Jane Chandler was in disbelief. It was the first ti she had ever heard her grandson speak so fluently, and yet, it was only to defend Naomi Kenway. She clutched her chest with one hand and sank back into her chair, trembling.

A nearby servant rushed to steady her, but she waved them away. Her gaze, fixed on Naomi Kenway, was as sharp as daggers. "How many wicked things has your mother taught you in private? You’re usually so quiet, but the mont you open your mouth, it’s to curse at !"

"Mommy didn’t teach ! Grandma is an! I don’t like Grandma, and I don’t want to talk to Grandma!" Ian Shaw shook his head vigorously, his face a mask of defiance.

Furious, Jane Chandler slamd her hand on the table, her voice trembling. "Fine! Just fine! It seems you two, mother and son, are plotting to anger to death! He’s my only grandson, and you, Naomi Kenway, are deliberately turning him against . How could there be such a venomous woman like you? My son must have had the worst luck for eight lifetis to have married you!"

As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, and she took out a handkerchief to dab at the corners.

The others in the room all rushed to console her.

Naomi Kenway frowned slightly. ’Jane Chandler’s tears have undoubtedly pushed into the eye of the storm. Now, whether I’m right or wrong, I’ll be seen as the one at fault, simply because I’m her junior.’

The next second, an even louder cry erupted, completely drowning out Jane Chandler’s sobs. Ian had burst into a full-blown wail.

This startled Naomi Kenway, who quickly pulled her son into her arms to soothe him. But as she looked down, she saw Ian give her a subtle wink. Naomi understood instantly. ’This is his way of protecting .’

Jane Chandler froze. "What are you crying for? I wasn’t scolding you."

As the Shaw Family’s only grandson, and only four years old at that, Ian’s crying tugged at everyone’s heartstrings. The others also hurried over to try and comfort him.

Ian cried until he was breathless, muttering, "an grandma..."

Jane Chandler now understood: her grandson couldn’t bear to watch her scold his mother. The anger in her heart flared even hotter, but she couldn’t bring herself to reprimand Ian Shaw in front of so many people.

A relative from a side branch of the family tried to persuade her. "He’s just a child; he can’t stand to hear soone scold his mother. Jane, just comfort him a little. Oh, dear, look how heartbreaking his crying is."

Jane Chandler’s eyes widened. "He’s siding with his mother to curse at , and you expect to lower myself and comfort him? Dream on!"

The force in Jane’s tone startled the relative. "Ian is just a child. He’s your own grandson."

"I don’t have a grandson who goes around calling ’an grandma’!"

Ian Shaw’s incessant crying soon drew Susan Hughes down from upstairs. Leaning on a cane and supported by a servant, she made her way down.

"Mother?" Jane Chandler was stunned.

Susan Hughes walked over to Naomi Kenway and quickly took out a handkerchief to wipe away Ian’s tears, her voice filled with heartache. "Oh, my dear, who made our Ian cry? Tell Great-Grandma. Great-Grandma will back you up!"

Ian Shaw’s sobs subsided into a hiccup. "Grandma’s a bad guy! Grandma yelled at Mommy and , and she wanted to have people throw us out!"

He wrapped his arms around Susan Hughes’s neck, his big, watery eyes like glistening crystals. "Great-Grandma, I’m so scared."

Feeling the cool dampness of Ian’s tears on her neck, Susan Hughes’s heart ached for him. The older one gets, the more one dotes on children, and she was no exception.

Susan Hughes turned slightly, her gaze on Jane Chandler filled with stern authority. "Jane Chandler, you’re a grandmother. How can you scold a child like that?"

She was usually kind and gentle, but her anger, once roused, was overwhelming.

Jane Chandler was furious as well. ’I can’t believe Naomi Kenway coached Ian on what to say! My own grandson is slandering !’ "I never told anyone to throw them out!" she insisted.

"Would a child lie about that?" Susan Hughes’s face grew cold. "If you think planning the birthday banquet is too much trouble, then don’t do it. Just stop finding ways to make miserable!"

"Mother, I didn’t..." Jane Chandler turned desperately to the servant beside her. "You were here just now. You tell her, did I or did I not say to throw them out?"

"Enough!" Susan Hughes snapped. "You’re getting more and more outrageous!" She sighed, a hint of helplessness in her expression. "How many tis have I told you? Ian is your grandson, not your enemy. You must not be harsh with him, no matter what. Besides... our children will make their own way in life. You shouldn’t ddle in what doesn’t concern you."

"I..." Jane Chandler was at a loss for words. "Mother, I..."

’She didn’t think she was in the wrong. Given Ian’s current condition, they couldn’t possibly hand the massive Shaw Group over to him. What was so wrong with wanting Ethan Shaw and Naomi Kenway to divorce so he could remarry and have another child? She was only thinking of the entire Shaw Family’s future.’

At Susan Hughes’s instruction, a servant brought over Ian’s favorite snacks and pastries. Susan Hughes handed him a piece, her dry, wrinkled hand gently stroking his cheek.

"Ian, these are all your favorites. Great-Grandma has already taught the person who bullied you a lesson. Look, your eyes are all red. Don’t cry any more of those precious tears; it’s breaking Great-Grandma’s heart."

Ian Shaw nodded obediently. He had stopped crying.

With the matter resolved, Susan Hughes allowed the servant to help her back upstairs. She paused as she set foot on the staircase. "Ian, if anyone wrongs you again, you call for Great-Grandma."

But her eyes were fixed on Jane Chandler.

After Susan Hughes left, a brief silence fell over the group at the table.

Soone asked, "Shall we continue discussing the plans for the banquet?"

Jane Chandler was in no mood. She glared at Naomi Kenway, forced to swallow her anger because of what Susan Hughes had said, though she still felt deeply wronged. "Naomi Kenway, what are your thoughts on this banquet? We can’t lose face, but we also have to make *your* grandmother happy."

Naomi Kenway nodded lightly. "I’ll follow your lead."

"Follow my lead?" Jane said sarcastically. "I can hardly order you around now. I wouldn’t want to get another lecture from *your* grandmother." She slowly picked up a cup of tea, her movents elegant. "In my opinion, we don’t need to discuss this any further. You will be in charge of this birthday banquet, Naomi Kenway."

Before Naomi Kenway could reply, she added, "I don’t ddle with your dabbling in the entertainnt industry, but at a critical ti like this, you need to contribute to the family. Since *your* grandmother is so fond of you, I’m sure she’ll love a banquet that you’ve planned."

Soone interjected with concern, "Nicole has never planned a birthday banquet before, has she? This..."

Jane Chandler cut in, "She cos from a wealthy family. Don’t tell she can’t even plan a banquet."

Jane Chandler smiled again. "Besides, my daughter-in-law is very capable. Perhaps she’ll give us a ’big surprise.’" Her gaze fell on Naomi Kenway. "What do you say?"

Naomi Kenway smiled, though her voice was tinged with ice. "Do I have a choice? Since you’ve entrusted with this task, I promise I won’t let you down."

Jane Chandler declared the discussion over and left, supported by a servant.
