She was nothing like the avatar.
That was the first thing my brain registered before everything else caught up.
The avatar was pastel and round and designed to be universally appealing.
The woman standing in the doorway was none of those things. She was sharp where the avatar was soft.
Precise where the avatar was playful.
She was tall.
Not unusually but enough that the white dress she wore landed differently than it would on soone shorter.
It was simple, structured at the shoulders, falling cleanly to just below the knee.
No excess. No decoration except for a thin gold chain at her throat with a small opal pendant that caught the light when she moved.
Her heels were nude, low enough to be practical, high enough to be intentional.
Her hair was red but not the red people an when they say red hair.
Hers was a deep faint red that in certain light looked almost brown and It was combed back and smooth, one side tucked behind her ear.
Her eyes were the strangest thing about her.
They were light.
Almost colorless at first glance.
But as she walked into the room and the light shifted I realized they were not colorless at all.
They were picking up the white of her dress and the pale stone floor and reflecting all of it back, like water reflects sky.
She extended her hand.
"Ethan Cruxs," she said.
"That’s ," I said and shook it.
Her grip was firm. Brief. Professional.
"Raina Takahashi."
She sat down across from and crossed one leg over the other and settled her hands in her lap.
"Though you probably know by a different na."
I had been holding the folder with the client overview sheet facing inward. I had read the line at the bottom thirty seconds ago and was still recalibrating.
"Lumi♡Live," I said.
"Yes." No performance in it. No sparkle. Just confirmation.
I sat back down.
For a mont neither of us said anything. The woman from earlier appeared silently with a glass of water, set it on the table beside and disappeared again.
Raina looked at with those light shifting eyes and said, "I owe you an apology."
" oh no , you don’t have to."
"I do." She said it cleanly. No argunt in her voice, just certainty.
"My fans are protective. Sotis too much so.
What happened after the stream was not sothing I anticipated and I should have addressed it sooner than I did."
I set the folder down.
"For what it’s worth I wasn’t trying to be cruel. The comnt was genuine. I work in visual dia. I notice things.
"The smile never dropped the entire stream and it started to feel less like enjoynt and more like effort.
I wasn’t mocking you."
She was quiet for a second.
"I know," she said. "That is actually why I reached out."
I waited.
"Most people who leave critical comnts are performing for the chat.
You weren’t. You were watching properly." She tilted her head slightly.
The sa gesture the avatar made. I noticed and put it away .
"I found your portfolio two days later. Your work is precise and well detailed and those are not things I find easily."
"How did you find it."
"Your userna. Graphic_E. It was not difficult to find Ethan Cruxs from there."
Honest answer. Simple answer.
I told myself to stop looking for things that weren’t there.
"Before we get into the brief," she said, "I want to explain sothing. About the stream. About why the smile matters."
"You don’t owe an explanation either."
"No. But I want to give you one anyway." She looked at the window briefly then back at .
"I was fifteen when my parents’ marriage started falling apart.
My mother and father were still in the sa house, still at the sa dinner table.
They had just stopped existing in the sa world."
They fought every single day , it was too much for ..
To see two people you love just drift apart right before your eyes
I tried to say sothing but it didn’t work
"I was scrolling through my phone one night and I found a strear. "HumiUmi Star". Do you know her?"
Sothing moved in my mory. "Yeah. I know her."
Raina looked at with mild surprise. "Really."
"I used to watch her when I was starting out.
She did those late night streams where she drew while she talked.
I was teaching myself digital illustration at the ti." I paused.
"She was not the reason I went into design professionally but she had a sothing to do with it .
Raina was quiet for a mont.
Sothing in her expression shifted, subtle enough that I almost missed it.
"She saved my life," she said simply.
" I an it literally.
"Those streams were the only place I felt like soone actually gets .
"Her videos were honest and warm and she made feel less alone during the period when I felt most alone." She paused.
"When I ca out the other side I knew I wanted to do what she did.
"I wanted to be there for soone else the way she had been there for ."
The room was quiet.
"That is why the smile does not drop," she said.
"Because I do not know who is on the other side of the screen.
"I do not know if they are fifteen and sitting in a house that is quietly falling apart.
"I cannot afford to let it drop."
I looked at her for a mont.
And just like that the woman who had been an abstract source of unease for 5 days beca a person.
A real one.
I picked up my pen.
"Okay," I said. "Let’s talk about the work."
She had clear ideas. That was imdiately obvious.
"The current brand system is three years old," she said.
She had pulled out a printed reference sheet, her current logo, color palette, typography set, overlay layouts.
Professional. She had done this before.
"It served the early audience well but the channel has grown past it.
The visual language feels juvenile now and I want it to evolve without losing the warmth that built the community."
I looked at the current logo. Bubbly font, heavy on the pink, the heart in the na rendered in a gradient that had been popular three years ago .
"Full identity overhaul," I said.
"New logo mark, refined color palette, updated type system. We would also rebuild your overlay suite from scratch to match the new direction. Lower thirds, alerts, scene transitions, the whole broadcast package."
"Yes. And the rchandise templates.
I have a drop scheduled in four months and I want the new identity locked before we go to production."
I wrote that down.
"Four months is workable if we lock the creative direction in the first two weeks.
"I would need your brand questionnaire completed before our next eting, the docunt Brian’s team will send over covers audience demographics, brand values, visual references. The more specific you are the faster we move."
"Understood."
"One more thing." I looked up.
"You ntioned avatar redesign."
She set her pen down.
"Yes. This is important to ."
"Walk through it."
"The current avatar reads as a cartoon. The expressions are limited, happy, surprised, laughing. There is no nuance in the face." She paused.
"I want people to be able to tell when she is tired. When sothing genuinely makes her laugh versus when she is performing a laugh. I want the face to have range."
I wrote quickly. Avatar redesign. Expanded expression library. Emotional legibility. Reduce cartoon affect, increase realism without losing brand warmth.
That was more kuro departnt I thought
"We can do that," I said.
"It would be a separate deliverable from the brand system but they would need to be developed in parallel so the visual language stays consistent across both. Sa color story, sa energy. The avatar should feel like she belongs inside the new identity."
"Exactly." Sothing in her face settled, like I had said the right thing.
"Yes we can make that work," I said.
"It will an a few extra sessions to align on the character direction but that is standard for creator clients."
She nodded.
We went through the rest of the scope. Asset library, social templates, YouTube thumbnail system, brand usage guidelines. She asked intelligent questions. She knew what she wanted and could articulate it clearly which made my job easier by half.
At 3:47 PM I slid the contract across the table.
"Standard agency agreent," I said.
"Scope of work is attached as exhibit A, paynt schedule is net thirty on milestone delivery, you retain full ownership of all final deliverables upon completion of paynt."
She read it. The whole thing. Not quickly. Page by page.
Then she picked up the pen and signed at the bottom with a clean, unhurried signature.

I countersigned on behalf of the agency and slid my copy back into the folder.
"I will send the brand questionnaire by end of week," she said.
"We will schedule the first creative review once I have it."
She stood. I stood. We shook hands again.
As the assistant walked back through the hallway I looked at the prints on the wall again. The avatar in her different poses. The signed rchandise art. The photograph at the end, the woman with her back to cara watching the monitor.
I knew now that the woman in the photograph was Raina.
I thought to my self well that went well , she seed normal , also very impressive
I had nothing to be worried about
By 4: 01PM a cab pulled away from Opalvine Court .
I got ho by 5 :15 PM ..made dinner and went over the drafts once more
Then went to sleep .
