Phoebe Huxley paused, a thoughtful look on her face. ’Getting a dog really is necessary. I’ll get an even fiercer one to kill that vicious dog next door!’

"Hmph!"

Phoebe Huxley forced a sound out through her nose. Though it was just a grunt of acknowledgnt, it still counted as a response. The others were secretly surprised; it seed the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law had really made up!

Raina finished washing her clothes first and headed ho carrying the wooden basin. Tang Xiaonan followed close behind her. A trace of kindness appeared on Raina’s face. In truth, she, like Phoebe Huxley, had a fierce look with fleshy cheeks. However, Raina was more tactful in her dealings with people than Phoebe Huxley was.

"Mama, I’m going to Grandma’s house."

Tang Xiaonan told Phoebe Huxley, who nodded. Phoebe felt it was strange, too. ’Why has our daughter suddenly gotten so close to her grandmother? She thought of her when there was at to eat, and now she’s sticking to her side.’

Raina’s face grew even kinder. She carried the wooden basin with one arm and held Tang Xiaonan’s hand with the other. She was actually very fond of her little granddaughter. It was just that her granddaughter never wanted to play with her before, and she had assud Phoebe Huxley incited it. This was one of the reasons for her falling out with her eldest son’s wife.

Now that Tang Xiaonan was willing to cling to her, Raina was naturally pleased. She assud Phoebe Huxley had instructed her granddaughter to do so, and her resentnt toward Phoebe lessened sowhat.

"Grandma has cookies."

Raina rembered a pack of cookies she had stashed away at the bottom of her chest and planned to take them out for her granddaughter. Tang Xiaonan, however, was preoccupied. She wasn’t interested in cookies; she wanted to find a newspaper.

"Third Grandma, Xiaonan."

A soft, gentle voice carried over from a distance. It belonged to a tall, slender, and graceful girl of about ten. Two pigtails hung down in front, and she wore a peach-pink cotton jacket that had faded from washing and was covered with several patches.

But the girl was exceptionally clean from head to toe. Her hair was neat, her features delicate, and her skin fair. One look was enough to tell she was different from the other village girls.

Tang Xiaonan knew who she was. This was Jacqueline Spann, the protagonist from the book who ca with her own halo. She was ten years old this year. The author had praised her to the heavens, using every beautiful word imaginable to describe her.

Gentle and kind, beautiful and poised, successful in her career, blessed with a happy family...

All good things were concentrated in Jacqueline Spann. Everyone, young and old, male and female, loved her. Even Adrian Hawthorne had an excellent impression of Jacqueline. Although he and Jacqueline’s husband—the book’s male lead, Clayton Xavier—were mortal enemies, Adrian was still very good to her.

In short, Jacqueline Spann was a "little fairy" so perfect that even other won couldn’t bring themselves to be jealous of her.

However, the current Jacqueline Spann wasn’t in a very good situation. Her father, Vernon Spann, was a "stranded" educated youth. Because of his bad class background, he had remained behind while the other educated youths gradually returned to the cities. He did the hardest, most tiring work but received the smallest share of grain.

To survive, Vernon Spann married a village girl, Phoenix Golding. Their lives improved slightly, but they still didn’t have enough to eat or warm clothes to wear. Furthermore, Phoenix Golding favored sons over daughters and wasn’t good to her eldest daughter, Jacqueline Spann. Vernon Spann, however, adored his daughter, but he had no say in the family.

But Phoenix Golding was extrely tactful in her dealings with people and was very popular in the village. No one ever accused her of favoring sons over daughters; whenever she was ntioned, it was always with praise.

Jacqueline Spann was holding a large basin of clothes, ready to go wash them by the river. Her hands were covered in chilblains, which sowhat detracted from her aura. Jacqueline was perfect in every way, but her hands were her only flaw.

From so much manual labor, her knuckles were thick, and her hands were covered in calluses and scars from chilblains. Even later, when her living conditions improved, Jacqueline’s hands never beca beautiful. But this only made the male lead, Clayton Xavier, cherish her all the more.
