"Are you hungry?" As Renee Jennings asked this, she had already taken out her phone to search for what sliders eat.
Slider began its woeful complaint. "My people, who understands my pain? This little turtle hasn’t eaten in three days!"
Renee Jennings was amused by its tone, her eyes curving into crescents as she smiled.
When Slider heard her still laughing, it was instantly displeased. "Folks, this two-legged beast heard that this little turtle hasn’t eaten in three days, and it’s actually laughing at !"
"Where did you get the idea that I was laughing at you?" Renee Jennings composed herself and said seriously, "And I just told you, don’t call a two-legged beast."
Slider: "Then what’s your na?"
"Renee Jennings."
"Alright."
"What do you want to eat?"
Slider: "Two-legged beast, are you treating ?"
Renee Jennings: "..."
’Never mind. I’m not treating you.’
’I haven’t heard a single pleasant thing from you.’
Seeing her sudden silence, Slider said dejectedly, "Folks, you have no idea. This two-legged beast deceived ."
Renee Jennings frowned. "You’re the one who deceived first."
Kyle Morgan, holding his pen, looked completely lost. "Miss Jennings, what did the turtle say? I need you to translate so I can take it down."
Renee Jennings: "No need to record anything yet. I haven’t started questioning it."
"Okay." Kyle Morgan nodded.
Slider stretched its neck out to look at her and asked in confusion, "Two-legged beast, when did this little turtle ever deceive you?"
Renee Jennings put on an angry face. "You clearly promised not to call a two-legged beast."
"I’m sorry," Slider apologized. "This little turtle has a bad mory and forgot."
Renee Jennings: "..."
’Its mory is this bad? Can I really expect it to provide any useful information?’
Slider sighed a long sigh again. "This little turtle hasn’t eaten in three days. I have no strength and no mory."
"Is your mory bad because you’re hungry?" Renee Jennings’s eyes lit up, and she quickly asked, "Then what do you want to eat?"
Slider tried hard to open its eyes wider and asked expectantly, "Can I have anything I want?"
Renee Jennings: "You can."
"Then this little turtle wants pork, shrimp, lamb, rice..."
Slider listed off a pile of food. Renee Jennings turned her head to look at Kyle Morgan. "Mr. Morgan, could you help prepare so food? Slider hasn’t eaten in three days and needs a full stomach before it can provide any intel."
"Is that so?" Kyle Morgan stood up. "What should I get? I’ll have a colleague go buy it."
Renee Jennings: "Rice, pork, shrimp..."
"Got it." Kyle Morgan nodded and walked out of the conference room.
Renee Jennings looked at Slider again. "Soone’s gone to buy it."
"Folks, how can there be such a good two-legged..."
"What did you say?"
Slider promptly shut its mouth. "This little turtle didn’t say anything."
"Good, you know what’s good for you," Renee Jennings huffed.
Twenty minutes later, Slider, which had claid to be starving for three days, finally got to eat.
By the ti it finished, it was lunchti for Renee Jennings as well.
There was a knock on the conference room door, and Henry Stark pushed it open, holding two lunch boxes.
"Ti to eat!" Kyle Morgan said with a grin.
Henry Stark walked over to Renee Jennings, placed the two lunch boxes on the table, and said softly, "Miss Jennings, let’s eat first."
"Thank you, Captain Stark." Renee Jennings nodded.
"What’s for lunch today?" Kyle Morgan also leaned in, assuming one of the boxes was for him.
Seeing this, Henry Stark gave him a cool reminder, "Go look for yourself outside."
Kyle Morgan blinked, a sense of grievance welling up in his heart. "Boss, you didn’t get one for ?"
Henry Stark: "I didn’t know what you wanted to eat. Go out and pick for yourself."
"Oh, so that’s how it is." Kyle Morgan nodded, but as he walked out of the conference room, he felt like sothing wasn’t quite right.
’The boss doesn’t know what I want to eat, but he knows what Miss Jennings wants to eat? Wait, is the boss closer to Miss Jennings than he is to ?’
Renee Jennings lifted the lid of her lunch box, and the rich aroma of at wafted out. Inside lay steaming braised pork ribs, chicken braised with chestnuts, as well as shrimp and broccoli.
The man’s deep, pleasant voice sounded slowly. "I didn’t know what Miss Jennings likes to eat, so I just picked the sa as mine. If you don’t like it, you can get a different one."
"I won’t." Renee Jennings looked up to et his gaze and said with a light laugh, "I like this very much."
A faint smile touched Henry Stark’s lips. "That’s good."
He unwrapped the disposable chopsticks, rubbed the ends together gently, and handed them to her.
"Thank you, Captain Stark," Renee Jennings said quickly.
Henry Stark’s dark brows arched slightly. "Just call Henry Stark from now on. No need to always be so formal with ’Captain Stark’."
"Alright." Renee Jennings agreed readily. "Then you can call by my na from now on, too."
"Okay." A slight curve ford on the man’s thin lips, and he seed to be in a very good mood.
However, this harmonious atmosphere was shattered by the boisterous Kyle Morgan.
"I’m here, I’m here!" He walked in casually, carrying his lunch box, and plopped down in the seat between Henry Stark and Renee Jennings.
The smile on Henry Stark’s face vanished with Kyle Morgan’s arrival.
Kyle Morgan glanced at the food in Renee Jennings’s lunch box and said with envy, "Ah, you have braised pork ribs! They were all out when I went to get mine."
Hearing this, Renee Jennings smiled and asked, "Do you want so? Go ahead and take it, I haven’t touched them yet."
"Oh, I couldn’t possibly!" Though Kyle Morgan said he couldn’t, his chopsticks were already slowly inching forward.
Henry Stark’s eyes darkened, and his brows slowly knitted together.
Kyle Morgan’s chopsticks were halfway there when they were intercepted by another pair.
He followed the chopsticks with his eyes, blinked, and reminded him, "Boss, the food’s in front of you. These are my chopsticks. You’ve grabbed the wrong thing."
"Of course I know these are your chopsticks." Henry Stark glared at him, displeased, though his tone was flat. "If you want ribs, take them from my container."
"Thanks, Boss!" Kyle Morgan grinned and snatched two pieces of ribs from his lunch box.
After lunch, Renee Jennings went to the turtle tank and found Slider, well-fed and content, dozing off.
She chuckled softly. "You sure know how to enjoy life. A nap right after you eat."
Slider opened its eyes to look at her. "This little turtle wasn’t sleeping."
"Perfect, then." Renee Jennings pulled over a stool and sat down, a serious look appearing on her delicate features. "Do you know Eileen Coleman?"
Slider: "Who?"
Renee Jennings thought for a mont, then took out her phone, found a photo from Eileen Coleman’s social dia feed, and showed it to the turtle. "Do you recognize this human?"
Slider strained to open its eyes wide. After staring at the photo for a mont, it nodded. "This little turtle knows her. She’s the one who starved for three days! She’s a terrible two-legged beast."
Renee Jennings continued to ask, "Then did you see her jump from the building yesterday morning?"
"No." Slider shook its head. "This little turtle was sleeping yesterday morning. This little turtle wasn’t paying attention to whether she jumped or not."
Renee Jennings frowned, a wave of disappointnt washing over her.
"Folks, you have no idea. The two-legged beast Renee Jennings is ignoring this little turtle," Slider cried out again.
Renee Jennings: "..."
She sighed softly and tried a different approach. "Did you see any suspicious people looking for Eileen Coleman yesterday morning?"
