Now reading: Chapter 108: The Seventh Territory from The Ten Thousand Deaths : 1000x Exp System, a Fantasy novel by AryanDhull4622.

The seventh territory was two days north of Drevenmoor.

He had been saving it.

Not consciously — the routing had been practical, the seven territories arranged by geography and the logical travel path between them. But when the routing was complete and the seventh was last he had understood sothing in that without examining it.

The seventh was last because the seventh was different.

Not the deepest wound. Drevenmoor held that designation and would hold it until Wren’s thread was established and the presence flowed and the correction workers Vael trained continued the work.

The seventh was different because of what Dael’s pattern docuntation had identified about it.

The pattern note had been brief and unlike Dael’s usual precision.

Territory seven. The node data shows a correction worker presence. Duration cannot be determined from available data. The node records for this territory have a quality I have not encountered in any other location. They look like the node records from Venmoor’s deep layer after the door beca perable. A pause in the written docuntation. The territory’s surface nodes are reading as post-threshold. Before the work has begun. Another pause. I don’t know what this ans. Go and tell what you find.

Dael not knowing what sothing ant.

Which in three months of field work had happened twice.

Both tis the not-knowing had pointed toward sothing significant.

He walked north from Drevenmoor.

The between-space quality changing as he walked.

Not degrading — the opposite. The between-space running fuller with each kiloter north, the transition layer interference thinner, the root network less dense.

Not because the wound was less present.

Because sothing had been working here for longer than the thodology docuntation could account for.

By the second day Oren said: "The aggregate cost in this territory."

"Yes," Kael said.

"It’s lower than the kingdom’s current reading," Oren said. "Forty-eight point sothing." They paused. "The kingdom is at forty-nine point six. This territory is lower than the kingdom." They paused. "Without the Domain. Without the five-ability combined signal. Without the oversight board or the school or the Kingdom Agreent." They paused. "The aggregate cost in this territory is lower than the kingdom’s." They paused. "How."

He didn’t answer.

He walked faster.

The settlent at the territory’s center was small.

Forty houses, a well, the specific scale of a place that had grown to the size it needed and had stopped there. The between-space quality here was — he reached for the word.

Full.

Not the fully present between-space of the pre-withdrawal records Nara had been reading.

But fuller than anything he had encountered in six months of field work.

Fuller than the kingdom after the threshold.

Fuller than the territories after the gradient work began.

Sothing had been running here for a long ti that was not the correction work as docunted.

Sothing that had been healing the wound from a different angle than the thodology described.

The person who ca to et them at the settlent’s edge was a young woman.

Young — twenty at most, the between-frequency quality of soone whose ability had been expressing for two or three years.

Not ancient like Vael.

Not decades of isolated work like Senn or Soma.

Young.

She looked at the four of them with the expression of soone who had been expecting a specific arrival and was running a rapid assessnt of whether the arrival matched the expectation.

"You’re from the signal," she said.

"Yes," Kael said.

"The combined signal." She paused. "I felt all five abilities in it." She paused. "I’ve been waiting." She paused. "Not as long as so. But waiting."

"What’s your na," he said.

"Mira," she said.

"How long have you been doing the correction work," he said.

"Two years," she said. "Since my ability expressed." She paused. "But my grandmother did it before . And her mother before her." She paused. "This settlent has been doing the correction work for — " she paused. "We don’t know exactly how long. The records go back eleven generations. The work was running before the records."

Eleven generations.

He looked at the settlent.

At the forty houses.

At the between-space quality fuller than anything he’d encountered.

"The wound here," he said. "The between-space work — eleven generations of people doing the correction work — what does the wound look like now."

"Co and see," Mira said.

She walked.

He followed.

The wound at this settlent’s center was not what he expected.

He descended into the between-space at the location Mira indicated — the settlent’s well, the center point that the correction work had been focused on for eleven generations.

The root network was present.

The wound was real.

But the root nodes here were — changed.

Not disrupted in the way he disrupted them. Not fractured.

Worn.

The specific quality of sothing that had been worked on consistently for so long that the working itself had altered the material.

Eleven generations of correction workers applying pressure to the root nodes from the surface layer, unable to reach the between-space directly, working with whatever approach had developed in this specific settlent over the generations.

The nodes were worn.

Not broken.

Not fractured at the key points.

But thin.

The transition layer interference still present but reduced — not by the between-space approach, by sustained surface-layer pressure over eleven generations of work.

The long way.

The patient way.

The way that took eleven generations because the between-space access hadn’t been available.

The roots worn down over two hundred and more years of consistent patient work.

He ca up.

Looked at Mira.

"Eleven generations," he said. "Wearing the roots down."

