Du Heng rolled his eyes and tapped Wu Shengnan’s forehead with the invitation. "Are you being silly? Is this about money? It’s a question of appropriateness!"
Wu Shengnan said aggrievedly, "What’s so inappropriate? The money you earned is all legal inco; it can withstand any scrutiny. What’s wrong with spending our own money?"
"Yes, there’s nothing wrong with spending our own money," Du Heng said, exasperated. "But shouldn’t you consider our identities and your father’s situation? The money itself isn’t the issue, but you can’t stop people from getting jealous or scheming. Rember what your father taught last ti: ’Gossip is a fearful thing.’"
Having been tapped on the head, Wu Shengnan glared at Du Heng resentfully. "Talk properly! Why did you hit ?"
"Was that hitting? Don’t falsely accuse , okay?" Du Heng said, quite exasperated.
Wu Shengnan pouted at Du Heng, huffed, then conceded, "Alright, that one’s too high-profile. Aren’t there several others? Pick one of those."
Wu Shengnan had barely finished speaking when Du Heng picked up another invitation, one assembled entirely from thin wooden slats. "Look at this one. Although I don’t know what it’s made of, just by looking at its all-wood construction and slling the faint fragrance, anyone with a working brain knows this thing isn’t cheap. If soone bothered to search online, do you think it would be any different from the gold-trimd one?" After speaking, he set this one aside too.
Du Heng’s actions made Wu Shengnan pout again. "Those two were my favorites, and you’ve rejected both of them! I’m starting to think you’re doing this on purpose."
Du Heng glanced at the other invitations in his hand. The remaining ones looked luxurious but were made of paper and thus not quite as ostentatious. He placed them back in Wu Shengnan’s hands. "Just pick one from these."
Then, looking at her seriously, he said, "Don’t say I’m doing it on purpose. Why don’t you take these two invitations to your father and let him help you choose one?"
Wu Shengnan ignored Du Heng, just staring straight at him.
Of course, Du Heng understood her behavior was rely to express her unhappiness. This unhappiness stemd from not being able to arrange her wedding as she wished; he was sure there were no other reasons.
Du Heng slowly moved closer to Wu Shengnan, gently pulling her into his embrace. "Baby, don’t be angry," he said softly. "Invitations are just for show. Their main purpose is to inform friends and family and to receive their blessings.
"Let’s not even talk about whether they’re expensive. If you use such extravagant materials, what are your friends and relatives supposed to do when they receive them?
"Throw them away? That would be a pity. Keep them? They’re useless. Isn’t that just causing trouble for others?"
Wu Shengnan leaned against Du Heng. "But I just like them."
"If you like them, then keep one of each kind for yourself. We can write them out for ourselves and then put them away for us to look at."
Wu Shengnan leaned quietly for a while, then nodded lightly. After a mont’s hesitation, she said, "Honey, I have sothing to tell you."
"Go on."
"I think... I might be pregnant."
Du Heng stiffened completely. His hands imdiately helped Wu Shengnan sit up from his embrace, and he stared intently at her. "Are you serious?"
Wu Shengnan hesitated again for a mont. "I think so. My period is already several days late."
Du Heng let out a soft breath. He had Wu Shengnan sit properly, then gently took her wrist.
He was extrely nervous. As he focused on performing the pulse diagnosis, he felt his fingers trembling. His heart pounded with extraordinary force; he could even hear it—POUND, POUND, POUND.
Wu Shengnan was equally nervous, watching Du Heng intently as he perford the pulse diagnosis. She waited for a mont, and seeing he wasn’t stopping, she hesitantly began, "Honey, I’m not..."
However, her voice was too quiet. Du Heng, completely absorbed in the pulse diagnosis, didn’t hear her. Once the diagnosis confird it, he was already hugging Wu Shengnan excitedly. "Baby, I’m going to be a father!"
"Oh." Wu Shengnan swallowed the rest of her words. Listening to Du Heng’s excited tone, she gently patted his back.
「Early the next morning,」 Du Heng refused to let Wu Shengnan drive to work. Instead, he drove her to her workplace himself. Before leaving, he said sowhat imperiously, "No overti tonight. Wait for at your workplace when you’re done, and I’ll pick you up."
Wu Shengnan pouted and huffed, "HMPH! Am I only valuable now because I’m carrying a ’valuable child’?"
Du Heng laughed heartily. As he sped off in the car, his voice drifted back from the window, "You’re both precious! You’re number one, the baby’s number two, and I’m number three."
Watching Du Heng drive away, Wu Shengnan chuckled softly and then turned into her workplace.
As for the words she hadn’t finished saying last night, she didn’t bring them up again.
After driving off, Du Heng didn’t head straight to the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital; instead, he went to the Provincial First Hospital.
Truthfully, he was sowhat reluctant to go there. From yesterday until now, Director Ge and his team hadn’t made a single call to Du Heng, nor had they communicated with him at all about the child’s latest situation.
