Riley’s POV

We stopped in front of a glowing circle, and I froze.

I rubbed my eyes hard because I honestly thought I was seeing things. The light was real. It was bright but not blinding, and it moved slowly like it was alive.

The circle was floating in the air, not touching the ground, and inside it was darkness that looked deep and endless.

"What the hell is this?" I asked.

"This is the Veil," Cane said calmly as if this was normal.

My heart started racing again. I did not like this at all. Nothing about this looked safe or normal.

"Wait," I said quickly. "You’re telling I have to step into that?"

But before anyone answered, a strong hand suddenly pushed forward.

I scread.

My body fell into the glowing circle, and for one second everything felt cold and heavy, like I was sinking into deep water. I tried to turn back. I reached out behind , desperate to grab sothing, anything.

But when my feet hit the ground and I spun around, the circle was gone.

Gone.

There was nothing there.

"No!" I shouted, panic exploding inside . "Caden! Cane!"

My voice sounded strange, like it did not travel far. The sound felt swallowed by the air.

I ran back to where the circle had been. I searched everywhere, touching the air, walking in circles, breathing fast, but there was nothing. It was like the portal had never existed.

The silence hit next.

It was too quiet.

Not normal quiet. Not peaceful quiet. It was heavy and strange, like the world was holding its breath.

I forced myself to look around.

And that was when I realized this place was not normal at all.

The air felt different. It was cool but not cold. The light was soft even though I could not see the sun. The sky above was not blue. It was pale silver, and it moved slowly like clouds were flowing in strange patterns.

The ground beneath my feet looked like normal earth at first, but when I looked closer, I saw tiny glowing lines running through it, like veins of light.

"What the hell..." I whispered.

I turned slowly, trying to take everything in.

There were trees, but they were not normal either. Their bark was dark and smooth, and their leaves were silver. The leaves made no sound even when the wind moved them. It was like sound did not exist here.

"Okay," I said to myself, trying to calm down. "Okay, Riley, don’t panic. You knew this would be weird."

But this was beyond weird.

This felt wrong.

I started walking because standing still felt worse. Every step felt loud in my own ears even though I could not hear my footsteps.

As I walked deeper, the whole place seed to stretch endlessly. The path ahead of looked the sa no matter how far I went.

Then I saw sothing.

I froze.

Soone was standing between the trees.

A woman.

She was dressed in old clothes that looked torn and dirty. Her hair was long and tangled. She looked pale, almost grey.

"Hello?" I called.

She did not respond.

I walked closer, my heart pounding. "Are you okay?"

She did not move.

Then she suddenly started walking.

Not toward .

Past .

She walked right by my side.

And she did not even look at .

I turned quickly. "Hey! I’m talking to you!"

Nothing.

She kept walking like I did not exist.

Fear crept up my spine.

"Can you see ?" I asked louder.

Still nothing.

And just then she disappeared into the trees.

My chest felt tight.

"Okay," I muttered, holding my chest now. "That was creepy."

I started walking again, but now my senses were sharper. I felt like sothing was watching .

Then I saw more.

A man this ti.

He was running, breathing hard, looking terrified. His clothes were ripped, and his body was covered in blood.

"Wait!" I called.

He ran straight toward .

I stepped aside, but he passed through .

Through !

I gasped loudly and stumbled back.

"What the bloody hell!"

I turned to watch him. He kept running, screaming, looking behind him like sothing was chasing him.

But I could not see anything.

Then suddenly he fell.

His body hit the ground, and he stopped moving.

I stood there frozen.

A few seconds later, his body faded.

It literally faded like smoke.

"No, no, no," I whispered, shaking my head.

"This is not real. This cannot be real."

But deep inside, I knew this was real.

These were people.

Candidates.

People who ca here before .

People who did not survive.

My stomach twisted painfully.

I kept walking, but now every shadow made nervous. Every movent in the distance made my heart jump.

Sotis I saw people walking calmly like nothing was wrong. Sotis they were crying. Sotis they were screaming.

None of them could see .

It was like I was in a different layer of reality.

"Are these mories?" I whispered to myself.

No one answered.

Ti felt strange here. I did not know how long I had been walking.

Then I heard sothing. A low sound. A growl.

My entire body went still and I turned slowly.

Nothing.

But the sound ca again.

Closer.

My heart started pounding hard.

"Hello?" I said weakly.

Silence.

I took one step forward. Then another.

The entire place suddenly felt darker.

The glowing lines in the ground pulsed faster.

I swallowed hard.

"Okay," I said. "You knew this would happen. You knew there were wolves Riley."

I forced myself to keep moving.

One step.

Two steps.

Three.

Then I stopped. Because I felt it.

I was not alone anymore.

I turned my head slowly.

And my breath caught in my throat.

Wolves.

They were everywhere.

They stood between the trees, their bodies large and powerful, their eyes glowing in the dim light. So were black. So were silver. So looked scarred and terrifying.

They were silent. Watching .

More stepped out from the shadows.

My chest rose and fell rapidly. I looked around.

They had surrounded .

Every direction. Every path.

There was no escape.

I took one shaky step backward, preparing for a run.

But every single wolf moved closer at the sa ti.

I froze.

My heart slamd against my ribs.

This was it.

This was really happening. Riley Grayson, you’re done for!