"Yes," she said. "We didn’t know what we were doing. Not precisely." She paused. "The knowledge passed down as practice rather than theory. What to do without full understanding of why it worked." She paused. "My grandmother’s mother’s mother received sothing from the signal — not the five-ability signal, the earlier ones. The first combined signal, years ago." She paused. "She sent a letter through so correspondence chain." She paused. "We’ve had the thodology docuntation for three years." She paused. "Before that — just the practice."

Just the practice.

Eleven generations of just the practice.

He thought about what the roots looked like.

About the difference between worn and fractured.

About how close to the threshold this territory was.

"The between-space access," he said. "Your ability — what is it."

"I don’t have a na for it," she said. "The System’s classification calls it a Class irregularity." She paused. "I can feel the worn places in the roots. The places eleven generations of work has thinned the network." She paused. "And I can — push." She paused. "Not the between-space technique you’re describing in the thodology docuntation. A direct push at the worn places." She paused. "Two years of pushing at the thinned nodes." She paused. "Three of them have fractured on their own since I started." She paused. "Without the full between-space access." She paused. "Just pushing at the worn places my family found."

Three nodes fractured.

From pushing at places eleven generations of work had thinned.

He descended again.

Found the three fractured nodes.

Found the forty-seven remaining worn-but-not-fractured ones.

The work eleven generations had been doing toward.

The work he could finish in a week.

He started imdiately.

The week in the seventh territory was the quietest of the seven.

Not because the work was easy — the worn nodes required a different approach than the intact nodes. Not the gradient flowing through resistance. The between-space finding the worn places and expressing through the thinness rather than around the density.

A third expression of the unified thodology.

The wear as the path.

The patient erosion as the prepared channel.

He worked through forty-seven thinned nodes over six days.

Each one fracturing cleanly.

The eleven generations of patient surface work having done precisely what it needed to do — not finishing the job, because the surface work couldn’t finish the job, but making the finishing possible.

The holder’s work and the healer’s work.

Different.

Sequential.

Both necessary.

Mira watched him work the way Vael had watched him work in Drevenmoor — not passively, with the specific attention of soone learning through observation what the thodology docuntation had described in the abstract.

On the third day she began working alongside him.

Not the full between-space technique — her access was the direct push, the surface approach she had inherited from eleven generations of family practice. But she could feel the worn nodes better than he could. Her ability specific to this territory’s wound, developed in the soil of this specific settlent.

"There," she would say. And he would feel what she was pointing to and the between-space work would run more precisely.

Her eleven generations of inherited knowledge as the map.

His between-space access as the chanism.

Two functions.

Working together.

On the sixth day the last node fractured and the transition layer interference in the settlent dropped below the expression threshold simultaneously.

Not one fragnt expression.

The settlent’s full fragnt-carrier population expressing at once.

Forty-two people.

All at once.

The between-space returning to a settlent that had been working toward this for eleven generations in a single afternoon.

He stood in the settlent’s square and felt it through the Domain’s extended awareness — the fullness increasing, the between-space flooding back into the space the worn nodes had been creating room for over two hundred years of patient work.

The tide coming back in.

Mira was standing beside him.

"Is this normal," she said.

"No," he said. "This is specific." He paused. "Eleven generations of preparation produced this. The work was ready before the between-space access arrived." He paused. "The between-space ca back all at once because the space had been made for it." He paused. "Prepared space."

Mira looked at the settlent.

At forty-two people experiencing the comparison simultaneously.

At two hundred years of patient work arriving at its result.

"My grandmother would have liked to see this," she said.

He thought about his mother.

About his father at the mine.

About the three copper coins.

About work that is done for people who aren’t there yet.

"She did see it," he said. "In everything that made today possible."

Mira was quiet.

Then: "What do we do now."

"Everything the school teaches," he said. "The oversight board model. The honest System curriculum. The between-space technique — your ability combined with the full thodology, you’ll develop the full access as your practice grows." He paused. "And Wren will thread the origin point when the threshold holds steady." He paused. "The presence will flow." He paused. "The between-space returns the rest of the way." He paused. "You continue the work. Your generation and the next." He paused. "The settlent has been doing this for eleven generations. It doesn’t stop now." He paused. "It changes character. The patient wearing becos the open channel." He paused. "But the work continues."

Mira looked at him.

"You’re going ho," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"And then," she said.

"More territories," he said. "The network expanding. The thodology reaching. The school training." He paused. "The between-space returning." He paused. "The trajectory shortening." He paused. "One territory at a ti."

Mira looked at the settlent.

At the forty-two people in the square whose fragnts had expressed.

At two hundred years and eleven generations of work arrived at its first completion.

"Send the school," she said. "We have students for you."

"Yes," he said. "You do."

His System pulsed.
