Nathaniel Lynch frowned, thinking. If he recalled correctly, Naomi Kenway’s husband was a Shaw—Ethan Shaw.

"What? Bro, you know that nouveau riche?" Nathaniel Lynch sneered, then started ranting. "I was on a show with him before. The guy’s such a poser, always acting all high and mighty. And that watch on his wrist? Who knows if it was real, but I bet it was fake. Judging by how whipped he looks, he can’t be that rich. Seriously, what a joke. Showing up to a program wearing a fake watch... He’s got so nerve."

Nathaniel Lynch frowned. "Why didn’t I expose him right then and there? His fake watch was so convincing, it even fooled at first."

"That’s enough." His older brother’s voice, tinged with a rare severity, cut him off. "You didn’t actually offend the man, did you? Have you forgotten who Ethan Shaw is?"

Hearing the stern voice on the other end, Nathaniel Lynch instinctively sat up straight. Whenever he’d ssed up in the past, his older brother would use this exact tone to lecture him.

"I don’t give a damn which ’Shaw’ or which ’Ethan’ he is. He crossed , so it’s his own damn fault. And his wife is a total pain in the ass, too." Thinking of his recent spat with Renee Jennings, his expression turned even colder. "I wasn’t planning to do anything to them, but she just had to stick her nose where it didn’t belong. You provoke , you pay the price. Did she really think I wouldn’t lose my temper?!"

When Nathaniel Lynch finished, he noticed his brother on the other end was silent and couldn’t help but ask,

"Bro? You there? Is the connection bad?"

His brother sighed on the other end of the line. "You really are a blockhead," he scolded. "How can you be so clueless when it cos to sothing this important?!"

Nathaniel was completely baffled by the rebuke. "What did I do? Bro, why are you saying that?"

"The most prominent Shaw Family in Veridia... The Shaw Family your sister-in-law and I visit with gifts every single year... You really have no recollection of them at all?"

A sense of dread began to creep into Nathaniel Lynch’s heart.

THUD. Nathaniel Lynch slid right out of his chair. The director beside him gasped and rushed to help him back up. "Best Actor Lynch, are you okay? Is it your leg? Should I get a doctor?"

Nathaniel Lynch waved him away, indicating he was fine. He clutched his phone in disbelief, his heart pounding so hard it felt like it was about to hamr its way out of his chest.

Still reeling, Nathaniel shakily raised the phone to his ear. His voice was faint. "Bro..."

"I just heard a loud bang. What was that? Nathaniel, are you alright?"

Nathaniel Lynch muttered to himself, "’Jonathan Shaw... So that was Ethan Shaw. That was *the* Ethan Shaw...’"

Nathaniel Lynch gritted his teeth, his mind reeling with shock and panic. He was far from unfamiliar with the na Ethan Shaw; in fact, it was legendary. A junior, several years younger than him, who had demonstrated astonishing talent and drive in the business world, to the point of utterly crushing even his own brilliant older brother.
