Amadeus Yancey trapped her within his embrace, lips curling into a half-smile, half-smirk, "I am your... friend?"

"..." Was there sothing wrong?

The shirt he was wearing was the one Nathalie Quinlan had bought for him, and upon close inspection, one could tell he had ironed it ticulously, cherishing it greatly as he wore it.

The hand leaning against the corridor column, adorned with the silver bracelet Nathalie had bought, dangled at his wrist.

His eyelids were thin, his gaze restrained; he blocked the way, his voice brushing past her ear like a feather’s touch, teasing.

"Not ’big brother’?"

In the past, she used to call him ’big brother’ all the ti.

Back then, she knew to put on an act in front of him, obedient to a fault.

Now she was so casual with him.

His eyes and eyebrows were teasing, "Not calling ’big brother’ anymore?"

A feeling of irritation rose in Nathalie Quinlan’s chest again. Everything was fine, yet whenever she was cornered by him or alone with him, she felt as though she was bound hand and foot.

She thought seriously about this question, raised her head, and retorted earnestly, "Should I call you ’uncle’ then?"

Amadeus Yancey: ...

"Edric calls ’sister,’ I call you ’brother,’ it’s weird, don’t you think? If you don’t want to say you’re my friend, it has to be ’uncle’ then."

Nathalie Quinlan was doing it on purpose.

She knew saying this would bewilder the man before her, but she didn’t want to be oppressed by the sa person every ti.

The feeling was very unpleasant.

"Little uncle?"

The girl’s voice was hoarse and soft, not sweet, but rather unique.

Her eyes were sly; it was apparent she was purposely making fun of him, like an agitated cat baring its claws, ready to scratch him.

He savored the term ’little uncle’ for a mont; it was unusually provocative when coming from her mouth. However, it was perhaps too provocative.

The familial hierarchy was a ss.

It would be too troubleso to change the way he addressed her later on.

Amadeus Yancey withdrew his hand, straightened up, his manner elegant and distinguished, "Forget it, let’s just be friends."

Victory!

Nathalie Quinlan almost couldn’t restrain herself from shouting ’Bingo,’ she lifted her eyebrows, telling him, "I’m going to wash my hands."

As she passed by Amadeus Yancey.

The man’s low, husky voice ca from behind her.

"Nathalie, I don’t mind adding another word before ’friend’!"

Adding a word before ’friend,’ a term popped into Nathalie Quinlan’s head.

Boyfriend!

She stumbled, her body swayed, and she nearly tripped as her left foot hit her right.

Amadeus Yancey’s voice, calm and mischievous, drifted over, "...Good friend."

Nathalie Quinlan had just steadied herself when she heard the rest of his phrase.

Her face instantly blushed crimson.

Damn, she was getting ahead of herself!

She fled in a panic.

*

A week flashed by.

Jane Bailey was still in the Detention Center.

In the anti, Mrs. Bailey had visited the Tucker Family several tis.

On the last visit, she brought a scarf, weeping, apologizing to her late husband, and threatening to hang herself at the Tucker’s.

The Tucker Family was greatly disturbed by her antics.

Adelia Tucker felt she owed this woman a favor.

After getting nowhere with Nathalie Quinlan, she went to see the principal of No. 1 Middle School, Rein Jones, the old smooth-talker who, upon hearing her out, claid that since the girl had been sent to the police station, their school couldn’t do anything to release her.

She suspected the Zachmann Family was putting pressure from behind the scenes.

She had no choice but to use her family connections to reach out to the McKinney Police Chief.

This chief, newly appointed, had good relations with the Tucker Family, whose support had contributed to his promotion. He could certainly be considered one of their own.

She explained Jane Bailey’s situation to Hendra Wafford, adding that the Zachmann Family was involved too, and Hendra Wafford readily agreed, promising it won’t be long before they could get her out.

Only then did her heart settled down.

She told Jane Bailey’s mother to go ho and wait to pick her daughter up, and then she herself arranged another dinner with Hendra Wafford.
