"Why stay cooped up? Let’s all go out, have so fun, and relax. It’ll be good preparation for our non-stop Labor Day."
Hearing this, Gao Qin felt her enthusiasm wane.
In theory, the Obstetrics Departnt at the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital should have been the best departnt. However, the reality was the opposite. It was now one of the worst front-line departnts, only slightly better than the Costic Departnt. The root of the problem lay with the current situation, and Lu Guangying was at the center of it.
"Is Deputy Dean Lu going too?"
"Of course she’s going."
Gao Qin shook her head firmly. If it were just two or three people going for a al to unwind, that would be fine. But with more people, complications were bound to arise. She had no desire to get involved.
"You all go ahead. I still have monthly paynts on three houses to make; I can’t skip work at the clinic." After saying this and checking the ti once more, she quickly grabbed her bag and left.
As night fell, the entire hospital gradually sank into silence. Jiang Feng, the on-duty doctor in the Obstetrics Departnt, was in the rest room eating Instant Noodles and watching a drama.
After finishing the latest episode of the series and her Instant Noodles, she saw it was eleven o’clock. Jiang Feng cleared away the Instant Noodles container and prepared to get ready for bed. It had been years since she was last called out in the middle of the night during a shift. On-duty shifts had rely beco a change of sleeping location for her.
But just as she took her shoes off, the door to the rest room was pushed open. "Doctor Jiang, the woman in Bed 4 is having contractions."
Jiang Feng acknowledged with an "oh." It was rare for sothing like this to happen on her shift. Still, since it had occurred during her duty week, she just had to deal with it. She put her shoes back on and stepped out.
Upon reaching the hospital room, she saw that the woman was indeed in labor; her cervix was already dilating. "Co on, let’s go to the delivery room and wait," she said, then turned to the woman’s husband. "Where is the delivery bag? Hand it to ."
The husband, flustered, handed her the items. "Doctor, how long do you think this will take?"
"I can’t say for sure, but your wife’s cervix has already dilated, so it should be soon." She examined the delivery bag and added, "This won’t do. Go down to the convenience store on the first floor and buy so chocolate and Snickers. A woman in childbirth needs to replenish her energy."
"Okay, okay, I’ll go right now."
"When you get back, ring the doorbell by the delivery room entrance. One of our nurses will co out to get them."
Everyone sprang into action. Doctors, midwives, and nurses all entered the delivery room. The husband hurried off to buy the items, and on the way, he also called his mother and his mother-in-law.
Four and a half hours later, around 3 AM, the area in front of the once quiet delivery room door suddenly teed with people. Doctors and nurses, one after another, entered the delivery room. Among them were several male doctors, in addition to the female ones.
Inside the delivery room, a group of people worked with tense urgency.
"The patient’s heartbeat is returning!"
"Heart rate is 40, pulse is barely palpable!"
"Doctor Jiang, call your Director right away! We’ve never encountered a situation like this!"
"Exactly! There was no hemorrhage, no complications. The child had just been delivered when the mother fainted. We can’t determine the cause."
Jiang Feng felt a surge of panic. The woman in childbirth had shown no other adverse reactions; her heartbeat just vanished.
"The Director isn’t answering."
"What about your Deputy Directors? Try calling them!"
"One isn’t answering, and for the other, her husband answered and said she’s drunk."
"Then what do we do?"
"Call Deputy Dean Lu! She’s also from the Obstetrics Departnt!"
"No one’s picking up."
Everyone was stunned. At such a critical mont, not a single one of them could be reached.
Just then, soone shouted, "Stop standing around dumbfounded! Quickly, call the Dean! I’ll call our departnt Director too!"
