Early the next morning, Aston Marsh ca knocking. "Hurry up. I’m taking you to see the Madman."

"So early?" Goldie Thorne hadn’t had enough sleep. The sky outside was just starting to get light.

"The Madman goes to a ti-honored restaurant for morning tea every day. He’s there from seven to nine, then he goes ho. If you want to find him, you have to go early, or you’ll miss him," Aston Marsh explained.

"Why not just go to his house?" Goldie Thorne found it strange. ’Why do we have to find him at a restaurant?’

Aston Marsh said irritably, "If I knew where the Madman lived, would I have to get up this early? Hurry up. If we’re late, we won’t catch him."

Goldie Thorne was still dawdling in bed, so Nancy Thorne kicked him in a fit of rage. She couldn’t stand lazy people. Goldie was quick-witted and silver-tongued, but he was just too lazy. It was an infuriating flaw.

"Ouch..."

Caught completely off guard, Goldie Thorne rolled off the bed, all sleepiness gone. He glared at Nancy Thorne, but before he could scold her, she put her hands on her hips and yelled, "I’ll tell Dad when we get back, and he’ll skin you alive!"

"I’m up, I’m up, you little taskmaster! I knew I shouldn’t have brought you!"

Goldie Thorne limped off to wash up. ’Good thing my back is still young and strong,’ he thought, ’or that kick from my niece would have broken it.’ Nancy Thorne made a face at his back while Aston Marsh watched with a chuckle, feeling even more envious. ’I’ll have to go ho and get to work with my wife on making a baby. I want a daughter. I heard the family planning policy is starting next year, so I’d better hurry.’

After they washed up, Aston Marsh led them to find the Madman. As they passed a post and telecommunications office, Goldie Thorne slapped his forehead. "Later, I should call your Second Uncle and let the family know we’re okay."

Nancy Thorne and Jim Thorne both lowered their heads, their hearts pounding. ’If he makes that call, we’re busted.’ Adrian Hawthorne saw their reaction and beca even more certain that the two of them had snuck away from ho. Only an idiot like Goldie Thorne was still in the dark.

After walking for about half an hour, they finally arrived at the morning tea house. It was bustling with people coming and going, most of them elderly folks enjoying a rare mont of leisure, eating and chatting.

"The Madman has his regular seat. Look, that’s him by the window. When you talk to him, whatever you do, don’t look him in the eye. The Madman hates it when people look at his eyes," Aston Marsh warned.

"Is there sothing wrong with his eyes?" Goldie Thorne asked curiously.

"Who knows? No one’s ever gotten a close look. I guess there must be sothing wrong with them." Aston Marsh wasn’t sure either. It was all just hearsay, and he had never formally dealt with the Madman himself.

Aston Marsh found a table near the Madman. Soone ca by pushing a cart, and he took so food. "Go on, eat. The dim sum here is delicious."

The carefree Jim Thorne grabbed a char siu bao and started eating. He finished it in two bites, his mouth like a bottomless pit, drawing the attention of quite a few people. Even the Madman glanced their way with a faint smile on his lips.

Nancy Thorne secretly sized up this big shot. He looked to be in his early forties, full of vigor, with a long, slanted scar running from the corner of his right eye all the way to his ear, giving him a ferocious appearance. She deliberately tried to observe the Madman’s eyes, her curiosity getting the better of her.

But the mont her gaze t the Madman’s, he seed to sense it and looked over at her. His chilling glare was like a knife, sharp enough to pierce right through a person. Nancy Thorne quickly lowered her head and pretended to eat. After a little while, she couldn’t resist any longer. ’This old guy probably isn’t staring at anymore,’ she thought, and raised her head again. But the instant she peeked, her eyes t the Madman’s amused, enigmatic gaze.

Nancy Thorne’s face flushed with embarrassnt. She ducked her head like a thief caught in the act and frantically started eating, not even looking at what she was grabbing before stuffing it into her mouth. She chewed for a good while before realizing the texture was wrong.

"Nancy, why are you chewing on a cloth?" Jim Thorne exclaid in astonishnt. It was even his used napkin. ’My sister has the weirdest hobbies.’
