Gunnar’s POV

I didn’t wait.

I didn’t think.

The mont the words left his mouth, my body moved on its own.

I rushed out of the room so fast that the door slamd hard against the wall behind . I could hear my Beta calling after , his footsteps rushing to keep up, but I didn’t slow down for him.

Nothing else mattered.

Not the pain in my chest. Not the strange heaviness in my body. Not even the confusion.

All I could hear was one thing.

"She’s at the verge of death."

"No..." I muttered under my breath as I ran.

"No, that’s not possible."

My steps were fast and uneven as I moved through the halls, pushing past anyone who got in my way without even looking at them.

People turned.

They stared.

So tried to speak.

I ignored all of them.

By the ti I got outside the pack grounds, I saw it.

A crowd.

People gathered in one place.

Watching.

Whispering.

My heart dropped.

"Move!" I barked loudly as I reached them.

They parted imdiately.

No one dared to stand in my way.

I pushed through them without hesitation, my eyes scanning the ground desperately until—

I saw her.

Carian.

She was lying there.

Still. Too fucking still.

Her clothes were stained with blood, the color dark against the fabric, spreading slowly, and for a second my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

"No..." I whispered.

I dropped to my knees beside her imdiately, pulling her into my arms.

"Carian!" I called out.

Her body felt weak. Her skin felt cold.

My hands trembled slightly as I held her closer.

"What happened?" I demanded, my voice shaking despite my effort to stay in control. "Carian, what happened?"

I shook her slightly."Talk to ," I said.

Her eyes fluttered weakly. She tried to speak. But nothing ca out at first.

My chest tightened painfully. "Stay with ," I said quickly. "You’re fine. You’re going to be fine. Do you hear ?"

Her lips moved again.

This ti—

Words ca out.

Weak. Barely audible.

"Please..."

I leaned closer.

"Carian," I said urgently.

"Please protect... our baby... Sumr..."

My heart stopped.

"No," I said imdiately. "Don’t talk like that. You’re not going anywhere."

But she didn’t respond and her body went still.

Her head dropped slightly against my arm.

"Carian?" I called.

No answer.

"Carian," I repeated, louder this ti.

Still nothing. Sothing inside cracked.

"No," I said again, shaking her slightly. "No, no, no—Carian, wake up!"

But she didn’t move. She didn’t breathe. And for a mont—

Everything felt unreal.

Like I was stuck in a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.

I couldn’t accept it. I refused to.

Without thinking, I stood up, carrying her in my arms.

"She’s fine," I muttered to myself as I moved. "She’s fine. She just needs help."

I pushed through the crowd again, ignoring the looks, the whispers, the silence that followed as I carried her away.

I didn’t stop until I reached my chambers.

I laid her carefully on the bed, my hands still trembling slightly as I adjusted her position.

"Get soone," I barked at no one in particular. "Call the healer. Now!"

But even as I said it—

Sothing inside already knew. She wasn’t coming back.

Just then, the door burst open again.

Caden and Cane rushed in, both of them looking tense.

"What happened?" Cane asked imdiately.

"What happened to her?" Caden added, stepping closer to the bed.

I didn’t answer. Because I didn’t know what to say. Because I didn’t know what happened.

I just stood there, staring at her.

"She was fine," I muttered. "She was just here... she just left..."

My voice sounded distant. Like it didn’t belong to .

Behind us, my Beta entered the room.

His presence was heavy. Serious.

I turned to him imdiately.

"You were with her," he said. "What happened?"

The Beta hesitated for a second. Then he spoke.

"She was attacked," he said.

My head snapped toward him.

"Attacked?" Cane repeated.

"Yes," he nodded. "A group of bandits."

My fists clenched instantly."What?" I asked, my voice low.

"She was protecting Sumr, they wanted to take Sumr" he continued. "They surrounded her. She fought back."

My chest tightened.

"And?" Caden pressed.

"She was stabbed," he said.

Silence filled the room.

"What?" Cane asked.

The Beta swallowed slightly. "Shw was stabbed on her hips," he replied. "Three tis with a dagger laced with aconite poison."

My vision darkened for a second.

"She didn’t stop fighting," he added. "Even after that. She made sure Sumr was safe."

I looked down at her again.

At her still body. And sothing inside twisted painfully.

Caden’s voice broke the silence.

"Why didn’t you stop them?" he asked sharply.

The Beta didn’t look away."I tried," he said.

That answer wasn’t enough.

"Tried?" Cane repeated, his tone rising.

"I engaged them," the Beta said. "I killed so of them."

"Then how did this happen?" Caden demanded.

The Beta’s expression changed slightly.

"There was sothing else," he said.

"What?" I asked.

He hesitated again. That alone made my chest tighten.

"What is it?" Caden pressed.

The Beta took a breath. "I recognized soone," he said.

My brows furrowed.

"Who?" Cane asked.

The Beta looked directly at us.

"At first, I didn’t believe it," he said slowly. "But one of them... before he died... he said sothing to ."

My heart started beating faster."What did he say?" I asked.

The Beta’s voice dropped. "He said it was planned," he replied.

The room went completely silent.

"Planned?" Caden repeated.

The Beta nodded."Yes," he said. "He said they were sent."

"By who?" Cane demanded.

The Beta didn’t answer imdiately.

Then he said it.

"By Sebastian."

Everything froze.

"What?" Caden said sharply.

"That’s impossible," Cane added imdiately.

But the Beta didn’t back down.

"I thought so too," he said. "But the man I caught... he was dying. He had no reason to lie."

My chest tightened."No," I said.

"That doesn’t make sense," Caden added.

"He said Sebastian ordered it," the Beta continued. "He said it was an assassination."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unbelievable.

"That’s a lie," Cane said." Why would Sebastian want to hurt Gunnar’s wife?"

"It could be," the Beta replied. "But there’s more."

We all looked at him.

"He knew details," he said. "Things only soone close would know."

My fists clenched tightly.

"He said it was ant to look like a random attack," the Beta added. "And that Sebastian would deny everything if it ca out."

My breathing beca uneven."No..." I muttered. "That’s not possible."

"Why would he do that?" Caden asked.

No one answered. Because no one knew.

But I couldn’t stand there any longer.

Sothing inside snapped completely.

Without another word, I turned and rushed out of the room.

"Gunnar!" Caden called after .

I didn’t stop. I didn’t look back.

There was only one place I was going.

Only one person I needed to see.

Sebastian and God’s have rcy I don’t have his head on a fucking plate.
