The textbooks were handed out that morning. There were only two—Language Arts and Math—along with two workbooks. Tang Xiaonan finally got to see so old-school textbooks. The covers had a very vintage feel, featuring a boy and a girl in red scarves, studying amidst a sea of flowers.

"Alright, class, I’m going to take roll call now. When I call your na, please stand up and say ’Here.’ Understood?"

Standing at the lectern, Phoenix Golding smiled brightly, occasionally shooting Tang Xiaonan a puzzling glance. A normal child would never have detected Phoenix Golding’s scrutiny, but Tang Xiaonan was anything but normal. She had noticed the mont Phoenix Golding started sizing her up, and her dislike for the woman grew.

She hated anyone who secretly spied on her. That even included boys who had a crush on her. She had no patience for boys who only dared to watch from a distance without the courage to confess their feelings.

Besides, the look Phoenix Golding gave her was far from friendly. ’What on earth does this woman want?’

"Tang Xiaonan," Phoenix Golding’s voice called from the lectern.

"Here."

Tang Xiaonan stood up, answering in a soft, sweet voice as she looked directly at Phoenix Golding.

’So you want to sneak glances at ? Fine, I’ll stare right back at you out in the open. Hmph!’

Faced with Tang Xiaonan’s wide, dark, unblinking eyes, Phoenix Golding felt inexplicably unnerved. But she quickly told herself she was overthinking things. ’She’s just a silly little girl. What could she possibly know?’

"Sit down."

Phoenix Golding smiled and continued with the roll call. There were quite a few students in the class—forty-two in all. This elentary school drew its student body from four villages: Millstone Peak, Xavier Village, Rosillia Village, and Aeridor Village. Each grade had a single class, but class sizes dwindled in the upper grades, as many students dropped out to go ho and work.

After the roll call, Phoenix Golding began assigning seats. As the youngest and shortest student, Tang Xiaonan was placed in the front row as the deskmate of Phoenix Golding’s son, Ulysses Spann. They were in the first desk of the center row, right next to the teacher’s platform. Amanda Chapman, being taller, was sent to sit in the back.

Not a single lesson was taught that morning. After arranging the seats, Phoenix Golding told the students to read by themselves and then disappeared. She was gone for ages. Tang Xiaonan’s opinion of her sank even lower. ’Completely irresponsible. She’s a terrible role model for a teacher.’

Furthermore, Tang Xiaonan was deeply unsatisfied with her new deskmate. Ulysses Spann was a year older than her and resembled Phoenix Golding, with full lips and a fair complexion. But no matter how she looked at him, he was just unlikable. The problem was his eyes.

The boy’s eyes were set too close together, making his eyebrows and eyes look cramped. He also had a narrow forehead and a pointed chin, which gave his entire face a petty and stingy appearance. Tang Xiaonan firmly believed that people with close-set eyes were bound to be narrow-minded. Ulysses Spann wasn’t just unpleasant to look at; his personality was even more irritating.

The boy acted as if he had ADHD, unable to sit still for a mont. Before long, his arm crept over, taking up more than half of Tang Xiaonan’s side of the desk. He would move it back a little when she said sothing, but it would inevitably slide back over. Unwilling to bicker with a child, Tang Xiaonan just scooted her chair closer to the aisle.

What she didn’t realize, however, was that Ulysses Spann interpreted her actions as a sign of fear. He was the teacher’s son, so of course Tang Xiaonan had to suck up to him. If she didn’t, he would just have his mom punish her.

In this classroom, his mother was the one with all the power, which ant everyone had to listen to him. For soone so young, Ulysses Spann had given it a lot of thought. He considered himself a real big shot and was already starting to hatch another sche.
