The thread Wren established through the perable door changed things.

Not dramatically. Not overnight. The specific incrental change of a new channel opening where no channel had been — information flowing through it, slowly at first, then more steadily as the threading quality improved with use.

What the thread carried was not language.

Not even the System’s between-frequency transmission register.

The thread carried — quality.

The specific quality of the between-space on the other side of the door expressing itself through the established connection. Not communication in the sense of content. Communication in the sense of presence — the between-space that had withdrawn making itself present through the thread the way a river makes itself present through the channel it flows in.

Wren described it to the group on the first morning after the door beca perable.

"The thread is unlike any thread I’ve established in thirty-seven years," Wren said. "The connections I maintain between people and places — they carry the between-frequency information that people generate through their relationships. Their histories. Their ongoing connections." They paused. "This thread carries sothing that doesn’t have a human origin." They paused. "Not information. Presence." They paused. "The between-space on the other side is — vast." They paused. "What the thread carries from it is a fraction of a fraction of its presence." They paused. "But even a fraction of a fraction of sothing that large — it changes the quality of everything the thread connects to."

"Changes it how," Oren said. They had been tracking the Cost Sense data since dawn, the present-tense cost readings at the origin point and the surrounding territory showing sothing different since the thread was established.

"The aggregate cost," Wren said. "You’re reading it differently today."

"Yes," Oren said. "The cost at the origin point — where the thread is anchored — dropped overnight. Significantly." They paused. "Not the root disruption producing fragnt expressions. Sothing else." They paused. "The cost of the between-space absence itself." They paused. "The wound costs sothing. Not the suppression that grew in the wound — the wound itself. The absence of the between-space has a specific cost in the territory’s System architecture." They paused. "The thread carries presence from the other side. The presence begins filling the wound." They paused. "The cost of the wound drops in proportion to how much presence fills it." They paused. "A fraction of a fraction." They paused. "But present."

"How much did it drop," Kael said.

Oren read the data.

"The origin point imdiate vicinity — three percent," they said. "The territory broadly — less than one percent." They paused. "Small." They paused. "But the rate of change matters as much as the magnitude." They paused. "The rate is accelerating as the thread quality improves." They paused. "If the threading continues to strengthen — the between-space presence flowing through the thread will increase." They paused. "The cost drop will accelerate with it."

Three percent at the origin point.

Less than one percent territory-wide.

From one thread.

Wren established.

He thought about what thirty-one threads would do.

About what threads in every territory would do.

About the interconnected healing running simultaneously.

About what the cost looked like when the between-space presence was flowing through established threads across the world.

"The correction workers in the thirty territories," he said. "The root disruption thodology Dael docunted. The fragnt expression support. The between-space return threshold." He paused. "We need to add this." He looked at Wren. "The threading to the origin point. The door becoming perable. The between-space presence flowing through the thread."

"I need to teach it," Wren said. "The threading to the perable door is different from the threading I’ve been doing. The sa fundantal technique but the target is not a person or a place in the standard sense." They paused. "It requires the threading capacity that has developed through sustained work in a healing territory." They paused. "The correction workers need the between-space work first. The healing second. The perability third. Then the threading." They paused. "In sequence." They paused. "The thread cannot be established until the door is perable. The door becos perable only after sufficient healing. The healing requires the between-space work." They paused. "The sequence is the thodology."

"Dael," Kael said.

Dael was already writing.

The thodology docuntation expanding — the root disruption section complete, the fragnt expression support section complete, the between-space return threshold section complete, and now the fourth stage being added.

The threading to the perable door.

In the days following the door’s perability the territory changed quality in ways that went beyond the Cost Sense readings.

Nara felt it in the node data.

"The historical records in the nodes near the origin point," she said. "The Frawork mory reading the deep historical data." She paused. "The oldest records — the pre-System layer, the pre-human settlent layer — they’re becoming more legible." She paused. "Not just more accessible. More legible. The data was always there but the between-space absence had been — obscuring it. Making the oldest records harder to read." She paused. "As the between-space presence flows through Wren’s thread the obscuring reduces." She paused. "I can read data now that I couldn’t read two weeks ago." She paused. "The deepest historical layer. What was here before the withdrawal." She paused. "What the between-space was like when it was present in this territory."

"What was it like," Kael said.

Nara read for a long ti.

"Abundant," she said finally. "The pre-withdrawal between-space in this territory — the node data from that era describes a between-space that was — fully present. Not thin the way it’s been running for however long the withdrawal lasted." She paused. "The natural ability ergence in that era was — different from what we know." She paused. "Not the fragnt expressions we’ve been supporting. Full expressions. Clean. The transition layer running without interference." She paused. "People developing abilities at the rates and depths the System’s clean architecture is supposed to support." She paused. "But more than the System’s clean architecture." She paused. "The System’s clean architecture approximates the pre-withdrawal state. It doesn’t reproduce it." She paused. "The pre-withdrawal state was — what the System was designed to approximate." She paused. "The actual thing the approximation was approximating."

