"Trick ?"
Du Heng suddenly burst out laughing.
Wu Shengnan didn't understand. "Even close brothers keep clear accounts. It's not as if you and this Lawyer Zhou share so profound, life-altering connection, right? Do you trust her that much?"
Du Heng reached out, fastened his seatbelt, and said, "Lawyer Zhou is a very dedicated lawyer. I trust her professional ethics."
"If professional ethics were so useful, there wouldn't be so many occupational cris," Wu Shengnan retorted disdainfully.
Du Heng's smile remained unchanged. "Let finish. Once you hear out, you'll understand why she'll uphold her professional ethics."
Wu Shengnan was a police officer and had seen plenty of the dark side of human nature. She was always cautious and suspicious of unfamiliar people. Especially with such a large sum of money changing hands, Du Heng seed so nonchalant. He didn't even look closely at the contract or the legal fee paynt. This made her feel more than a little worried.
Du Heng placed both hands on the steering wheel, his index finger tapping it gently. "Firstly, her own inco is quite high; she's unlikely to do sothing that would jeopardize her career. Secondly, she can distinguish between a long-term arrangent and a one-off deal. Thirdly, her husband is a public employee in a fairly senior position; she has to consider his career too. Fourthly, no matter how you look at it, I'm her benefactor, and she doesn't strike as an ungrateful person. Fifthly, she has a child now, barely a month old. And sixthly, did you forget about yourself? I'm sure she's thoroughly investigated who you are. Even if she had ten tis the nerve, she wouldn't dare pocket *your* money."
Upon hearing this last reason, Wu Shengnan rolled her eyes at Du Heng. "'My money?' What are you talking about? That's *your* money. Don't be ridiculous."
"Listen to yourself. We're about to get married. There's no 'yours' or 'mine' anymore. What's mine is yours."
"You certainly have a way with words. How co I never noticed that before?"
Du Heng chuckled softly, sidestepping her remark. "With so many reasons not to worry about her trying to scam , why wouldn't I be a little more magnanimous and show so trust in her? Everyone understands this kind of thing implicitly. There's no need to be so petty about it. Besides, if I can get 8 million yuan today, then tomorrow, or next year, I might get 80 million yuan. Even if she did pocket this sum, what of it? This money is practically a windfall for anyway; it wasn't part of my plans to begin with."
Wu Shengnan rolled her eyes again, pointedly not looking at Du Heng's smug expression. She nestled into the sofa and fell silent.
Du Heng glanced at Wu Shengnan's expression and smiled, then slowly drove the car out of the parking space. "Sweetheart, let ask you sothing. Have you thought about how you want to spend the money?"
Wu Shengnan's eyes suddenly brightened, and her spirits lifted. But as she mulled it over, the light in her eyes dimd again, and she beca listless. "Nevermind. Let's just save it and let it earn interest. I don't have any ideas."
"How about I buy you a bag?" Du Heng suggested.
Wu Shengnan shook her head gently. "Nevermind. My job is what it is. A decent bag that gets the job done is fine. I don't need anything else; it would be too flashy."
"Then let's buy you so clothes. That should be fine, right?"
"I hardly go out on fieldwork these days, and I just wear a uniform to work. Buying those clothes would be a waste. Even when I do go out, I can't wear anything too expensive; the plainer, the better."
Wu Shengnan lost interest, clearly unhappy. When I didn't have this much money, I was quite happy. Now, with all this money and nowhere to spend it, it's just beco a source of frustration.
Du Heng had felt this way too, but seeing Wu Shengnan's frustrated expression, his own mood surprisingly lifted.
He chuckled softly and drove towards the restaurant where his brother-in-law had taken him last ti. Whether to spend money or not didn't matter; the most important thing was to find a nice place to eat.
Du Heng, noticing Wu Shengnan was still downcast, tried to change the subject to cheer her up. "By the way, sweetheart, our wedding isn't until October, but shouldn't we get our marriage certificate first?"
However, this didn't change Wu Shengnan's mood. She still looked dejected. "The date's already set. It's the 26th of this month."
Du Heng, puzzled, asked, "Why choose this day? Does it have any special significance?"
Wu Shengnan glanced at Du Heng and said despairingly, "You really aren't paying attention, are you? The 26th of this month is the Qixi Festival."
Du Heng sucked in a sharp breath and hesitated for a mont without speaking.
Seeing Du Heng's expression, Wu Shengnan's mood soured further. "What's that supposed to an? You don't want to get the certificate?"
"That's not it at all," Du Heng quickly explained. "I just feel that this date might not be very auspicious."
Wu Shengnan's eyes widened, and her voice rose. "The Qixi Festival, our own Valentine's Day! How could that not be auspicious? Explain yourself!"
Du Heng grimaced. "Look, the Qixi Festival commorates the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. They were separated by the Milky Way and could only et once a year. eting only once a year... isn't that basically what people nowadays call a 'widowed-style marriage'? Don't you think that's a bad on?"
Wu Shengnan's eyes widened. She'd never imagined the beautiful Qixi Festival could be interpreted this way in Du Heng's eyes! For a mont, her breathing grew rapid, and the frustration in her heart instantly flared into anger.
