759: Chapter 752: Substandard Medical Supplies 759: Chapter 752: Substandard Medical Supplies Sepsis?

Everyone was so shocked by this terrifying term that their eyes nearly bulged, except for Gui, the young rade.

Because he didn’t know what sepsis was.

“Doctor, could there be a mistake?

He’s normally very healthy; how could he suddenly develop sepsis for no reason?” Sisi asked, swallowing with difficulty, her throat dry.

The old doctor wasn’t angry at Sisi’s doubt and spoke amiably, “Based on my many years of experience, sepsis is certainly the diagnosis.

If you’re not reassured, we can draw some blood for a culture, and the results will be available in a week.”

“Getting sepsis isn’t related to age; it generally happens after an infection.

You shouldn’t be too worried.

The infection time wasn’t long, and the condition isn’t very severe yet.

With medication, there’s a good chance of recovery,” the old doctor reassured them.

Infection?

Yan Jin spent all his time on the mountain, which was cleaner than spring water.

How could he have a chance to get infected with the sepsis virus?

Sisi voiced her question, and the old doctor found it odd too; it seemed really strange!

“Have you been to any special places or eaten or used anything unusual in the past few months?” the old doctor asked.

Yan Jin shook his head, but Zhang Jie exclaimed, “Didn’t you hit your head three months ago and went to the rural health clinic?

Could it be that the clinic wasn’t clean, causing the infection?”

Zhang Jie was merely speaking offhand, but a thought struck Sisi.

That clinic even issued expired medicines; it would be normal if their medical instruments weren’t clean.

Plus, she had heard that improper medication could also lead to blood disorders.

The old doctor didn’t definitively say the infection was from the clinic, but from his tone, it was clear he also suspected that Yan Jin might have likely contracted it due to insufficient disinfection at the rural health clinic.

Yan Jin himself didn’t seem to have much reaction, only initially startled by the doctor’s diagnosis, and thereafter smiling slightly, as if the doctor had merely mentioned a minor cold.

Hospital admission was processed quickly.

Zhang Jie stayed to care for Yan Jin in the hospital, while Sisi went with Shangguan and Gui to the rural health clinic to see what the situation was.

The rural health clinic was just a single low, earthen building and a small yard, with five or six doctors doubling as nurses.

The clinic was truly quite rudimentary, lacking many medical instruments, but the main issue was the professional petence of these doctors, which was not trustworthy.

Two middle-aged women sat in a room eating sunflower seeds, spitting the shells everywhere, their chatting loud enough to be heard from afar.

Meanwhile, three men played cards, with white strips stuck on their faces, shouting loudly from time to time.

The white coats on these five people had long turned gray, making one wonder whether there was a thriving bacterial kingdom on them.

The only person who seemed like a doctor was a man in his fifties with a kind appearance, wearing a clean white coat with several patches; his desk was piled with medical books, and he was reading a book intently.

“What are you here for?” a woman asked, unhappy.

“To see a doctor,” Gui replied in the local dialect.

“Old Niu, patient,” the woman yelled towards the man sitting beside her, then went back to spitting sunflower seeds and chatting.

Sisi frowned at the floor covered in sunflower seeds like snow; this thick layer couldn’t be eaten in less than an hour or two.

Doctor Niu smiled amiably at Gui and asked him many questions.

Gui rambled on, saying he had an upset stomach and had diarrhea five or six times since morning.

Doctor Niu wrote a prescription and said to a woman, “Fetch the medicine.”

Another woman who was eating sunflower seeds stood up impatiently, took the prescription, went to the pharmacy, and retrieved two bottles of medicine, taking a few pills from each and putting them in a small white paper bag.

She didn’t bother writing anything down and simply said ‘One pill each time, three times a day,’ before quickly returning to eat sunflower seeds.

Taking advantage that she wasn’t watching, Sisi and Shangguan slipped into the pharmacy to take photos.

The shelves were lined with various medicines, but whatever she randomly picked up turned out to be expired, and very few on the shelf were up to standards.

She took several close-up shots, especially focused on these medicine’s production dates, and also captured the scenes of doctors eating sunflower seeds and playing cards.

Gui whispered to Sisi, “These people all have connections; they can’t even treat a cold properly.

Only Doctor Niu has real skills; everyone goes to him when they’re sick and not the others.”

Doctor Niu, seated nearest to the door, looked up and saw Shangguan with the camera, his heart skipped a beat.

He furtively glanced at his coworkers and, seeing they hadn’t noticed, let out a sigh of relief and slightly smiled.

After everything was captured, Sisi pretended to be dissatisfied and said, “Doctor, why are you giving us expired medicine?

What if it kills someone?”

The woman, who was interrupted, exploded in anger, standing up with a loud bang, glaring, and shouting, “What’s wrong with it being expired?

We only have expired medicines here; if others can eat them, why can’t you?

Do you think you’re more precious?”

The others chimed in backing the woman, accusing Sisi of being overly picky; one male doctor even said that medicine didn’t really have an expiration date.

All these words were recorded by Shangguan.

This group finally realized what was happening when they saw the dark camera on Shangguan’s shoulder.

Alarmed, they hurriedly stored away the playing cards and sunflower seeds from the table into drawers.

“Who are you?

Why are you filming us?”

“Journalists, here to investigate the harm your clinic causes,” Sisi said coldly, pulling out her journalist ID, which immediately intimidated the group, extinguishing their arrogance.

Sisi, satisfied, put away her ID, instructing the woman to clean up the mess on the ground; there was hardly any space left to stand.

With the journalist guise, the subsequent work went smoothly.

Everyone cooperated in providing information, especially Doctor Niu, who voluntarily led them to photograph the substandard medical equipment.

“I suspect these injections are expired too, and these instruments don’t seem quite right.

I can only try to use them less, or disinfect more with alcohol.

But I’m still worried about insufficient disinfection.

Sigh, you don’t know, my heart hasn’t been at ease for years, always fearing that I’ll cause a death,” Doctor Niu lamented.

Wearing gloves, Sisi took samples of each of the unqualified medical supplies mentioned by Doctor Niu, carefully wrapping them in a thick plastic bag to send to the provincial capital for testing.

Through Doctor Niu, they learned that these medical supplies were provided by the Baihe Foundation, in three batches so far.

“Of course, not every batch was like this; there were good items too, but not many, and they were used up quickly, leaving only these.

Since we have these, the higher-ups rarely provide us with medical supplies, saying they don’t want anything wasted,” Doctor Niu sighed and shook his head.

The findings from Doctor Niu were substantial; they obtained evidence of expired medical supplies being dispensed by the Baihe Foundation.

More importantly, they captured testimonies from Doctor Niu and several other doctors on camera.
