"Second Young Miss is awake."
Madam was delighted and, ignoring her mother-in-law, imdiately walked into the inner room.
Sure enough, she saw that Song Ruqi had opened her eyes in a daze. Her face, unlike an hour ago, was no longer flushed but sowhat pale.
"Mother?" As soon as Song Ruqi saw her mother, her lips trembled. She wanted to move but felt too weak, and tears slid down her cheeks in grievance.
"Don’t move, you’re still ill." Madam sat by the bed’s edge and reached out to feel her forehead. Seeing it was no longer hot, she couldn’t help but rejoice.
The redy advised by her mother-in-law was indeed effective.
"Quickly bring the dicine for the Second Young Miss," Madam instructed the attendants.
Song Ruqi had already been helped by the nurse to lean against the pillow, looking sickly with tears continuously falling.
"Don’t cry, your tears break my heart. Why are you crying?" Madam, distressed, took a handkerchief to personally wipe her tears.
"Mother, I just want to ask you one thing. Am I adopted?" Song Ruqi asked hoarsely.
Her throat hurt and was raspy, but even so, she had to ask clearly, or she wouldn’t be at ease.
If she weren’t so befuddled by her sickness, Madam would have scolded her. What kind of foolish question was that?
"I think you’re confused by your illness. What adoption? That’s an insult to your mother," Madam chided as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. "Stop overthinking. Be a good girl and take your dicine, rest well, and don’t go imagining nonsensical things all night."
Song Ruqi wanted to say more but was silenced by her mother. Song Ci also walked in.
"Is she more clear-headed?" Song Ci ca over and looked at the girl’s haggard face, not as vibrant as usual, feeling a pang of heartache.
"She’s still confused," Madam replied for her daughter, and then said to Song Ruqi, "Thankfully, your grandmother used a traditional redy to reduce your fever, otherwise, you wouldn’t even be able to speak now."
Song Ruqi glanced at Song Ci and lowered her head despondently.
The nursemaids brought in the dicine, fussing about to help Song Ruqi drink it. They then prepared a warm bath, changed the bedding, and as the dicine took effect, Song Ruqi felt weak and didn’t have the energy to talk or get upset, eventually falling into a deep sleep. Song Ci then returned to Chunhui Hall.
Lady Jiang and Lady Lu ca to pay their respects. They had heard of Song Ruqi’s illness and, after completing the tasks given by Madam, ca to visit.
"The child was befuddled by the fever, but she has just taken her dicine and fallen asleep. It’s kind of you to co."
"Sister-in-law, Qi’er’s health has always been well managed by you. How did she suddenly fall ill?" Lady Jiang asked after checking on the sleeping Song Ruqi and stepping out.
Madam’s eyes flickered slightly, "This child caught a chill from indulging in the coolness at night. The other day, she was even asking for an ice basin."
"It isn’t even that hot yet; an ice basin? Sister-in-law, you shouldn’t indulge her. A young lady being too fond of coolness isn’t good for her health," Lady Jiang quickly said.
"Of course."
Lady Lu seed a bit peculiar, but wisely she asked nothing, simply offering a few words of concern and asking Madam to call on her if assistance was needed.
Madam said, "This child becos sowhat delicate when sick, so I really need to keep an eye on her. As for the North Garden, it’s intended to be prepared for when Duke Cheng’en visits our residence. Please, both of you sisters-in-law, help to check how the upkeep is going over the next few days."
"Rest assured, sister-in-law, we will definitely oversee it," Lady Jiang agreed readily.
