She turned her head and saw that ice-cold face of Suisui’s dad.
Sheng Yi only felt her whole body go numb.
"Chi Yu... heh, actually it’s not what you think you saw, heh..." She was forced to let out a witch-like dry cackle that even she couldn’t stand.
Then she hurried to explain to him, "You have to believe , I really did look after Suisui properly, but... accidents, you know, they’re just like surprises, they ambush you out of nowhere."
Chi Yu’s face was clearly very dark.
His breathing was a bit uneven too; he’d run all the way here, the others were still behind.
Just his luck.
He’d only just rushed over and saw the exact scene of Suisui falling into the field. When he got closer and saw Suisui in the field, covered in mud from head to toe, both little feet sunk into the muck—her clothes had probably been a cute pale pink, and now, well.
And that adorable little face had already turned into a muddy kitty-cat.
He found it funny in spite of himself, and at the sa ti thought how he should’ve run just a bit faster.
If he’d just been two steps quicker, he could’ve stopped this whole scene.
"Eat fish~"
"Feeties can’t move."
"Hug hug~"
Seeing the angry Chi Yu, Suisui was scared of being scolded and quickly put on a fawning smile.
When Suisui smiled, all the pent-up frustration in Chi Yu’s chest dissipated in an instant.
He answered with a "Mm," then said, "Stand right there, don’t move."
Suisui made an imperfect OK sign with her hand. "Okaaay~"
Huang also jumped up from the field, its muddy paw prints scratching at Chi Yu’s pant leg a few tis, leaving several plum-blossom marks. Chi Yu stayed completely unmoved; at a ti like this he actually wasn’t that scared of this dog!
He bent down, lifted his foot, took off his shoes and socks, rolled up his pant legs and stepped into the field.
He tested the mud with his left foot first. Standing nearby, Sheng Yi hastily reminded him, "An adult’s weight will sink a lot deeper, be careful."
As soon as she finished.
Chi Yu had already planted one foot down.
An adult’s weight did indeed sink much deeper.
But for Chi Yu it wasn’t a problem. With those long legs of his, just two steps and he was standing in front of Suisui. The distance wasn’t far, but if he’d stayed on the ridge he wouldn’t have been able to fish her out.
He slowly bent down. The little muddy-kitty face in front of him was grinning so wide her eyes were almost gone, and she obediently stretched both hands out toward him. "Eat fish, hug hug ~"
Just as Chi Yu was about to step in and scoop Suisui up, Huang jumped back down again.
It barreled over and started licking him all over the place.
Chi Yu saw dog drool already on his arm. He used one hand to push the dog away first, then quickly lifted Suisui up.
Because both of Suisui’s little feet were stuck in the mud, it took Chi Yu a bit of effort to pull her up. He didn’t care whether his clothes would be dirtied by her mud-covered little feet, but the two little footprints left in the field were really quite deep.
Once Suisui was hoisted up, her two little arms wrapped securely around Chi Yu’s neck, and her mud-sared feet kicked and flailed, saring his clothes all over with mud.
Chi Yu put on a show of anger. "Gu Suisui!"
The little girl showed her white teeth. "Heehee~"
"You think that just because you’ve got a cute smile you can get away with anything, huh!" Chi Yu still kept a straight face. "I’m telling you, this is not over. When we get back you’re going to stand in the corner and reflect! And write the twenty-six English letters ten tis!"
As soon as he said that.
The second before she’d been all grins and giggles; the next second, Suisui’s little face collapsed and she couldn’t smile at all anymore.
She pouted. "I don’t like eating fish anymore!"
Chi Yu: "Then you can eat shrimp!"
Suisui turned her head away. "Hmph!"
Chi Yu’s lips curved in a smile as he stepped out of the field with Suisui in his arms, listening to the little girl’s angry hums. "You little kitty-cat, we’ve spoiled you way too much on a daily basis!"
"I’m not seeing it!"
The one talking was Sheng Yi.
Seeing Chi Yu carry Suisui up out of the field, the big rock in her heart finally dropped a little. But listening to the father-daughter banter, she felt amused and slightly indignant on Suisui’s behalf.
So she jabbed back at him, not too lightly and not too harshly, "Most of the ti it’s Yuanyuan who looks after Suisui. If anyone’s spoiling her, it’s Yuanyuan. The way you’re talking makes it sound like you’re the one who spoils her all the ti."
Chi Yu looked at the unconvinced Sheng Yi. "So what, you want to argue with about how Yuanyuan entrusted my daughter to you, and you managed to get her dumped into a field?"
Sheng Yi was instantly at a loss for words!
Not because she couldn’t out-argue Chi Yu, but because, well, the way he put it... that really was what happened.
"I didn’t do it on purpose, really." She pressed her palms together and pleaded, "I’m begging you, when you tattle later, be rciful with that mouth of yours."
Chi Yu let out a soft snort. "Depends on my mood."
Leaving his shoes and socks for now, Chi Yu planned to carry Suisui back to the village chief’s house first. Just thinking that Gu Yuan was on her way already made him too impatient to wait to see her.