The actual thing.

Not the System’s honest version.

The thing the honest version was pointing toward.

He thought about the blank multiplier.

About x1000 as an approximation.

About the actual value being unclassifiable.

About what the actual value was when the between-space was fully present.

About what x1000 was approximating.

About what the System beca when the approximation was no longer necessary because the actual thing was present.

"The abilities in the pre-withdrawal era," he said. "What were they like."

Nara read the deepest records.

Was quiet for a long ti.

"The node data describes them as — not limited by the System’s classification frawork," she said. "The System classifies abilities within its architecture. Death’s Chosen. Grave Walker. Frawork mory. Cost Sense." She paused. "In the pre-withdrawal era the abilities weren’t classified because the classification frawork wasn’t yet present." She paused. "But the data describing them — the quality of what people were doing, what they were capable of, how they moved through the world — " she paused. "It’s larger." She paused. "Not more powerful in the combat sense. Larger in the sense of — more present. More connected to the between-space that was running fully." She paused. "The Class abilities were expressions of the fully present between-space rather than the System’s approximation of what those expressions would look like if the between-space were present." She paused. "The difference between a river and a map of a river." She paused. "Both describe the sa thing. One is the thing."

About the blank multiplier becoming unnecessary when the absence healed.

"The healing work," he said. "The root disruption. The fragnt expressions. The between-space returning." He paused. "What we’re doing — we’re not restoring the System to its honest state." He paused. "We’re restoring the thing the System was approximating." He paused. "The System will be what it was after the healing — honest, clean, the honest architecture running." He paused. "But the between-space fully present will be — more than the System." He paused. "The System runs in the absence. In the presence — it becos sothing different."

Fen was listening.

"The visibility," they said. "I make the suppression chanism visible. That’s the System-layer function." They paused. "In the pre-withdrawal era — the node data Nara is reading — what was the equivalent function." They paused. "If the between-space was fully present and the System’s approximation wasn’t necessary — what was the visibility pointing toward."

Nara read the specific section.

"Complete transparency," she said slowly. "Not making chanisms visible to people with System sensitivity." She paused. "Making everything visible to everyone." She paused. "The between-space fully present ans the between-space is the dium everyone exists in." She paused. "The suppression chanisms couldn’t exist in that dium." She paused. "Not because they were made visible and people could refuse them." She paused. "Because the dium they needed to run in — the between-space absence — wasn’t present." She paused. "Suppression requires absence. Presence prevents suppression." She paused. "The visibility is the System’s approximation of what full presence does automatically."

Suppression requires absence.

Presence prevents suppression.

He sat with that.

The between-space fully present was not a world where suppression was identified and removed.

It was a world where suppression couldn’t take hold.

Because the dium it needed — the absence, the wound, the withdrawn between-space — was healed.

The correction function’s purpose was not to correct forever.

It was to heal until correction was unnecessary.

"Oren," he said.

Oren had been running the Cost Sense at full sensitivity through the whole conversation, the present-tense cost data tracking every conceptual developnt in the room.

"The pre-withdrawal era cost," Oren said. "The aggregate sensation. What the node data says it was." They paused. "Nara — can the Frawork mory read the cost data in those records."

Nara reached.

Read.

"Zero," she said. "The aggregate sensation in the pre-withdrawal era was — the Cost Sense wouldn’t have had anything to feel." She paused. "Not zero in the sense of the kingdom’s forty-nine point eight." She paused. "Zero in the sense of — there was nothing to feel because the cost of the between-space absence was not present because the between-space absence was not present." She paused. "The Cost Sense’s function was not needed." She paused. "Not because suffering was absent." She paused. "Because the specific cost of the between-space wound wasn’t in the architecture." She paused. "Different kinds of difficulty existed. Human difficulty. The ordinary cost of being alive." She paused. "But the wound’s cost — the suppression’s cost — the institutional harm built on the wound — none of it." She paused. "The Cost Sense would have been a different ability in a different world." She paused. "Or not an ability at all."

Oren was quiet for a long ti.

He looked at them.

"Is that — " he started.

"Good," Oren said. Simply. "That is the answer I’ve been looking for since the Awakening." They paused. "Nineteen years in a cell. The ability to feel every cost. The aggregate sensation of a world running at a hundred and twelve." They paused. "I wanted to feel zero." They paused. "Not to stop being able to feel it. To feel zero because the cost was zero." They paused. "Because the wound was healed." They paused. "That’s the anchor." They t Kael’s eyes. "That’s what I’ve been pointed at." They paused. "Not showing the cost so it can be addressed. Healing until the cost isn’t there to show." They paused. "The Cost Sense existing to make itself unnecessary." They paused. "That’s the anchor."

The chanism pointed at its own dissolution.

The correction function healing until correction was unnecessary.
