomorrow. Lin Chuan had a fairly comfortable weekend. It wasn't until he took out his phone that Lin Chuan realized Tang Yung had actually called him. Perhaps because he was too focused on playing cards in the car, he had not heard his phone ring.
Lin Chuan thought about it and decided to call her back.
The call connected.
"Lin Chuan, you bastard, where have you been these past two days?" Tang Yung asked sternly.
"I..." Lin Chuan blinked and smiled, "It's the weekend, isn't it? Am I supposed to work on the weekend?"
"You're my driver. I don't have weekends, so where do you get yours?" Tang Yung asked angrily.
"Sis, is there sothing you need for?" Lin Chuan inquired curiously.
"Can't I call you if there's nothing urgent?" Tang Yung questioned.
"No no no, not at all!" Lin Chuan shook his head and said, "I was just wondering."
"Co to first thing tomorrow morning." Tang Yung replied.
"Sis, what's the matter?" Lin Chuan asked curiously.
"If I say co, just co." Tang Yung replied irritably, "It's so late now, I need to sleep. Co over early tomorrow morning."
"Yes." Lin Chuan nodded.
After hanging up the phone, Lin Chuan went to sleep at ho, his mind churning, wondering what Tang Yung could possibly need him for? Tomorrow is Monday, isn't there a City Committee eting? Surely she wouldn't have him stand at the eting to be criticized again so early?
After much thought, he still couldn't figure it out, and Lin Chuan could only leave helplessly.
When he got back ho, Mrs. Lin was still awake.
"Mom, why haven't you gone to bed yet?" Lin Chuan asked.
"Chuanzi, where have you been these past two days?" Mrs. Lin's face was somber.
"I... had so things to do and went out." Lin Chuan replied, "Mom, has sothing happened?"
"Today is the anniversary of your father's death." Mrs. Lin looked at Lin Chuan and said, "Why were you not at ho all day?"
Lin Chuan was stunned, glanced at the offerings and the incense burner on the altar, and imdiately rembered. Today was indeed his father's death anniversary. Lin Chuan felt a little guilty and awkwardly said, "Mom, I'm sorry, I ca back late."
"Quick, co over here and offer the incense." Mrs. Lin glanced at Lin Chuan.
Lin Chuan hurried in and then lit three sticks of incense. Watching the portrait on the incense altar, Mrs. Lin couldn't help but let her tears fall.
"Sigh, it's been over a decade since you left, you haven't looked after us, your wife and son." Mrs. Lin sighed with emotion and then said, "If there is a spirit in the heavens, hasten to let our Lin family flourish and branch out so I can relax a bit. Otherwise, I have to constantly worry about the Lin family's lineage."
Lin Chuan exhaled a sigh of helpless breath and then said, "Mom, don't worry, I will definitely give you a healthy grandson soday."
"I have waited so many years already." Mrs. Lin said with a choked voice.
"Rest assured," Lin Chuan embraced his mother, saying, "It won't be long before you get your wish."
"I hope so!" Mrs. Lin nodded.
Under the light, Lin Chuan saw that the black hair on his mother's head had turned white. The greyish-white hair hiding on her head was so glaring, so painfully poignant. Lin Chuan felt a sting in his heart. He had been gone for eight years, and during these eight years, he didn't know how his mother had managed to get through. She not only had to endure the criticism of others but also the pain of losing her husband and 'losing a son'. Eight years had passed in a blur, no wonder his mother's hair had turned white before she even reached her fifties. Lin Chuan felt another sting in his heart.
Seeing that her son had returned, Mrs. Lin finally breathed a sigh of relief. After 11 o'clock, she went back to her room to sleep. She still had to get up early for work the next day, as sanitation work is very tough and requires starting work early, otherwise she would lose this job that she relied on for livelihood.
Lin Chuan sat alone in the living room smoking, his gaze fixed on the portrait on the incense altar.
His father's gaze in the portrait was kind and amiable as if living before his eyes. Lin Chuan's mory was suddenly pulled back to his childhood, as if he could feel his father's love. But those days didn't last long before his father passed away.
Lin Chuan sighed and felt sowhat helpless.
It seed, he should settle down and start a family. Having decided to be an ordinary person, he should settle down in Red City and stop thinking about all those ssy things. Lin Chuan took a deep breath, as if making a firm decision in his heart.
He didn't sleep well that night, feeling very lancholic, and his dreams filled with the sight of Mrs. Lin's white hair. It seed as if she was continuously urging him to have a healthy son for her.
The dream lasted until the next morning.
Lin Chuan woke up from the dream, glanced at the clock on the wall, and realized it was already past eight in the morning. Lin Chuan hurriedly got up, washed up quickly, grabbed the stead buns and soy milk on the table, and headed out.
Lin Chuan nibbled on the stead buns while driving.
Upon arriving at the City Committee, Lin Chuan didn't go to the break room to clock in but headed straight to Secretary Tang's office. Xiao Xue was hesitating at the door.
"Lin Chuan, you're here?" Xiao Xue looked at Lin Chuan with surprise.
"What's the matter?" Lin Chuan looked at Xiao Xue, bewildered, "Why are you standing at the door? Why not go in?"
"There's been an incident," Xiao Xue whispered.
"What happened?" Lin Chuan's heart grew heavy, wondering what could make Tang Yung so angry and even make Xiao Xue afraid to enter.
"I just heard about it myself." Xiao Xue moved closer to Lin Chuan's ear, so close that he could sll her fragrance, especially as her red lips approached his ear, the whiffs of breath were enough to stir Lin Chuan's heart. Xiao Xue said, "It's said that the gymnasium under construction in the north city area has collapsed, burying more than a dozen workers inside. Now the families are extrely agitated, and at the critical mont, the developer chose to abscond with the money."
"How could this happen?" Lin Chuan frowned.
"I don't know either." Xiao Xue shook her head, "Right now, Secretary Tang is having a fit in the office."
"I'll go and take a look." Lin Chuan said urgently.
With that said, Lin Chuan pushed the door and entered. As soon as he opened the door, he could sense a strong scent of gunpowder inside. In the office, the Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Developnt, the head of the demolition office, and the director of the planning bureau... several leaders were there, each one silent and cautious.
"I demand that you hand over the people by tomorrow afternoon," Tang Yung held the phone with a stern face, "This is no ordinary disaster, this is a preditated cri, a criminal offense. By tomorrow afternoon, your public security departnt must capture the culprits, otherwise, I will hold you accountable!"
"Yes, yes!" Director Chen was sweating profusely on the other end of the phone.
After hanging up the phone, Tang Yung swept a gaze across the people present.
"You are also to bla for this accident," Tang Yung looked at the people there and said, "Now all of you go back and assist the public security departnt in capturing Ding Dahua."
"Yes!" The group nodded.
When Tang Yung saw Lin Chuan coming in, she said, "Alright, you all leave now. And report any updates to imdiately!"
"Yes!" The leaders imdiately stood up and left.
After these fellows left, Lin Chuan looked at Tang Yung and said, "Sis, isn't the gymnasium still under construction?"
"Yes!" Tang Yung nodded, "It is indeed under construction. I had a third-party departnt investigate this accident, and they gave the results last night. It happened because of an insufficient amount of steel in the fra structure, substandard quality, in addition to their violation of construction regulations, which led to this disaster."
"Were the buried workers rescued?" Lin Chuan asked.
"The rescue work is still underway," Tang Yung sighed, "Up to now, five have died, and eleven are missing."
